Doggie Names! Can't Post

Dear all,

I am curious to know how we to come to select the name for our doggies. I reckon it's only fitting that I should start by sharing how we came up with ours...

Pepper is our 1st miniature schnauzer. She of a dark salt n pepper colouring so we ended up with "Pepper". Later on we found this suits her temperment cos' she the fiesty one who's the first to challenge anyone who approaches.

Later on, because our Pepper girl experienced separation anxiety, we got her a companion. We chose another female schnauzer(who's also salt n pepper) but this time, we wanted a more oriental/local flavour for her name. So we played around with our names and came out with "Lee Sha". Lee from my surname and Sha from my wife's SHAron.

Our last furkid turned out to be a male black n silver schnauzer. He's called Lee Ron and yes, the Lee came from my surname and the RON from ShaRON.

So let's hear it from you folks out here. I'm sure we all have a tale or two to share..Smile

Hi Authur

I am Lisa and Teddy is my darling Tzu. I guess you heard off me from Joon Keet huh?

ANyway, here goes the story of Teddy. Well, at first we actually named him Conan. If anyone think its the Conan the Barbarian....oh no no no... hahah it is not!! He is not barbaric at all!! Erm... except for his amoking once a while though hahaha.... Well, he was named Conan by Joon Keet and its from a detective comic "Conan" from Japan. Hahha too influenced by the story I guess. Anyway, I found it weird to call him Conan though, and I guess Teddy does not response well with it too.

Still I am looking for the right name for him which he can response when being call. I heard before that while selecting their names we need to include a sharp/high pitch in between the names so they will response better.

And then one sweet day, while I was playing with Teddy, kiss kiss and hug hug him... suddenly I found that he looks like a teddy bear with the perfect coloring too!!

So we named him TEDDY BEAR. Teddy for short! That's it!!!
Regards
Lisa

"Rex" was the imported (Germany) K9 trained GSD that I worked with in the early 80's. Highly intelligent, fully-trained K9, and needless to say, I was really impressed by him. I still remembered the owner had to pay Rm6K for him. Hell lot of $ then ..

Second reason was that I need to have a short-name (single word/sound) as recommended by some experts.

Later I found out that 'Rex' means 'Prince' in the Internet, which suit my Labby. Wink

George, my pug puppy was named by his first owner. We adopted him from an expatriate couple who was leaving the country.

It seems that after having him for two months, he responds "Kai Kai" (go for a walk) better than his own name. He doesn't seem to bother when I call his name: Georgie, Georgie but when I say "Kai Kai" he responds in no time by running to me and looking at me with his big eyes.

I think I would better change his name to "Kai Kai". LOLLaughSlySlySly

Hi Lisa!

So that's how Teddy got his name!Wink

He's one lucky doggie to have such a doting owner.

And yes, we should not pick names that can be confused with everyday commands like eg. "Mei" can be confused with "STAY!" Smile

BTW, does Teddy tend to drool? I have seen some Shih Tzus that does that a lot, so much so that some owners put a bib in front!

Hi there Wmeng,

Thanks for sharing this amusing story about George A.K.A "Kai-Kai"Smile

Personally, I am delighted whenever someone names their furkid with a local flavour. "Kai-Kai" is a good example! Oh yes, for those who are wonder what "Kai-Kai" means, it's walk-walk in the cantonese dialect!

So far I have yet to come across names like Manja, Wong-Choy etc.. My parents generation used more traditional names like Poppy, Lucky, Wong-Choy, Ah Kow etc..Wink

Hhmm...just worried that he might be fat for his size. Still remember my Teddy?

But then what is that bib thngy that you put infront? I hv no idea of it at all. Crazy

Hi Lisa,

The bib thingy I saw on some Shih Tzus are like those we put on babies/young children during feeding times to prevent food stains on their baju. Good thing Teddy does not suffer from excessive droolingSmile

Hi Arthur

Oh I see. Hhmm... nowadays we really treat our furkids like human baby huh? ~aheheh~ Laugh
Even, Teddy tends to jump around when in the training class asking for 'pou pou'! This is bad. He is so used to being 'pou pou' you see.

Oh yeah, I really like Brownie's character. He is so funny and friendly!!! My Teddy is shy- shy (scared sometimes) around strangers and other dogs. Eventually, he will warm up though.

Hi Lisa!

Even though Teddy is shy ,it's a good thing you enrolled him in the basic training class.

By bring him to the padang weekly, besides the obedience training, he's also get to socialise with other people and doggies as well. I feel that our furkids need to know that they are doggies and be proud of it! We sometimes tend to manja our furkids too much until they think that they are humans in a furcoat!Smile

Brownie is by nature, quite friendly and outgoing Shih Tzu. Beverly loves him to bitsWink! Everytime he comes over to our place, he and Lee Ron my 8mth old puppy will have a gala time chasing each other round the house!

Hi Arthur,

"Picture tells a thousand words" BUT this does not apply to this photo.. U only see 1 Quarter of Rex.. The remaining 75% ...surprise, surprise.. Wink
This photo was taken when he had a tough exercise, otherwise, no way I could take a shot.
I really wish I can bring him to the Padang....I don;t think I can make it this week though.

