Hi RealityDreamer!

Caught this thread late. Hunter, Lulugirl and rest have more or less answered your queries. I would just like to elaborate a little bit more on the obedience trails and what the judges test for (at least in Malaysia)

This is extracted from the rule book..

MKA Obedience Trails

All dogs are eligible for obedience trails, even sterilized dogs and those that do not meet breed standard. The dogs must perform a wide variety of tasks, which are judged by human evaluators (judges). Points (or scores) are granted for performance. The trails test the skills of both dog and handler, who must devote the time in training and practice.

Pre-Novice Exercises
  1. Heel on Lead (40 points) – Dog (on leash) follows with its head and shoulder next to the handler’s leg. Includes starts, stops, left and right turns, fast and slow pace. A figure of 8 involving at least one stop is also traced. The dog must not pull ahead or fall behind.
  2. Stand Stay (10 points) – Dog (on leash) follows the handler with its head and shoulder next to the handler’s leg. On command, the dog is to stand steadily beside the handler on a loose leash. The judge would circle the dog and handler at a distance of about 1 meter. The dog must not move its paws or break the position.
  3. Recall (20 points) – Dogs sit at the end of a leash from the handler. Handler calls the dog, which must come quickly and then sit. On command, it then moves into a heel position sit.
  4. Sit Stay (15 points) – Dogs (off leash) must sit away from the handler for 30 seconds.
  5. Down Stay (15 points) – Dogs (off leash) must stay down away from the handler for 1 minute.

(Note: The Sit Stay and Down Stay exercises are done in a group fashion - Arthur)

The dog and handler must obtain a minimum of 70 points out of a total of 100 to be listed a qualifier. The team with the highest points will win the class.

Novice Exercises
  1. Heel on Lead (20 points) – Dog (on leash) follows with its head and shoulder next to the handler’s leg. Includes starts, stops, left and right turns, fast and slow pace. A figure of 8 involving at least one stop is also traced. The dog must not pull ahead or fall behind.
  2. Heel Free (30 points) – Dog (off leash) follows with its head and shoulder next to the handler’s leg. Includes starts, stops, left and right turns, fast and slow pace. A figure of 8 involving at least one stop is also traced. The dog must not pull ahead or fall behind.
  4. Recall (20 points) – Dogs sit at the end of a leash from the handler. Handler calls the dog, which must come quickly and then sit. On command, it then moves into a heel position sit.
  5. Sit Stay (15 points) – Dogs (off leash) must sit away from the handler for 1 minute.
  6. Down Stay (15 points) – Dogs (off leash) must stay down away from the handler for 3 minutes.

The dog and handler must obtain a minimum of 75 points out of a total of 100 to be listed a qualifier. The team with the highest points will win the class.

Intermediate Exercises
  1. Heel Free (35 points) – Dog (off leash) follows with its head and shoulder next to the handler’s leg. Includes starts, stops, left and right turns, fast and slow pace. A figure of 8 involving at least one stop is also traced. The dog must not pull ahead or fall behind.
  2. Stand for Temperament Test (10 points) – Dog (off leash) must stand still while the judge examines the back. The handler must be at least 7 meters away.
  3. Drop on Recall (20 points) – Dog (off leash) must stand still where it is left and promptly obey the handlers command to come, to down and to come again when called from the down position.
  4. Distance Control (30 points) – The dog must heel and stay, come and finish from a distance. The handler may use voice, signals or both.
  5. Retrieve Over High Jump (25 points) – The dog is commanded to stay and the handler throws a dumbbell over the high jumps. The dog is sent to retrieve the dumbbell and the god must jump over the high jump on the way out and back.
  6. Broad Jump (15 points) – The dog, on command, must jump the entire width of the jump and return to the handler.
  7. Sit Stay Out of Sight (25 points) – Dog (off leash) must sit, out of the handler’s sight for 3 minutes.
  8. Down Stay Out of Sight (25 points) - Dog (off leash) must stay down, out of the handler’s sight for 5 minutes.

The dog and handler must obtain a minimum of 150 points out of a total of 200 to be listed a qualifier. The team with the highest points will win the class.

