Do I need to groom my beagle for show? Can't Post

Hi,

I am new to the show ring and will be risking embarasing myself in the forthcoming show in Sept.

I have a question here that I hope someone will enlighten me.

Do beagles really need to be groom for show? Will they look messy (for show standard) if I don't?

I have read books about beagles and they say YES and even show how to do it.
I am afraid to do it myself else I might end up having a bald beagle for show.

Ivan , if you are reading this post will appreciate if you could e-mail me at

Cheers:

Many doggie cheers,

Yes, I'm afraid you do have to groom your dog for a show. All dogs have to be groomed whether there's a show or not. Don't worry about bald spots Tongue They'll only appear if you over-do the grooming! You'll need to at least bathe your beagle and give him a quick brush. If you want, you can give the coat an extra shine by rubbing chamoise cloth over it. Have fun at the show! Smile

Apart from the coat, you will need to ensure that his nails are properly trimmed.

By the way, nice to have anotheir new exhibitor to the show. I have been embarasing myself at show ring but I do enjoy it Smile

Sorry I think I miss mentioning the word trim not just groom but trim. That is what I am afraid about doing. Anyone ever trim a beagle's fur?

If I'm not mistaken, beagles are short-coated, so there's no need to trim their fur. However, it's their nails that have to be trimmed. There's are quite a few discussions on nail-clipping/trimming on the board

Hi Toh,

Yes, I think you do need to trim your Beagle before the show. The whiskers need to be trimmed, the tips of the tail need to be modified. The nails need to be cut, the ears need to be cleaned because dirty ears will give a bad smell when the judge goes near. Just follow what the book told you.

Anyone shown an english cocker in a show here before?

I love the fuzzy fringe that naturally occurs in the cocker, but according to books, to look correct, one should "pull" the hairs off the forehead so it looks smooth not messy.

If I enter one of these ABC shows here, do i need to do this grooming and hair plucking?

Also, my new pup Luckey is really gorgeous, I think she will make a good show dog coz her parents both have fantastic bloodlines, but when the vet cropped her tail when she was young, they cropped it a bit short - it looks shorter than what I see in books. Will this matter in the show ring? (I mean, will she be penalized for this, even if the rest of her conformation, temperament, obedience etc is superb?)

I have handle Eng Cocker Spaniel before winning multiple CC/BOB. The coat at the forehead need to be slightly stripped or called rolling.

Yes, your Cocker needs to be groomed before showing, go find some books on show grooming for more detail information.

If everything of the dog is excellent, a slightly shorter tail is forgivable.

Hey, when you say "rolling" what do you mean? I've read books that say the top of cocker heads should be "pulled" rather than trimmed. But does this mean grabbing a bunch of excess fluff on the top of the head and just pulling with bare hands?

thanks :)
