Heartworm Vaccination Can't Post

I read the posts on heartworm. They were mostly on the tablets. Anyone used the annual vaccination yet?

Hi Lilk,

For the vet I goto, they normally take some blood sample from the dog and check it under the microscope. If ur dog is clear from heartworm, and your dog are not doing any vacination, don't think will cost much.

Vaccination is definitely not the correct term to be used for the heartworm prevention injection.

If you dog is younger than six month of age, you can start him on heartworm prevention tablet that need to be taken monthly. There are also annual heartworm prevention injection that can be administored on dog older than a year of age. Annual injection is not suitable for puppies because they are still gaining weight with each passing days. As the volume to be injected depends on the weight of the dog, what you have injected when your dog is 6kg is not good enough when your dog weight has increase to 10kg.

Older dog that wish to go for heartworm prevention program need to be tested for heartworm before doing so. Trying to detect heartworm by taking small sample of blood and look it under the microscope is not accurate at all. The is a need to go for antigen test which you cost you about RM 60.00.

There is no point to start on heartworm prevention tablet or injection if your dog has been infected with heartworm. Dog infected must first go through a series of treatment before starting on prevention program to ensure that the dog will not be infected again.

I have recently sent all my PUG for test and for a PUG that is 10KG in weight, the annual injection cost me about RM 100.00 per dog. This is definitely a good guideline for you to estimate the cost you will incur if you choose to go for injection.

Cheers

If you love your dog, then you should give him/her your best possible care. The chance of contacting Heartworm infection is slim but once infected, treatment is expensive and difficult and extremely stressful to the dog. You can either feed him a heartworm prevention tablet monthly or just give him an annual heartworm prevention injection.

Mr Khoo,
We just sent our rottweiler pup (4 months old) to the vet for his third vaccination on Tuesday and was advised to take him back on 8/10 for a heartworm jab.
Reading the mails in this thread, am I right to deduce that this jab is not essential and that there are other ways of prevention? If we use tablets, is there still a need for such jabs when the pup is older? If so, how old should he be?

If you choose to take tablet, then you will have to take one pill per month until your Rotti kick the bucket. On the other hand, if you feel that taking tablet is too troublesome, then you may want to opt for annual heartworm jab which offer protection for 12 months. In your case, I would go for tablet until your Rotti reach an age of about 18 months when his weight stabilized. The reason being your Rotti will gain much weight during the puppyhood and administer heartworm jab base on present weight is not accurate.

Heartworm prevention is essential if you love your dog. It cost you a little per month to offer your belove dog the best protection against the deadly heartworm.

Mr Khoo,
Thanks so much for your reply and advice. I have another question: after Ranger's 3rd vaccination on 17/9, the vet advised us to bring him back for a rabies jab on 8/10 - is that too soon?
It seems we have no choice about the jab because it is an MPAJ requirement for a dog licence.

If you are giving your doggie Heartgard, then your dog is protected against heartworm, roundworms, whipworms, lungworms. Hence, further deworming may not be necessary unless you want you want to protect your dog against tapeworm.

Heartgard is not effective against tapeworm.

If you have given Sunny Proheart Jab to protect him for 12 months against heartworm, then Sunny is also been protected against hookworm which ProHeart is effective against. As it is not effective against other common worms such as roundworms, you will need to deworm Sunny regularly.

Three weeks interval should generally be sufficient. If that is the requirement to get your dog licensed, please go for it.

Re: [Khoobg] Heartworm Vaccination [In reply to] Can't Post

Mr Khoobg

Recently, my friend took his lab (4mths old) for vaccination and heartworm jab.

What the vet gave is the vaccination jab [8 in 1] and 6 tablets of heartworm prevention. All of this cost him RM75 for the vaccination and RM70 for the tablets. Is this too costly?

The thing is after 6 months where the heartworm tablets finished, he needs to take his lab for a heartworm annual jab. Is this neccesary?

Is it too much to tell me the market price of :
- annual vaccination
- 6 months heartworm tablets
- annual heartworm injection
for dogs??
Regards
Lisa

Re: [lisachew] Heartworm Vaccination [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Lisa,

8 in 1 possibly mean that the VET give the Lab usual vaccine + vaccine for Corona virus. The charges for such vaccination seem reasonable. My usual VET charge RM 35.00 for 6 in 1 and RM 35.00 for corana virus.

As for heartworm, the VET should be giving the Heartgard for medium dog (Green Packing) and that cost between RM 60 ~ RM 70.00 and again the rate seem to be fair. I bought mine at RM 60.00

Heartworm prevention jab or tablet must be administered to the Lab for the rest of his life to protect him against heartworm. It cost me about RM 100.00 to jab my PUG (Pro heart) to protect him for one year and his weight is about 10Kg. The actual cost will depend on the weight of the Lab. You should be able to estimate from the rate I am paying.

Hi Khoo,

I think the one with Corona virus jab is 7 in one, but 8 in one should cover one additional type of virus, not sure what, u have any idea.

I think soo Boon. What I did was trying to tell LISA that the VET will normally charge additional RM 40.00 for the corona virus. With 8 in 1 in one single dose, I guess the price should be reduced substantially but apparently the VET just sticked to old pricing to make some extra money. VET is still a businessman somehow Smile
