Oh man, if you had actually paid attention to a dog's activities for a couple of minutes, you would have known the answer.

They use their tongues as washcloths & toilet paper & eat whatever food they manage to find off the dirty floor. What do you think?

They are filthy. The clean thing is an urban legend.

Where this urban legend originated:
"It has long been noted in the medical literature that human bites are more likely to become infected than those of other mammals, including dogs. Statistics to that effect were published in journals and repeated by medical professionals, and folk wisdom took off from there."
