STAND
A)
OBJECTIVE
The
dog is to stand in a smart and alert manner on command, with
its right shoulder close and parallel to the handler’s
left knee or hip
Very
useful to prevent the dog from sitting at inopportune
moments.
The
best position for a quick easy grooming session. Essential
for a steady and unproblematic vet’s examination. A
requirement for shows and obedience Trials.
B)
COMMAND : STAND
C)
EXERCISE
This
exercise should be taught as an integral part of Heel on
lead exercise whilst the handler and dog are walking
forward.
On
the order, STAND YOUR DOGS, the handler has to do 3 things
simultaneously’ stop walking, give the command STAND in a
drawn out reassuring tone of voice and place the right hand
on the dog’s chest to prevent further forward movement.
The dog should remain in a comfortable position.
If
the dog continually sits or drops, the handler should
immediately move forward and repeat the procedure, this time
placing the left hand onto the inside of the dog’s right
thigh as well as the right hand on the chest. It should not
be necessary to keep the left hand on the thigh for long.
NOTE:
The
practice of reaching over the dog’s back to the outside
rear leg should be discouraged, as this
