SIT-STAY
A) OBJECTIVE
On command to SIT STAY, the dog shall remain in that position until handler returns and gives the release command.
Useful to keep the dog safe and inactive for a moment. Use it to keep the dog waiting at the gate, or a shop door, generally helps to keep the dog under control. An obedience Trial requirement.
B) COMMAND : STAY
C) EXERCISE
-
On the order, LEAVE YOUR DOG, The handler gives the command STAY in a drawn out reassuring tone of voice, at the same moment moving the flat right/left hand towards the front of the dog’s face, ensuring not to touch the dog, and stepping forward with the right foot before turning to face the dog.
NOTE
It is important that all 3 actions are carried out as one.
-
The handler now stands facing directly in front of the dog without any body contact. It is important to ensure that the lead is held above the dog’s neck the whole time.
On the order, RETURN TO YOUR DOG, the handler reverses the above procedure by taking one step back to the original heel position.
-
On a further order, EXERCISE FINISHED, the handler praises the dog.
-
After the dog understands the command STAY (not before), the handler may move further from the dog, one step at a time, always maintaining a loose lead.
STAND –STAY
After the dog understands the command STAND (not before), the Stand-Stay can be introduced.
To be taught in the same manner as in the SIT-STAY except that the dog is to be placed in a STAND position.
DOWN-STAY
To be taught in the same manner as in the SIT-STAY and the STAND-STAY.
Place the dog in the Down position before commencing the DOWN-STAY EXERCISE.
