DOWN
A)
OBJECTIVE
The dog is
to go into down position promptly in a smart and alert
manner on command, with its right shoulder close and
parallel to the handler’s left knee or hip.
B)
COMMAND : DOWN
C)
EXERCISE
This
exercise is taught with the dog in the SIT position.
Method A:
On
the order, DOWN YOUR DOG, the handler indicates where the
drop position is by patting the ground in front of the dog.
The command DOWN is given simultaneously.
A
small tidbit in the hand is recommended as a reward for the
dog on completion of the exercise.
Method B:
Show
the dog the inducement, food or toy, say DOWN and bring the
incentive down and forward at an angle, like a rounded L.
His nose will follow. Assist him by applying gentle pressure
as your right hand releases the inducement. Verbally praise.
Method C:
The
handler gives the command DOWN in a sharp authoritative
voice, at the time bending or crouching down beside the dog,
exchanging the lead from the right hand to the left hand but
still holding it close to the slip chain dog’s shoulders.
The right hand moves behind the front legs lifting them
forward and upwards in a sweeping motion, at downwards on
the shoulders. Praise the dog.
NOTE:
The handler should maintain a crouched position until
the dog is settled in the down position. This exercise is on
of compulsion. Speed and smoothness are essential to achieve
a quick response.
