First of all, you need to have crate-training for the JRT. Start them when they are puppies and even they bark, don't give way. Don't let them dominate you. You have to have strong heart not to let them loose so easily. Actually, I brought up my 2 JRT as guard dogs and since they are small, it is easier to take care of them compared to big dogs. I will cage the JRT separately in the crate at night behind our door grille. Whenever they see stranger stopping in front of our gate, they will bark vigorously. This way, it is not so easy to throw food inside to poison the dogs. Now they are so used to their crate and when we go out, we will cage them and they will not soil or urinate in the crate. They are very intelligent and they will hunt down anything that moves even ants . And when you really spend time to talk and counsel them, they will listen. At times, I still need to beat the dogs to deter them from destroying things especially the newspaper. I feel that if you want them to behave like the toy dogs, I don't think it is possbile. Basically, they are hunting dogs and have hunting instinct. What I like my 2 JRT is that they are very fun to be with and they like to follow you wherever you go. One of my JRTs can really jump and he can jump up as high as my chest. And he can retrieve tennis balls too. My female can perform a roll-over trick. When we bring them to open field, they really like it and can run very fast and no way I can outrun them.
