Can an old dog learn new tricks?? Can't Post

Hi!

I'm having lots and lots of problems with my Min Pin, Ah Kow. I've had her for about a year and she's about 5 this year. She is such a darling but the major put off is that she's had absolutely no training. Her previous owners put her on a leash and tied it to their fence and because of this shes been trained to urinate on tiles! A real nightmare....

I've managed to sort of toilet train her and make her sit but that's about it. She's very protective of her food to the extent of growling and biting anyone (even me!Frown) who goes near her bowl. She's also not sociable as she always wants to pick a fight with other dogs (she doesn't seem to realise she's almost always less than half their size...). And she has this bad habit of "merajuk-ing" when i'm gone from the house for too long (anything more than half a day), she'll urinate all over the house.

Apart from the behaviour issues she's a really great companion. Can't live without her so I'm trying to make living with her more tolerable. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has some advice or any information on behaviour classes where we can go to get some serious help...

Thanks!Sly

Hi Kowie !

Well, your min pin is really adorable. But if you have read their history they are also stubborn and they think that they are a BIG dog. They just don't realise their size !

Ok, I gtg now... let me explain more of the Min Pin's temprement in a later post tonite ya !

Btw fyi, I got 2 minpin myself named Mocha and Summer ! I'm sure you can guess the name of that particular minpin shown on my avatar.

Re: [Kowie] Can an old dog learn new tricks?? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kowie !

Sorry for the delay in replying !

Anyway, as I have said earlier MinPin's attitude is like a BIG dog. They just never realise that they are actually very small in size. FYI, any dog will growl if you simply touch their food.

For the being sociable part, since you already posted here that she was always fenced to the gate and all that I'm sure she didn't have any chance earlier to meet and socialise with any other dogs before that's why she is behaving the way she is right now. Do bring Ah Kow to come and join us at the gathering (put her on leash first) and try and get her to get use to meeting people and all dogs there. She might gives you a surprise or two there !

As for the "merajuk-ing" well all dogs like to get attention from owners. If she feels that by urinating all over the place she gets your attention more then definitely she will keep doing it.

Try to change that and whenever you come back home - talk to her, tell her no wee-wee in the house and all that. See if she listens. Then maybe you could spend some time talking to her before you leave your house when u know that you are going to be home late.

Do keep us updated on your training ok. I believe its never too late to teach a dog new stuff if given patience, love and care ! They just learn slower (maybe) Good Luck !

cheers,
minglmy

Hi Ming Yang!

Thanks for the advice!!! Sly Well I have tried to tell her to go in the shower in the past... Quite effective when she's in a good mood. Anyways, we'll give your suggestions a go and hopefully she'll be "rehabilitated" soon!Sly By the way, where and when is the gathering? We would love to go but I'm kinda' worried she'll misbehave....Unsure

Thanks again and maybe I should join you in the Min Pin forum...

Hi!!

I took a look at the pics and they are all soooo gorgeous!!! Smile Are you bringing all of them to the gathering??? Would love to me you and them!

As for Ah Kow.. I think I'll bring her on her leash and see how it goes.. If she's too "unfriendly" it's pretty easy to pick her up and put a stop to the "unfriendlyness".. Should be ok right?

Smile hi , i have a minpin myself..

he's called mitcher and he's currently 3 yrs old.. haha.. you can see his picture from the avatar right?
well as i know minpin is kinda stubborn, and most of the time they do think that they are the boss !! this is what my mitcher did to me.. dunno who's the boss... they are very hard to train in toilet train.. but then once they know how to pee and poo they will remember how to do it forever.. thanks goodness my mitcher boy i don't need to teach him how to pee and poo.. he knows where to pee from the first day.. wah sooo happy no need to teach him .. i wonder how he knows? still an X-files..
yup.. they are very obsessive, especially with the things you give them.. food, toys, clothes, beds, and ect.. all you have to do it's to let him know who's the boss.. as for mine, i'm only his mummy.. no boss !!
minpins is very attach to humans (owner) and they always want you to be around and they know what's in the house and expect you not to mess up with the things in the house.. weird right? but that's what minpin is.. hope you have fun in taking and re0teaching your minpin ok ? hope i did help you !Smile

Hi Yumiko!!