Hi CDMoo,

So Rex has much more than meets the eye! Wink

I saw in on TV that Labs are the ideal breed for seeing eye(guide) dogs. In fact, they quoted that 8 out of 10 guide dogs are Labs! Shocked Plus these highly trained dogs don't come cheap either. I recall the programme mentioned something about USD15k and above!

Well, we'll look forward to see U and Rex on the padang one of these Sundays then. Let us know n we'll look out for each other.

My parents generation especially my mum, were more modernised but "uniformed" in naming their doggies. Why uniformed? 'coz..... they would call all their male doggies Bobby and female, Lucy. We have had more than 10 Bobby and Lucy over the years.CrazyCrazy

Though we named the doggies with all the gorgeous names we could think of but would eventually ended up with the same name because of the influence of my mum. She was the one who had all the time with the doggies so.... BoBbY.... LuCy..... hahahaha.... SlySlySlySly

Just another story of mine about Doggie Names.

Hi

I am just worried that he is too shy that some other dog's friendliness may scare him off before he warm up to them.

hhaha...as a matter of fact... I really like Brownie a lot!! Such a darling. The funniest part is when he gets so excited with Teddy when we parted.

Well, Toffee is my tri-color beagle...didn't want a human name because it could be embarassing if a friend with the same name visited one day. Well, my favourite coffee is Caramel lattes so Toffee could have ended up being called Latte but my boyfriend thought that would be too lame....2nd choice was Caramel but decided that was too feminine so along that same train of thought...Caramel...brown sugary sticky sweeets...Toffee!!! If I ever got another beagle, a female, I've decided I would name her Caramel.

In he past, I had a spitz/basset hound mix names Pepe, a Japanese spitz names Mitsy (Uncle named her after Mitsy Gaynor?) and lab named Scamper (it was either Timothy (from Famous 5) or Scamper (from Secret 7)) Mom called him Duke for a few hours but we dropped it!

My friend has a pug with one lame leg and one eye (fought with other dog) and I said to her, that's not a dog, its a Tripod! so now, instead of calling her by her real name, sometimes we refer or call her Tripod.

Hi Toffee!

Yes, having human names can turn out to be a bit embrassing. There's a golden retrevier at the padang training grds with the same name as me..Arthur! Blush And he's got more hair on his head than me!Sly

I like the story about Tripod.. Very adept for a unique 3 legged dog!

Personally, I am a coffee addict too. Must "kena" minimum 3 cups a day.. Toffee sure will make my day!Sly

Smile hi! i m jasmine & my baby puggy (8 weeks old) is Guinness Ho Siew Keong.... yep! he has a full name.....

Guinness - coz he is black & stout, thus guinness stout, appropriately
Ho - that's my surname
Siew Keong - after my late husband's Wai Keong... so guinness is the 'smaller' keong-chai....

with strong encouragement from my very special friend, i decided to get a puppy after 118 days (last week) of my husband Kelvin Thean Wai Keong's passing away. Kelvin & I have known each other for 12 years & been married for 4 and a half happy, happy years... we have always wanted a puppy... my mom used to say, "why are u guys talking about getting a puppy, you should go and make babies!" Smile

i miss kelvin awfully..... it was terrible.... now with guinness around, and being a new mummy and all.. sort of makes me feel like i m doing what kelvin & i would be doing together as a family.... i know he would be proud of me now, handling baby guinness by myself... my parents & a very good friend gives me a helping hand every now & then.... still, i guess i miss him here with me - he is a great dog lover, as a matter of fact, a great animal person Smile. when we were staying with my in-laws, we have 2 dogs, they are still there with them.

as the famous saying goes.... life, must go on....

This one is for u Darling!!!!! Guinness would have loved u..... i know u r looking down on us from heaven.... i love u, Baby.... until we meet again....

Hi Jasmine,

Guinness Ho Siew Keong stands for a lot of things dear to you. There's a mixture of past memories, present challenges and future hopes, all rolled into one small furry package. He'll be one special doggie to his mama for sure! Smile

Thanks for sharing your story with us, sad as it must have been. All of us at one stage or later, could relate to your loss. The hope of being reunited with our love ones (both 2 and 4 legged!) at the rainbow bridge, hopefully will make our days here more bearable.

Like you put it so nicely, Life does indeed goes on...

Re: [arthur] Doggie Names! [In reply to] Can't Post

Just browsing through some of the old postings and here is my story...

My oldest dog (1 and 1/2 years old) was adopted from PAWs. She is a mongrel. We don't have the right name for her on the first few days. Then one day my hubby was jokingly teasing her saysing she is a "lau yeah" (literally transalated "old coconut" in hokkien). As she is brown that strikes us as the perfect name for her so we call her Coco.

Then our next doggie (9 months old) was a stray that found us and stayed with us. Since she is a stray she reminds me of a lost kid. So we call her Kiddo or Kid .

Then comes my beagle Belle. Saw that name if one of the beagle books and reminds me of the female character in "beauty and the beast".

Many doggie cheers,

Cheng See
