Re: [xyne] Dominant Dog [In reply to] Can't Post

You posted: " ... if i can get him to calm down during gatherings... ya think it'll help?? ..."

You can try, but I doubt it will work ... My concern is that, if you try the above (before your dog is properly trained or sufficiently re-conditioned) ... all you are going to teach your dog is that he can ignore you ... and that is a bad habit for your dog to acquire ...

Check the earlier postings ... for effective training and/or reconditioning ... it is best done BEFORE taking your dog to a doggie gathering ... Once you have properly ground what you need to teach your dog - then you can take him to crowded places to REINFORCE what has been trained ...

Our dogs play all sorts of games with us ... retreiving ... hide & seek ... chase & catch ... find the ball/bone etc

Cheers Smile

hide and seek??? hehehe.. how do u play tat with the dogs??? u mean hide with a toy or something?? how do u get them to retrieve??

ooh.. the reason i ask how your big dogs play is cos tyson's play is usually jumping (which i dont think is good...) when he gets excited..unless it is like fetch games... tats why i dont know if its because of tat he appears aggressive when with other dogs...

shall try to reinforce tyson's OB again and correct his habits.. just hope i can find other dogs to practice.. hehee

Re: [xyne] Dominant Dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Hide & Seek can be with toy or people ... depends on their mood and ours ... Smile

As for Tyson jumping when playing ... training basic commands of sit, down & stay will help immensely ...

About other dogs interpreting Tyson's jumping as being aggressive ... I don't think so, I suspect it's other dog signals & communication (or lack thereof), that is making other dogs apprehensive of Tyson ...

Think you need to get a good training book/manual and read ... Smile ... The better we understand the principles of training, the better we train.

Cheers Smile

Hello,

Long time no reply..........BlushBlushBlushBlushBlush

As for Hazel, she's doing a *tad* bit better...but still in no condition to go to any gatherings. If there are any large dogs which pass by now, she'll just be on alert and staring..pullling a little, trying to smell the other dog.

The downside, she's still as aggressive as ever when she's at home, barking at other dogs and it has rub off on Tyson...and *sigh* Tyson at this age (15mths) is already trying to be dominant among other dogs and he definitely doesn't need Hazel's influence Pirate ack.

Hi you ... long time no see ...

Well ... from your last posting ... how Hazel is reacting now is certainly an improvement ... Smile ... am sure you are making progress ...

Sounds like the situation in the house also needs some work ... But Tyson is growing up and feeling his oats ... probably settle down after a while ...

Cheers Smile

Hello,

Hmm..is there anything more that I can do for Tyson? Because I would like to bring him out more often without me being too worried if he would start a fight.Unsure

Usually he would raise his hackles but still wag his tail at a nearby large sized male. But if its a smaller dog...that's a totally different story. He'd just want to play. Smile

Re: [RealityDreamer] Dominant Dog [In reply to] Can't Post

I think given how you describe Tyson ... more socialisation is required ... If Tyson is still friendly with smaller dogs, then start and concentrate on smaller dogs first ... and let Tyson play to his heart's content ... but carry out intensive socialisation and get Tyson used to other dogs ... of all kinds, shape and size ...

Otherwise you might get yourself caught in a Catch-22 situation - when the way to improve Tyson's demeanour is to take Tyson out for socialisation, but you cannot - because he is insufficiently socialised ...!!!

Cheers Smile

Re: [stanleyee] Dominant Dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi stanley,

My first thought is that the fight was that the fight traumatised your dog very badly & he hasn't recovered from it thus being aggressive with everything.

I think "socialisation" would hv to start at home first with ur family. Since ur cocker still trusts ur sisters (is he fearful of her but hasnt bitten her? or is he the same & playful with her?)If he is fearful of her,u need her to gain his trust and then slowly introduce every1 else..just as u would outside. If not, u can get him to be with ur sister(create a positive environment..like when she's playing with him)..n then u nearby..within his comfort zone. Then slowly get closer & closer.

Another reason could be cocker spaniel rage. Google tht...

All the best.

Hi all,Smile

Need some advice here.

Well, Hazel's real dominant and gets aggressive towards dogs who don't "bow down".

Today she met a GR...she didn't snap or anything.. yay~ Smile guess the GR was ok with her being dominant.

Anyway, any ideas on how to tone down the dominance? besides socializing her? or is that even a good idea?Crazy

RealityDreamer

I do handle a bunch of dogs b4, & from my pass experience i actually realise there will always be a leader as long as there is a group. this seems like their nature instinct. the leader will control the situation. Mad

I felt strange & start my reading. well according to a book a dog who stay at our home treated us as 1 of his/her member as well. thats y they bark when ppl go near our house, she is juz trying to protect us.

Thus, as part of the member, u can choose to be a leader or a follower. A follower means u will juz take care of the dogs, feed the dogs, bath the dogs etc. Crazy

Being a leader mean u r required to train the dog. make it a habit that whenever the dog needs u, ask her to plead u for something. this makes the dogs know u r the true leader. Wink

Never give chance to ur dog if he/she being dominant, u must be fierce & firm & scold him/her loudly NO!!! BAD DOG!!! & stop him. Smile

hope this will help a bit.. Tongue

Yang

Re: [leecy] Dominant Dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Good advise. I would just add-on that the owner of any dog has to bond to the dog prior to any other activity. I my opinion it does not make much sense to do anything when the dog is not related to me or visa versa, I am not related to the dog.

Secondly, I feel that it is of paramount importance that everyone in the family is involved and is doing his/her part. Socialization starts at home.

The dog has to learn that it can rely on my decision and will look at me before he reacts to any new situation. Could you imagine when I am not the alpha to my dog? It is not a toy breed and it would be extremely danger when the dog would start questioning my position or when the dog makes his own decisions without consulting me first.

However, if an owner is not the alpha to his/her dog and the dog does not behave and/or cannot be controlled in public then it will be, at least, an embarrassment and nuisance if not a liability.I never try to be fierce to my dog, but I am firm. I never ever let him get away with disobedience or with any rebellion to my commands.
