Snorts/Cough after drinking / Heatsore Can't Post

Hi,

Axel is 3 months and 1 week and hubby and I have our hands tied. He snorts/slighty coughs at the end of his drink of water. This does not happen when he drinks milk. Is this normal or is he drinking too fast? he does not cough otherwise.

We also noticed a little sore which oozes pus on his elbow. It doesnt cause him any pain, but the skin there is slightly red. Is this what a heatsore is ? Does anyone know what this is?

Deli & Theven

Ps- he has a fan permanently pointed at him.

Hi, Deli,

Welcome back to the forum. Have not heard from you for quite some time.

So you have brought Axel home finally. Congrats.

The forum has been quiet lately. Hopefully someone will come to your assistance soon.

hi
congrates on ur axel

anyway, how little is ur little sore? did it look like pimples? if it is it might be what we call a hot spot. this hot spot is due to the hot condition of your dog. it maybe allergic to something too. sometimes, by having a fan blowing directly on him is not enough..

hubby and i took him to the vet and we got an antibiotic/antiseptic cream for the elbow. but he does also have small pimples on his abdomen. is that from the heat as well ? is it a common 'nappy rash' that pups get?

does anyone elses dog snorts or coughs when drinking water?

Hi deli,

Is your dog drink from the bow place on the floor surface. Some dog gulp their food or water when they eat or drink in a bent over position. When they drink too fast, they may end up coughing. When they gulp, they also swallow a lot of gas along the way. This air can end up as foul smelling gas a while later.

Just my 2 cents

THanks for the dua sen though. I think thats the problem, since he does not have the same problem when he drinks milk ( i suppose the consistency of the liquid matters). ALso when he drinks off his water bottle ,..he seems ok....but does snort/cough sometimes.

we're just being very very careful because these are all symptoms we saw in the sick pup we had. however, the vet has cleared Axel of any respiratory problems, and he did say that Axel was 'very big boned'. He weighs 30 pounds right now!!

PS- what calcium dosage does everyone give their dogs?

Good on you Deli!!!

You asked ... what calcium dosage does everyone give their dogs? ...

Well, if you are feeding your dog with premier dry dog food ... it have all the required suppliments and that include Calcium too. Therefore, in my opinion ... you do not need any extra dosage.

May be by adding one 500mg of Vit. C and one 400 IU of Vit. E will be a better choice since your pup is still rather young at this stage!!!

Again, this is just my personal point of view for your references Wink .

Use a elevated bow or just place his water bow on top on something to increase its height so that axel does not need to bend too much when drinking water. That I believe will help to a certain extent.

Well, even with it elevated he does cough/snort. Every 7 out of 10 times at least. Will take him to the vet again next week. Otherwise he's fine.

At the moment I feed him with 300mg clacium (half a pill in the morning and half at night). Dog food brand is from Canada, and its not carried in most pet stores.

I was advised by the Vet to feed him with vegetable oil instead of fish oil, as fish oil might give him ceret beret.

Thanks for the advise !
