Pet industry seems to be booming....but hopefully this doesn't open up more opportunities for the brainless, heartless ppl managing puppy mills!
-------------------------------------------------------- I noticed that there are 2 new petshops at the 'famous' Jln Petaling in KL. One of them is a branch of Summer Pet and the other a new one....both shop well renovated. Boom for the puppy millers

Good for you to ask those questions!!! You are off to a good start to give a little companion a loving home.
Rule 1 never buy from a pet shop.
Rule 2 do research and figure out the dog that is best suited to your needs. Not from "my friend said" but from published books that tell you what to look for in a breed. If you want a pure bred then read the Breed Standard published by the FCI or try getting it from the. Go to dog shows to meet breeders who show. Look at the dogs of your chosen breed and chat with the owners/breeders after they have gone in the ring and when they are more relaxed. In my opinion a good breeder will be open to having you come to their home and see/meet the parents of the puppy. Maybe they only own the dam but that's not uncommon.
Rule 3 Do more research. What to expect from a puppy. How much attention they need. What about training? Where will you keep them, inside or out.
Rule 4 Do more research to know what shots the dog should have and to study the paperwork so you know what you are getting is the real thing, this is if you are buying a pedigreed breed.
Although it is not easy to find a good breeder here in Malaysia (not because there aren't any but because they don't have the avenue to get your attention or the proper support of the) you should search until you do. Again the dog shows are a way to find someone who is serious about the breed.
Read, read, read books about dogs before you get one. Understand that they are a little like having a child since they need food, attention, medical care and proper shelter for a very long time.
This is only a small part of what to look for BEFORE getting a puppy.
Remember you can always adopt one from the SPCA since they kill 1000 or more dogs every month simply because there is not enough space to keep them all. People do relinquish pedigreed dogs to them. But again before getting any dog do your research because hopefully once you get one and give your heart to it then it will be with you for about 10 to 15 years!!!
