Hi all og beagle lovers,

I'm having no dogs with me now, but i like beagle so much while i saw in the dog show, or petshop or anywhere else. i have bought the book. but what i really gonna ask all these Big brothers and Sisters here is :

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life?
2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently?
3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang".
4 really so hyperactive?
5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL?
6 will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house?
7 any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and untill now?

beacuse i wanna do a homework before have a puppy. i really worry about all this thing. I believe you all because you all have gone through all of this.
I really have to gather all this infomation to clear my doubt.

Thanks very much!!

Hi tkahhean,

Good for u to do research first before U get a beagle. TongueCool I owned a beagle, I can share a little bit info with you...

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life?
a: Beagle is not suitable.

2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently?
a: em, they like to bark, my baby always bark at me when I left her alone, she can bark until loud one. Dun play play!!!

3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang".
a: this i'm not sure, becoz my baby has her "own world", she is not that kind of manja-manja one.

4. really so hyperactive?
a: YUP!! THEY ARE HYPERACTIVE and VERY NAUGHTY!! Frown

5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL?
a: I'm not sure, becoz I brought her to clinic or gathering, I kept her in carrier, she will bark all the way from my house to the destination. Crazy

6. will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house?
a: I think so, should be ok.

7. any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and untill now?
a: not much problem, my baby just like to bite anything since she came to my house, until now she is still the same, very stubborn.

Hope U can get a beagle soon. Laugh

Josephine

Re: [tkahhean] Infomation of Beagle? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello tkahhean,

Good to hear that ur also interested in Beagles !!! Hope my answers will help you to make your decision. hehehe..note that my answers are all based on my experience with my lil one-Nero (5mths old beagle)

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life?

Ans : Right now I'm staying in the apartment and i don't see a problem with that. Hmm...can't say that for the near future though as I will be shifting soon. However, I would personally think that it should be okay as long as you bring your "baby" out for walks and exercise. I don't leave him in his crate that much..only for sleeping at nite hence during the day he can actually roam around in the hse.

2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently?

Ans : Beagle will bark quite loud but Nero doesn't bark much unless it is meal time. Hehehe..i don't think the neighbours know it is coming from my hse as it could be another doggy from another hse barking. Tongue There are a couple of units from my block having doggies too....

3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang".

Ans : Independent...but it is me that will manja with him...ngek ngek ngek....

4 really so hyperactive?

Ans : Not really unless if he is triggered to get all exicited. Eg. playing rough and playing running/chasing. I heard puppies will have this sort of thingy like "puppy crazies". They will get really really excited at times.

5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL?

Ans : He can travel in the car...i leave him to roam around so he wil just walk from one end to the other and also to the front ..but ofcourse i need another person in the car if i'm driving. Likewise with Lilo, he does not bark in the car. I put a leash on him too so that i can control him.

6 will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house?

Ans : I'm yet to find out when I move into my new hse. I think will need to toilet train him again.Unsure

7 any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and untill now?

Ans : For my case i would prefer owning one starting from puppy. So nice to see them grow...It has been the best days of my life since that day i brought Nero back. Oya, I brought him all the way from KL to Penang so that would also answer part of your question 5. Didn't give me any problem...Zzzzzz most of the time on my lap Smile But during the teething period, they bite allot. I think all dogs go thru the same at that age. Beagle are know to be stuborn also.

Re: [tkahhean] Infomation of Beagle? [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear tkahhean ,

I have a 9-month-old Beagle, Snowy. Hope that I can share a little bit of my opinion and glad to add another member into this beagle gang soon !

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life?

=> I'm not sure of this, but they need quiet a lot of space to runabout.

2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently?

=> They dont usually bark, unless they are being left alone or they want something from you. For example, Snowy will just look around when all the dogs nearby are barking but she will bark non-stop when I leave her alone or maybe she wants to come out from her palace.

3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang".

=> Snowy is quiet manja and she will sit by you everytime she have the chance and demand you to pat her.
4 really so hyperactive?

=> Yes, she is very hyperactive esp when she's young. Now she's getting better, as least she can sit still with me for 20 minutes.

5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL?

=> I take Snowy back to my hometown from KL to Ipoh once a month and she is ok with that. She will bark for 10 minutes and just sleep or play with herself for the rest of the journey.

6 will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house?

=> Not sure.

7 any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and untill now?

=> Not much. She is behaving better compared with puppyhood.

Re: [tkahhean] Infomation of Beagle? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmm...I guess everyone has a different answer..but the choice is really up to you and on how much time you have to train your pup..to give you some opinions and experience (not alot tho) about raising a beagle..

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life? --->This I'm not too sure but my pup needs alot of space to run around..everytime i let her out from her pen/cage she gets very hyper..
2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently? --> my lil girl barks alot..can be quite noisy at times hard to make her quiet..eheh
3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang". ---> Josephine's Lilo and Ann's Nero is pretty independent (i think) but my Sara is constantly making noise to get attention and very manja..she is independent but I need to spend alot of time with her esp when i come home after leaving her for quite some time.
4 really so hyperactive? ---> I would say YES...Beagles are VERY hyperactive
5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL? --> this I really don't know..but i guess it would be okay if you have the carrying crate and your beagle is used to riding in the car..
6 will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house? ---> if there is a change in enviroment, I believe that your pup would be able to adapt to the new enviroment but it takes time..you would need to re-housetrain her and all..
7 any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and untill now? ---> well, as far as I'm concerned, my pup has not brought me any real problems that are uncommon in puppies...everything is different with different puppies and some have allergies, some won't. So it's hard to justify that beagles WONT have any problems because all puppies do..one way or another.

