Well mari_Lyn,

I am so sorry to read about the suspected way your previous doggy died, but do bear in mind that you have a new doggy now in which you need to love and train... so do let go of the past. I'm sure this new furkid of yours is very lucky to have an owner like you who is so concerned about her.

Hope to see you at the gathering! Smile

Mari_lyn,

Gwinn is right. Nothing can be done on the past except keep the good memory. What matters now is the present and future of what you make it for.

About your question on your mixed breed not barking at strangers. There may be many factors. It could be due to genetics, maturity, socialisation or conditioning. Some breeds are noisier and some are just plain proud and irregardless of the world going by him. It is hard to say without seing your dog. BTW can you give some info of how old is your dog? and what type of mixed breed is he? (may give a good pointer to the reason)

Hello ... Smile

At 6months your doggie is still a baby ... curious about everything even insects ... *Smile ... this is normal ...

And personally, I am glad your doggie likes people ... it is okay & good too (better than having a fierce dog at 6 months) ...

As your doggie grows up, she will learn to distinguish between family members and strangers ... and (I think) she will start barking soon enough ...

The thread for getting dog to go walking & used to leash:

www.puppy.com.my/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=64980;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

And don't worry about your English or about dog breeds - you are doing just fine ... Smile ... I can understand all that you have posted ...

Cheers

Mari_lyn,

If the dog is still a puppy I wouldn't worry about his quietnessTongue Very soon when he starts barking, you will wish that he remains quiet....lolSmile

About the dog refusing th walk on leash it is due to inediquate leash socialisation. I believe I wrote something there also. Just go to that thread and you will see many good advice there.

Hello ...

Yes ... some trainers believe that teaching a doggie "when" to bark ... will indirectly help the owner to control a dog's barking ...

Will suggest that you find a good dog training manual and read ... there are many in the local bookshops ... it is perhaps more important to teach the basic commands to your dog before embarking on bark training.

Have you trained your dog how to sit, stay, down & heel? ...

Once you understand basic techniques for dog training ... then proceed to train dog barking.

Cheers Smile

Re: [mari_Lyn] y my doggy isn't barking to strangers? [In reply to] Can't Post

But if you are really keen on teaching your dog how to "speak" ... you can try this:

First, decide what "command" you want to use for your dog. Possible commands are ..."Speak" ... "Talk" ... "Talk to me" ... "Bark" ... etc.

1st Stage:

Begin by taking advantage of when your dog is barking on its own accord.

When dog barks, say your command, "Speak!" Jump up and down, clap your hands, encourage dog to bark. Keep saying "Speak, Speak!" and if your dog barks ... give enthusiastic praise "Good Speak!" & treat ...

Treat this as a fun game whenever your dog barks on its own. Repeat many times ... and when you think the idea has been received & understood by your dog ...

2nd Stage:

You can attempt to command him to "Speak" at random times during the day.

If dog does not speak after commanding enthusiastically about three times, go back to the first stage of teaching for a few more days and then try again.

Do not scold your dog for not knowing a command, it's your responsibility to teach him, it's not his responsibility to learn.

3rd Stage:

When you're done with playing this new game, say "Enough" or "Enough Speak" ... Praise & treat dog for being quiet.

Eventually, your dog should learn to speak on command, and (even more important) to stop barking on command as well!

Cheers ... Smile

Re: [mari_Lyn] y my doggy isn't barking to strangers? [In reply to] Can't Post

besides the good tips surchinmy gave, you might want to try to teach him to "speak" when he's barking out of a positve thing..like excitement of a walk...or a toy.

That might help Smile

I'm not sure..but based on logic..it should help anyway since it's a positive thing.

Can't compare coz well, my dog, Tyson...didn't bark at strangers till around a week ago...he's 7mths old. Only barked when he was excited coz of a walk/toy/play.Smile

speaking of barking.. last time weeks after i bought hunter, i took him back to the pet shop and asked if my dog is a mute... heheheheh.

i hadn't heard him bark and i thought he couldn't. initially, after that visit - being barked by many dogs in the pet shop, on the same day itself he actually learnt to bark :o

talking about barking..we also almost thought our GR (Hugo) was mute coz he never bark, even if we step over his tail.. then when he was about 7 mths he began to bark a bit..but we thought the bark was very "sissy" .. Unsure

When a lil pup, Harry (Silky) joined the family, he starting barking normally but still quite quiet, he only barks to Harry when they are playing other than he still dont bark much..what do u say???

Re: [nickanna] y my doggy isn't barking to strangers? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

like humans, some people are talkative, some people are quiet... i guess this applies to dogs too :) some dogs are really vocal, they yap yap yap all day until they can't stop. some will only bark when strangers are here, some will bark when they get excited. My dog will bark only when strangers are lurking around my house compound. no matter how hard i try, he wouldn't bark for me :/

perhaps it also takes some time for your dog to bark more often. How old is Hugo now? as dogs mature they gain more confidence, thus i guess it might also contribute to the urge of barking..Mine only started being alert - barking at strangers, at the age of 1 and above. perhaps it's also the breed, and the character of your dog.

if your dog is eating happy, sleeping happy, and even barking, then i guess there's nothing to worry about :) in fact you should be glad he's the quiet type... i'm starting to get annoyed when my dog barks at the firecrackers during deepavali :/

oh, saw Hugo's pic on the photo gallery that day, a beautiful boy :) are u coming to the gathering this sunday? hope to meet u there.

hunter

hehe..deepavali's crackers..must be super noisy =>

thanks for ur advise.. and yes, hugo has a very nice personality..loving and friendly..but sometimes very stubborn.. and when he's out, he's afraid of other big, fierce dog, and he will not wanna walk pass that street..timid ler...

really hoped to meet u ppl at the gathering but we cant make it.. perhaps next time, must meet up with the cheh cheh and ko ko of the club..hahaha !!! Have great fun!!!
