Tricks Can't Post

Is there anyway to train a dog to do tricks? My dog cant even do shake hand, sit, down, roll, etc etc.

He only can do 1 thing! When I say 'PONG!', then he lay down, 4 legs up (sometimes) and freeze. I don't know where he learn this as I never teach him at all! Sometimes really makes me laugh!

I tried shaking his hand and repeat many time by saying 'Hand'. Did so many times yet still dunno how to do it. Sighhh....

hi raymondevil

to shake hand is really easy. u only need patience and your dog only needs treats.

hold your dog's paws, and tell him "shake hand" (or "paw", "hand"... whichever u prefer..). with his paw in your hand, give him a treat (make sure his paw is still in your hand while he is doing so) and praise praise praise.

let go of his paw, hold his paw again, say shake hand, and treat + praise again. just keep doing this repeatedly, and try saying the command without holding his hand.. see if he responds or not.

if still no, do it again and again until he gets the idea. some dog takes minutes to learn the trick, but mine took few weeks. u just have to keep practicing the concept on him. he'll soon get the idea.

anyway, like realitydreamer said, many other tricks suggestions were posted in this forum, u can try out the search engine provided :)

btw, how'd u know to use "PONG" command on your dog :o weird command... i should try that on mine. hehe.

regards,
hunter

I still remember the other time was watching "Thin Red Line" (a combat movie).. then my dog walk to me and then I just say "Pong" similar to bomb explode sound. Then he lied down on the ground and never move. I freaked out at first! Thought he got an heart attack and died.. hahaha... then I see his chest still moving... ahh... then only I knew it's a trick of his. But not sure where the heck he get the idea.. hahaha! Laugh

Re: [raymondevil] Tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

This is the way how I taught my furkid how to hand... The first time, I show him my hand (like shake hand with people) and said "hand", of cause he couldn't understand what does it meant, then I hold his hand and said "hand" again...then praise him... I put his hand down and repeat the same step again... and occasionally I put some treats on his hand when I hold his hand... at the end, when I said hand and show him my right hand and hold some treats on my left hand, he will give me his hand, then I will put the treat on his hand and praise him... so, he know how to hand with me. Once he know how to hand, is very easy to teach him how to change hand Wink.

Enjoy trying... Smile

Yeah.. cuteeeee.... but naughty also.. love to mark his territory all over the house... Pee here and there.. I think he use his 'willy' not to wee wee.. I think he treat his 'willy' as marker pen.. mark here and there.. hehehe... sometimes i just don't know how to deal with him. Once scold him, then whole day still in the cage and dunwan to come out.. Pampered him abit, then start to mark territory again.. sighhhhh

my dog really got attitude problem...

Re: [hunter] Tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

Just tested it yesterday with my dog on 'hand' command. It seems that he's so scared.. after I do hand and give him treats, he run straight to his cage and look at me one kind. when asked him to come out again, he came out and sleep on the ground. he don't even wanna stand to do hand shake at all... or is it 'hand' command mean something brutal to him? hehehehe.. seriously i got no clue..

Re: [raymondevil] Tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

this is weird.. shouldn't be this way...

does your dog actually enjoy the treats???? did he have any bad experience when giving his paw last time? maybe that is haunting him. really sounds like he's afraid or something.

btw, do bring your dog out for the event. it is a good time to socialise him with other dogs, or else he'll forever be timid and afraid of other dogs. a few outings, he'll be okay. u just have to make sure he's safe by your side :)

Re: [hunter] Tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah.. he love the treats... i don't think there's any bad experience with his paw ever since 3 weeks old puppy. nope, i got not much time staying at home.. normally travel here and there... i guess just have to bring him for a walk near the neighourhood to boost his guts. there's a dachshund opposite my house and got biten by other stray dogs and stay in the vet for weeks.. that's why i don't dare to bring him out. besides, by nature they are weak on their back and his leg is too short to fight with other dogs... can u imagine what will happen if 1 paw slap from any stray dog. surely he will be dead Pirate lying on the ground..

Re: [raymondevil] Tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

then i suggest u go slower with it, keep the sessions short, boost up his courage and most importantly, not only treat, but lots of praise.

no wonder u dare not take him out. but if got stray dogs isn't it possible to lift him up and... run for your life??? anyway, stray dogs are everywhere, u can't keep him at home forever.. a healthy puppy should be exposed to all kinds of environment, be it full of dogs or full of humans...

don't let the thought of your dog being attacked horrify you. try taking him to other places that's stray dog-free.

btw are u free to come for this Sunday's Responsible Dog Ownership day? u can bring him out and socialise him. a very good chance indeed.

well, i didn't make it to the outing... my dog practically freaked out when i put on the leash. Then he don't even wanna walk at all to my car. Then I didn't force him to go also. Normally he will be so happy to get into my car but dunno why that sunday morning he freaked out. Sigh.. saddening dog....Unsure btw, how's the event over there? lots of dogs around? seen any dachshund?
