CHASING WHEELS Can't Post

I HAVE A 2 1/2 YR OLD SHELTIE THAT HATES WHEELS. HE GOES AFTER MOTORCYCLES, CARS, BIKES, WHEELS CHAIRS, BABY CARRIAGES, WALKERS, SKATEBOARDS.... ANYTHING WITH WHEELS. IT'S REALLY EMBARRASSING AND GETTING WORSE BY THE DAY. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Re: [CARSALES] CHASING WHEELS [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi again ...

Am assuming that your dog is not let free to run the parks or streets ... and as such, the best way to train a dog not to chase wheels or cars ... etc is to train the dog to "heel" ...

Again it bears saying ... you are trying to train a shelter dog ... and the first step towards good training has nothing to do with training itself ... The first requirement is to build trust ... and show love ... Allow your dog to settle in comfortably before making to many demands ...

Then start with basic training ... sit, stay & heel ... and teach your dog the importance of obeying your commands ... By properly grounding the "heel" command you will also be teaching your dog not to stay by your side and not chase wheels ... prams ... etc etc ...

After teaching "heel' ... you can then move on to more demanding commands such as "come" ...

Again ... suggest praise & reward methods as opposed to reprimand & punishment methods ... shelter dogs generally respond much better to praise & reward ...

Will strongly suggest you get a good basic tranining manual ... to teach you how to teach the dog.

The wonder about carrying out good, reasonable and fun training is that the process also helps bond owner to dog like nothing else ...

Cheers Smile

Your dog is high in Prey

This simply is the desire of a dog to chase something and bite it. Not because he hates wheels because his eyesight key s on motion. Be it what you mention, it can be dangerous. Its a natural drive for dogs to have.

Solutions for Aggressive Dog Behaviour-Prey:

Since this dog behaviour is the act of running away from you to chase whatever it decides, you need to focus your dog training towards the "leave it" and "come" commands. "Leave it" training teaches your dog that he is not allowed to show interest in whatever you, his handler, decides. Birds, cats and rabbits would be a few examples in addition to people, wheels etc, as mentioned above.

Teaching your dog to "come" or recall, gives you the ability to call your dog back to you when he starts to chase something. A dog will have to be really, really solid at this command, especially if he has already started to pursue something or someone when you are trying to recall him.

How long you must work on these will be depend on how high your dogs drive is. It may take some time and patience but if it is a child your dog decides to bolt on, it is well worth the extra work.
