Tricks to get a or puppy's trust Can't Post

Well, I've tried before with other's puppy, especially when a puppy is encoutering a stranger.

[list=1]

[*]Stand in front of the puppy. The puppy will bark at you.(You should have food for the puppy in your hand and you are suppose to stand outside one's house)

[*]DO NOT open the gate.

[*]Throw the food for the puppy until it stops barking.

[*]You can walk by the puppy or play with it.

Note: You have to do this process every day. If you stop doing it for a week, the puppy will revert its reconition to you as a stranger.

Did it work? I recommend food like cheese.

I think it'll work but I don't think its good for the dog or its family.Unsure

The dog might learn to associate strangers with food. This way a robber/intruder can easily poison and kill the dog/puppy.Unsure

There different ways to gain a puppy's trust without food but with patience.Smile

It's best to do on a puppy, but I suggest not to do on an adult dog (or big sized dog). It's more dangerous.

Another way is, (this can be done only if you have relation with the dog owner, and you visit the dog owner's house with a good purpose) the dog owner will command his/her dog to stop barking.Visit the house regularly if you want/can, and watch the dog's behaviour for a long period.

I thought we suppose to encourage dogs to bark at stranger and stop only when we open the gate for our friends?
I think a good way is to scold our dogs when they bark at us but just keep quiet when they bark at stranger.
I used to have a friend who owns an Alsation. He always scold the dog when he barks. Now when stranger comes in, the dog keeps quiet and when the owner comes back, he barks. Weird?Crazy

hey there,

don't know abt you..but I don't bother training my dogs this way. In fact, i encourage them to bark at strangers. It makes them great watchdogs and natural doorbellsTongue

Example:

One day, my dog was barking really madly. She had a different bark..a very fierce one. I've only heard it once when I saw someone climbing over the wall. Well, that day she was barking like that. I got scared, locked everything, tried to bring her in but she refused to come in. I didn't see anyone though. You know why? Coz my neighbours housed was being ROBBED. Yup, in broad daylight at 4 pm. My neighbour was held hostage and the whole family was tied up till they cleaned the house.

I leave it up to my dog to judge my guests. She can judge really well. Once the guests are in the house, she stops barking. If she likes them(the guests mean well),she'll go up to the guests and get some pats. If she doesn't(for some reason or another),she'll sit by me and watch them. If she's ok with them, she'll take a nap and watch them.

No,my dog isn't a dog bred for guarding, she's a cocker spaniel mix terrier.

As mentioned by the members.. the last thing you want to teach your dog is to take food from strangers.. many dogs have died due to poisoning.. Sad to say, I've experience that myself before.. My lovely doberman died due to food poisoning.. how sad... Unsure

Can a moderator move this thread to the General forum? I think this is not the right forum to post this thread.

Thank you.
