Understanding the Microchipping process Can't Post

This post is for owners of Pedigrees to understand what it means to have an MKA-cert, why it is important, why MKA certified pups are more expensive, how pups are certified & why you cannot buy a pup from a pet shop and hope that you can get it certified later.

MKA is like our IC Department. The IC department issues our IC number & they have all the records of our past history. Our parents had to apply for our IC when we were 12 years old. For dogs, the breeder has to apply for the cert for the puppies he bred. MKA issues the microchip numbers & the Pedigree certs and these bear all the records of the dog’s family tree, the breeder’s name, address, telephone number etc etc. Just like our ICs, the certification process is filled with rules & regulations.

1) Why is it that you cant apply for an MKA cert after you’ve bought your pup from the pet shop? Because the certification process begins long before the puppies were born. It begins at the mating stage between the Dam and the Sire (which must both be MKA registered). Their certificates, along with signed declarations from both owners (of the Dam and Sire) stating that they are the rightful owners & have witnessed the mating, together with the DATE of the mating must be reported to MKA within 28 days of the mating on the Mating Certificate Form 1. If this form is submitted late, the pups will not be registered at all & there will be no pedigree cert. This is to prevent fraudulence/cheating/bluffing/etc people using the stud without the knowledge of the owner etc, etc.

2) With Form 1 submitted ON TIME, MKA will then acknowledge your submission with another form with the expected date of whelping (pup’s birth) written on it. Again, this is to prevent people from suddenly producing a litter of pups that were born long before or long after the expected due date as those pups cannot possibly have come from the mating that was reported.

3) When the pups are born, the breeder has ONE month to register the pups. 2 coloured photos showing the Dam and the pups also have to be submitted together so they can check that the pups correlate with the dam. Sometimes, MKA will come & check the puppies.

4) The breeder will have to apply for a Kennel Name. That will cost about RM100 for members.

5) The registration fee for 1 puppy is RM 30 + RM18 for the microchip, that means RM48. If you have 10 puppies, that will be RM432 along with the fee of 10 microchips. Yes, the registration fee goes down by a few dollars for more puppies. And that is why an MKA cert pup costs more.

6) Upon going in to register the pups, you will already have to have your kennel name & the names of the pups in mind. You will then have to fill up another form and submit it.

7) When your application is approved a few weeks later, MKA will inform you to collect your microchips from them & each microchip numbers will be correlated with the registered names of the pups.

8) You will then need to take the microchips to a vet to have them implanted. The vet will ensure that the right chip goes into the right pup. He will then have to sign & chop the form that he did the implanting and you will have to return the form to MKA. You have up to six months to do this but most breeders will have it done by 6 weeks, at the time when the pups receive their first vaccination. That is why, the vet will always place the sticker bearing the microchip number on the vaccination card so that no mistake is made.

9) MKA will then take 2 to 4 months to issue the physical certificate (on paper). The certificate will bear the breeder’s name, address & telephone number along with 3 generations of the pup’s bloodline – who his parents/grandparents & greatgrandparents are & where they come from (imported? Which country? Champion line? Etc etc). These certs will be sent to the breeder & it is then the breeder’s responsibility to give the certs to the new owners (if the pups have been sold by then). The new owners should then transfer the ownership of the dog to their own name. It is exactly like buying a car.

That is why it is important to have an MKA cert. You know exactly where your puppy came from and that it is a genuine certified pedigree. As you can see, MKA takes many steps to prevent fraudulence as best they can. By studying the bloodline and the kennel name written on the cert, experienced breeders will know whether the pup came from a good line or not. You yourself will also know whether you paid money for a genuine ‘product’.

Responsible breeders have nothing to hide. They will happily provide the buyer of their puppies with photocopies of the parent’s certificates for perusal. If they are the owner of both the Sire and the Dam, they will also show you the parents when you visit.
