HEEL
A)
OBJECTIVE
The
dog and handler as a team to walk smartly forward, The dog
is to keep close to the handler’s left hip or knee
throughout, while doing the right, left and about turns.
Walking
at heel is considered basic good manners for a dog. It
demonstrates control and leads to a happy dog-owner
relationship.
Heeling
is required in the obedience ring and comes in handy for
the show dog.

COMMAND : HEEL
C)
EXERCISE
-
Say
HEEL, flick the lead as you step off which your left
foot, praise dog, move briskly, keep lead loose.

If
dog lags, flick lead, pat right thigh, praise verbally
when dog is in position

The
moment the dog heel wide, snap the lead, say HEEL and
GOOD Dog once he is in position. Then fondle with
right hand under jaws

Do
not pull dog towards you if he is out of position.
Snap or flick the lead, then praise.

RIGHT TURN
On
the order, RIGHT TURN, the handler makes a sharp 90 degree
turn to the right, at the same time considering that the
dog must be encouraged to move quickly in the correct
heeling position, by handler bending down while placing
flat left hand on the dog’s left shoulder and guiding
whilst encouraging by voice, and be praised for having
done so.
E)
LEFT TURN
On the
order, LEFT TURN, the handler makes a sharp 90 degree turn
to the left, pivoting on the left foot and sweeping the
right leg across the front of the dog. To prevent the dog
from bumping into the legs of the handler, warm him of the
coming turn by voice or lead. When perfected, the legs of
the handler should never come in contact with the dog.
F)
ABOUT TURN
On
the order, ABOUT TURN, the handle makes a complete
180-degree about turn to the right, walking back over the
same path. The handler’s speed in turning must enable
the dog to move quickly into the correct heeling position.
The dog should be trained to move quickly with the handler
as per description.
