I'm still new with my pup, just wondering someone can advise me whether is ok or not take the injection to prevent the heart worm disease. My pup - Sally now only 8mths plus. Please advise...
Do a search on heartworms ... there are lots of threads with lots of info ...
You vet will no doubt have advised you that the annual injection for heartworm is only effective when your dog is fully mature and reasonably stable in weight. The dosage is weight related. At 8 months, depending on the type of dog/breed - your dog may still have some growing to do.
There have been some reports that the annual injection has caused fatalities in dogs ... so each owner has to weigh the risks and make decision.
I have decided to go with the monthly oral medication.
Great to get your opinion, i've visited a vet nearby my house...actually he was the one who asked me to give injection to my pup (Sally). As yunno, i just bought Sally and i didn't know that there's so many thing need to give/do...
Anyway, i should do some survey b4 make a move to it. Btw, can I know what do you mean oral medication.
Yeaps ... there are some standard precautions that you will be required to take for your puppy ... Like (a) puppy vaccinations then later annual vaccinations (b) prevention against heartworm and (c) regular deworming ... etc ...
Oral medication means giving medication (including preventive medication) by mouth instead of injection etc ... (same same like when we take tablets or pills ... ) ...
Heartguard also comes in a cube-like form ... its slightly flavoured - so most doggies quite happy to eat it ... ...
yap, i will have to agree with you, surchinmy. There is actually a form of tablet that you can give your pup, lois. That too will have to depend on pup's weight. hence, then you won't have to worry about the fatalities of injections. The tablets is to be taken every month, same day.
get heartgard, its good and my GSD loves it. I give it to him once a month. DO NOT get the injection type even if your vet encourages it. I have read alot of postings on the GSD forum where I am at and some people have had bad experiences with that. Heartgard costs about rm60-70 per pack of 6 (half year supply) Dad to Robin, 2yr old German Shepherd staying in KL. Come visit Robin at < /mydogrobin>
I have forgotten to mention that there is a life-cycle for heartworms. I am not sure how long it is, but generally the hearworm needs time to grow multiply. If your dog is already infected with it, then heartguar* may not really be useful.
So, before I introduced Heartguar* to Mocha I asked the vet to test if she was positive with heartworms. It tested negative and then Heartguar* is given to her monthly as a precautionary measure.
hi there, is heartguard and heart worm injection the same? what happen was we send Jaz to the vet, took some blood samples and they gave her a shot. they advise me to do this annual and that's about it, do we still have to feed Jaz with heartguard tablets?
The heartguard (tablets) & the ANNUAL injection serve the same purpose ... namely, to prevent heartworm infestation ...
If the blood was taken to test for heartworm infestation & the injection was the ANNUAL anti-heartworm injection ... then you will not need to give heartguard (which is a monthly prescription) ...
*** But if you are not sure what the blood test or injection was for - then please CHECK WITH VET ...
CAUTION: There have been reports that the ANNUAL anti-heartworm injection can cause fatalities ... So please do consider all issues before making switch from monthly heartguard tablets to annual injection ...
Just one question, if I may: Did your vet give you the result of the blood test before giving the injection?

Yeap, first they took some of Jaz's blood then went through a test under some microscope, then they say she's free from this disease, and then followed by giving her the jab that is to be taken annually.
