Stranger Recognisation	Can't Post

Hi everyone,

I got a question... My shih tzu is about 4 months plus now. She's very obedient except for the occasional mischief. My problem is that she's frenly towards everyone and anyone... Someone at the gate outside and all other dogs are barking, she gets all excited and wagging tail non-stop...

How do yuo train a dog to bark at strangers but recognise frens? I know you usually dun have to train these things as they come naturally... but I think my Pecan is a little too frenly towards every moving thing...

Your help is greatly appreciated :)

hello,

your shih tzu is only 4 mths old, besides the fact that he's too young to recognize strangers yet,he's a shih tzu..a friendly toy breed. he is also a puppy. puppies are friendly, some are timid but they don't bark at strangers yet. Even if they do, it's because they want to the strangers' attention to play. Smile

don't worry. the barking will start soon enough..it depends on the individual dog. Some are earlier(6 mths or so) some can even take up to a year. Pretty soon, you'll be wishing that Pecan would stop barking, lol Smile

Hmmm, a shih tzu an utility dog? OK... now I am outdated on the progress of this breed. I would really love to know how they got under that category. Perhaps someone can enlightn me... sorry.

were out of topic lar....how to help small breed doggies be not so frendly with stranger loh!

i think most of us want our dogs to be frendly......especially those small breed wants

if u wan them to bark bark to strangers get a dog which has that temperant

i dun think shit tzu is aggresive lar..

I think give the puppy some time.. Jaz use to be like that too, till recently we noticed she will bark at 'darker color' ppl.... during our drives from Penang to KL, everytime we stop at the toll booth, she would start barking at the toll collector... and when we stop at traffic lights, if she sees Malay or Indians, she would start barking at them again!!! wonder why? Crazy

yea i think if they let the doggie out more often

they would know who is fren and who is not...

most of the small breed dog is friendly but definitely not a minpin. They are wary of strangers and loyal ONLY to their owners.

FYI, some shih tzu that I know of is aggresive and also very-very yappy ! dunno ask me why lar ...

Summer did the same thing too when we went down to PD. Saw dark colour skin people he will just bark at them ! darn....

Got this from the AKC Site and it was listed under the toy group session. Nothing was said abt the hunting dog.... (I'm confuse liao)

General Appearance
The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good weight and substance.

Even though a toy dog, the Shih Tzu must be subject to the same requirements of soundness and structure prescribed for all breeds, and any deviation from the ideal described in the standard should be penalized to the extent of the deviation. Structural faults common to all breeds are as undesirable in the Shih Tzu as in any other breed, regardless of whether or not such faults are specifically mentioned in the standard.

Temperament
As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.

This is interesting... I wonder why they react this way.. I thought dogs are color blind?
I wonder have you come across such situation, there are certain ppl, even if they are fairer... if they don't like means they don't like... each time they walked pass our house, Jaz will SURE bark at them....

they are colour blind
they can only see in shades of grey...got this after watching discovery channel
so if your darker then erm....ehhee well obviously they see u as WAYyyy darker also lar

everydog sure got aggresive lar..but generally the breed criteria says their loveable stuff

but due to nurturing they become like that loh.......

I say we joking only ... when you know and I know the truth even ... that Shih Tzu is fierce hunting dog ... attack lions in Africa long long time ago ... It's favourite ploy was to pretend to be a furry bush ... when unsuspecting lion approached ... the furball would jump up and grab the lion's ... *er ahem*... causing major pain and lion would faint ...

But then the ellow Celestial Emperor started his kennel in China, imported the Shih Tzu from Africa and started telling the Empress that the ShihTzu is toy dog ...

Now people even more confused and say Shih Tzu is "utility" ... hah yooh ... as in utility for what? ...