Thanks for the info!! Now I don't think her behaviour is so weird... The toilet training is getting slightly better (hope I didn't jinx it!) she pees in the shower now.Smile

You're totally right when you say they think they're boss. Ah Kow's the boss in the house, she gets upset when I move rugs and stuff like that! At least I know why now!Smile And sometimes when I'm trying to be the "boss" she sort of fights back, pushing me and stuff. It's really funny coz' she's so small! Hehehe..

You're so lucky your Mitcher was toilet trained when you got him! What a great combination, cute and well behaved! Lucky you!!Sly Anyway, are you going to the gathering?? We would love to meet both of you. I'm getting all excited already and I don't think my little miss has a clue... Anyway, hope to see you there!

Hi!

Your info really made me feel better. I thought I wasn't taking care of her properly and that led to her behaviour issues. Hehe! I know what you mean by the "innocent face", I got no heart to scold her when she puts it on! Dunno whether that's a good thing...Unsure

Your Mitcher sounds sooooo cute! I'll definately look out for him at the gathering. So nice lah you got a small "bodyguard".Sly Come to think of it, for a small dog he's quite "macho" with the "bodyguard" thing going.Sly Ah Kow's not too fond of clothes so I don't make her wear t-shirts. If not very obscene, she'll keep stripping.Tongue So she normally wears funky collars. Anyway, I think you'll be able to spot us, she'll probably be the only one on a leash...Frown Oh! And don't let her hear you think she's cute, if not when we get back I'll be getting MAJOR attitude from the little princess... Hehe.. She sure very "perasan". Smile

Anyway, I'll have a look at Mitcher's pictures. Hopefully he and Ah Kow can be friends..

Re: [Kowie] Can an old dog learn new tricks?? [In reply to] Can't Post

hiya,

hehe. this thread seems to be "infested" by min pin owners :))

it's really funny that u say ah kow is like a bottemless pit :) anyway, i've seen OVERWEIGHT min pins before. it's best for your dog to be too thin than to be too fat, as a fat dog will be less active and are more prone to encounter health problems :/

like realitydreamer said, as long as u can feel the ribs with no trouble, she's okay.

ps : many people at the gathering will have their dogs leashed as there are often a huge number of dogs (big and small) attending that day. so don't worry, u won't be the only one to leash ur dog)

we could use a doggy stripper to lighten up the mood there on that day :)) could entertain horny male dogs, including mine. hehe.

regards,
hunter

Hi!

I saw some of the pics from the previous gathering and your info really made me feel better about having to bring her on a leash. If not feel bad lah... Like spoiling her fun! Sly

Umm... I think people are going to bring their kids so I don't think any strip shows would be too welcomed. Anyway, the majority of the people who have met her think she's male so I don't think the males will be too intersted.Unimpressed

Anyway, I'm sure Ah Kow would love to prove to you that she can really eat. I don't mind but you must provide the food!Wink Haha! Don't think she'll ever get fat, she's always on the go and fat Min Pins look weird. Like some sort of mini bolster with sticks for legs...Unsure Plus, wouldn't want her to have more health issues.

Give you furkid a big kiss for us, he looks so leng chai. Haha!Wink

huh ? your minpin likes to strips?? wah.. big matter leh.. she's girl girl leh... hahaTongueabout having a leash on your minpin, i think she you shoulld llet her off leash once or twice lar cause it's a gathering for doggies and they should socialised a little... but it's all up you.. as if you can manage to handle her or not and you must know if she will obey your comands on that day or not.. if not... then she had to be leash lor...

Yah!! She's not shy... Hmm.. Too bad I feel "malu" for her!Tongue

I got a big plan for the gathering already. I think I'll wake up early and walk her first so she'll be less hyper later... Maybe then she'll listen to me.Unsure Still a bit worried that she might get unfriendly with larger dogs, I think she feels intimidated. But I guess I'll give it a go, worse come to worse, I'll have to carry her.

Maybe she'll behave when she sees your Mitcher.. Hehehe..Wink