Having said all that, there is still the greatest thing of all...you have a playful and loveable furkid living with you 24/7...growing up in your care. I personally dont mind that my pup is noisy and demands attention alot..even if she is having problems or if she's being too naughty..they will often do things that are silly and funny..hehe..after all..beagles will be beagles..I'm sure alot of us beagle owners will say the same thing Tongue So take your time to decide..don't forget to keep us posted Smile

Re: [tkahhean] Infomation of Beagle? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

Glad to know you are doing some research before getting a doggie ... well done ...

We own several breeds including a Beagle ... so maybe can give you a hand here ... with some comparitive answers ... Smile

1. Beagle suitable for apartment life?

Yes and no ... Many people look at a Beagle and say ... aaaah small dog ... and think a Beagle is going to be like a toy breed ... quite the contrary ...

For a small dog ... the Beagle is quite active & needs running space ... Bred as a scent & hunting dog ... the Beagle requires reasonable exercise ... So if you intend to keep a Beagle in an apartment - you must be prepared to give Beagle a good brisk walk (preferably everyday) ... A bored Beagle with too much unspent energy can get up to things you won't believe ... Tongue ... excessive chewing ... excessive barking etc

And without exercise they get fat ...

Exercise a Beagle well - and you have a lovely companion and friend ... small enough to be convenient and strong enough to go jogging with you ...

2. noisy with the barking, or will bark frequently?

Yes ... By breeding & purpose ... Beagles were bred to communicate with other pack members and hunters by barking ... so you can expect most Beagles to be a little noisy ... And they can howl too ... Beagles are hounds after all ...

But again ... socialise and exercise a Beagle well ... and barking will reduce ...

3. indenpendent, eg. no need take every single minutes to "sayang".

Yes ... Again by breeding & purpose - Beagles hunt in packs away from the hunter ... so bred to be independant and to think independantly ... More independant than most toys breeds or gundogs ... They are not the manja manja type of dogs ... or dogs that will do repeated sits and stays for you ... they follow their noses ... and when they catch a good scent ... they are in their own world.

So, not quite the dog if you are interested in obedience ... Mind you, Beagles are not stupid dogs ... just independant of mind and spirit ... They decide when they want to manja - not the owner.

4 really so hyperactive?

So so ... By nature they are more excitable rather than hyper ... JRussells are hyper ... Beagles are excitable ... Quite alert ... they are dogs with a curious nature ... But as said earlier ... they do need resonable exercise or can become hyper ...

5. can travel easily? by car penang to KL?

This is more the individual dog rather than a breed characteristic ... acclimatise your dog early enough and most dogs will love car rides ... even long ones ... just give them reasonable bathroom breaks and time to stretch legs ... our dogs love car rides ...

6 will adapt to new enviroment if i always change place or i always shift to new house?

Again ... this is more the individual dog rather than a breed characteristic ... A well bred Beagle is a confident & curious dog and they love exploring new places ... As long as the owner is there - most dogs adapt to new places quite well ... probably better than people ...

7 any problem when you started to have as a puppy? and until now?

Potential problems:

Beagles have become very popular - and for that reason, many puppy mills and backyard breeders breed Beagles ... This has resulted in many problems for the breed ... (a) Bad coat & skin (Beagles probably suffer from this worst of all) ... (b) Poor temperament ... such as aggressive or timid Beagles ... (c) Poor structure or conformation ... such as wong size, snippy muzzles, poor tail set ... bad paws etc ...

Our Beagle suffered from bad skin & coat ... she was infected with dermo mange and a viral infection ... it took nearly a year of constant care and nursing to sort out her problems ... the poor girl was under all sorts of medication etc etc ...

So ... very important to get your Beagle from a good breeder ... do a search and check the other threads on how to find and identify a good breeder ... Find a pup from a line of healthy strong dogs without skin or skeletal problems ...

A well bred Beagle is lovely to be with ... they are lively dogs, never dull ... always ready for adventure ... they get along with other dogs and with people ... and they love food ...

Cheers ... good luck ... Smile

Re: [tkahhean] Infomation of Beagle? [In reply to] Can't Post

yep..seems like the situation you are in now doesn't allow a beagle..nvm, you can still get a beagle later..no rush, right? besides beagle and GR, what other breed do you like? small/medium/big/giant? GR is a good companion..some GRs are not that big in size...like mine, he's only about 22 inches at his shoulders (sure disqualified for show...) and weight about 48 pounds. i keep complaining that he's too "small" for a GR coz they're suppose to be bigger. anyway, they also don't eat much. just one meal a day would be enough. unless you wanna make your dog to be a super couch potato!! hahah...Tongue
