hello homer9674,

well the difference btw the australian n the taiwan shih tzu's is basically the size. taiwan shih tzu's tend to be smaller in size....i dunno whats this thing about breeding smaller sized dogs. shih tzu's arent supposed to be so small...geez they belong in the utility group and not the toy...instead of producing something more closer to the breed standard ppl are doing the opposite...i personally prefer the australian type as they conform more to the breed standard....and i noticed that they tend to have less health problems and better coat textures...for more info you can mail me at kanchiny@hotmail.com and i'll refer you to some websites regarding the shih tzu standards...

regards

kanch

Re: [kanch] HELP AUSTRALIA SHIHTZU ??!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Just to make the standard clearer. In both Australia and Taiwan, there are big and small Shih Tzus. Taiwan does have big shihtzus that they show.... In Australia, they do show smaller ones as well.

The English or ANKC standard calls for "not more than 10 1/2 inches height at withers" for their Shih Tzus. On the other hand, the AKC standard says an ideal shih tzu should be about 9-10 1/2 inches height at withers. And they strengthen a point that the Shih tzu should not be lesser than 8 inches or more than 11 inches. So 8-11 inches and that could varies very differently in size and all are still within the size of the Shih Tzu. The ANKC standard says overall balance is more important than size alone. And if two dogs (a big and a small) are of equal merit, its up to the judge to decide which is the correct one..... Unlike the Chihuahua standard... when two dogs (small and big) of equal merits, smaller should be given priority.

my shih tzu's ancestor is imported from australia. but then whether she's an australian breed or not, i'm not sure. but then she is rather small lor. could be becos she's not eating much lor.

actually it's quite hard to judge lor. I also wan to learn more about the breed standard lor. as i did plan to get another companion for my shih tzu lor.

Different countries have different breed standards, the Australian and Malaysian Standard I believe is similar and the reason for many Australian shih tzu in Malaysia is there is no need for quarantine I believe...

Taiwan - I do not know which standard they follow. But I believe the Taiwan shih tzu from "puppy farms" are much cheaper than most Australian shih tzu.

The reason for the different looks is not only the breed standard but because of breeding practices and ethics - in any country there will be ethical breeders and puppy millers, the ethical breeders will be breeding shih tzu to the standard and they look like shih tzu, the puppy millers on the other hand just breed and breed with complete disregard for the standard and health issues, thus the shih tzu they breed usually barely look like shih tzu...

Breeder of BIS - BISS - BJIS - BBPIS - BBPISS, Champion and Grand Champion Shih Tzu.