Open Exercises
  1. Heel Free (40 points) – Dog (off leash) are required to work as a team. During the heeling routine, the dog will be required to sit, stand and down in motion.
  2. Distance Control (25 points) – The dog is to work at heel in response to voice or signal, but not both, and promptly respond to the handler’s commands at a distance.
  3. Send Away (20 points) – The dog, on command, is to be sent away to a designated distance and placed in a down position.
  4. Retrieve Over High Jump (30 points) – The dog is commanded to stay and the handler throws a dumbbell over the high jumps. The dog is sent to retrieve the dumbbell and the god must jump over the high jump on the way out and back.
  5. Broad Jump (15 points) – The dog, on command, must jump the entire width of the jump and return to the handler.
  6. Scent Discrimination (25 points) – The dog must select the correct scented cloth from a group and retrieve it.
  7. Group Stand Stay (20 points) – Dog (off leash) must stand steadily in a group with other dogs until the completion of the exercise and must not show undue resentment or shyness.
  8. Down Stay Out of Sight (25 points) - Dog (off leash) must stay down, out of the handler’s sight for 10 minutes.

The dog and handler must obtain a minimum of 160 points out of a total of 200 to be listed a qualifier. The team with the highest points will win the class.

Hope this helps.. Rdgs Arthur

Re: [ALL] Obedience Competition Commands [In reply to] Can't Post

THANK YOU so much for taking the time to type this out!Smile It's really useful and really helps me alot.

btw, i noticed in obedience trials during some kind of retrieveing exercise, that the dog would retrieve by walking at his normal pace. If the dog were to run and maybe shake the dumbell(i think its called something like that?) a little as though it was playing, would he be disqualified? Of course the dogs retrieves and returns perfectly(stopping in front of his master etc. )..

Hi RealityDreamer,

You're most welcomedSmile.

To answer your question, during the retrieve excercise, the dog were to run/shake the dumbell, would he be disqualified?

IMHO, (me no obedience judge) as long as the dog completes the intent of the retreive excercise, then this behaviour should not be penalised. Remember, this excercise calls for the dog to jump over the hurdle, retreive the dumbell in his mouth, and jumps back over the hurdle with the dumbell, goes back to you smartly, sits close to you. Wait for the command to "give", release the dumbell and finish back to the heel position.

Each dog starts the excercise with the max marks allocated. For eg. 25marks for retreive over high jump in the intermediate level. From the moment the steward ask you "are you ready?" and you answer "yes", the judge would be looking out for any faults incurred throughout the excercise till the steward says."Excercise finished!".

Faults like how the dog sits next to you at the start of the excercise (minor), to the dog dropping the dumbell repeatdly or did not jump over the hurdle (major). If the faults incurred totals to more than 1/2 of the max. points for the excercise, you will be disqualified, in this eg. more than 12.5 deduction will fail the excercise.

Hope this helps..

Re: [arthur] Obedience Competition Commands [In reply to] Can't Post

ok,before i forget, here's another question in my mind.

When the dog "gives" must he drop the dumbell on the floor or in the hands of his handler? or is this up to the judge?

and also after "giving" does the dog have to return to a heel position on command? or is this already expected without the command?

Re: [RealityDreamer] Obedience Competition Commands [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi RealityDreamer,

Q."When the dog "gives" must he drop the dumbell on the floor or in the hands of his handler? or is this up to the judge?"

A. The dog is to relax his jaws to ease the grip on the dumbell so that his handler can take it easily without having to pull or yank.

Q. "and also after "giving" does the dog have to return to a heel position on command? or is this already expected without the command?"

A. After giving, the handler waits for the "finish" command from the steward. He then signals the dog to return back to the heel position. If the dog goes to the heel position before this, marks will be deducted for anticipation.

Hope this helps. Rdgs Arthur

Re: [RealityDreamer] Obedience Competition Commands [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi RealityDreamer,

You are most welcomed. Obedience training can be a most rewarding sport. It builds the foundation for a solid, close bond between handler and dog. Watching a good handler/dog team in action is like watching poetry in motion..(at least to me lor!Angelic) The handler is confident in himself and the dog. The dog senses this and is in turn, alert and happy to perform cos' it wants to please the owner. Wohee! I have taped some obedience heelwork from Crufts show (aired over Astro) and still is amazed at the standards shown by the handler and dog there.

On a side note, will you be joining us in the coming PD trip?

Do make every effort to go as we have amongst us, two obedience judges , who besides having a vacation with fellow doggie owners, are also willing to share their experiences with us. A chance NOT to be missed..
