I must say I'm not a big fan of that dog breed. My bro used to own one but he opted to sell it because of its bad behaviour and aggression problems.

I'm having 1 currently... he is very manja type, but this have to depands on your luck... about take caring them, for me is very easy... i just bring him to be groom 2 times a year because i'm keeping his fur long, but have to bath them at lease 3 times a week because its kinda smelly for me because of the long fur... and drying his hair needs to take around 1 hour.

For my current cocker, he is kinda scare to be alone, i need to spend more time with him compare to my schnauzer... but he is very friendly, and he will hug my leg without letting me go wherever i go if he didnt see me for a few days... thats make me worth to spend more time with him...

Re: [jeszebel] how do you care for a cocker spaniel [In reply to] Can't Post

I got 2 cockers. 1 pure American cocker, the other probably got a little bit of english blood. But still look american enough. I prefer the american ones as compared to the english looking ones. Cos american ones look dumber and looks like as if they always have something up their sleeves. Hahaha...

Generally they are quite easy to take care off except the grooming lah. They shed quite a lot. Ppl say they shed 2 times a year. But since i got 2 of them and i think they are not on the same shedding schedule, so to me, they shed 365 days a year. 1 of them is shaved botak cos I lazy to comb. So that one professional grooming only 2 times a year. The other one, cocker look memang cocker look lah. But its been months since the last professional grooming. Think I'm gonna go botak with this one too this time around.

Behavior wise, they are supposed to be playful, lively, mischievous, fun. Thats what makes them cockers. Aggression can be overcome. Depends on how u train ur dog. Cockers with aggression problem is quite rare. Usually the case of backyard breeders's litter. But then again, any dog irregardless of bloodline can be aggressive. I've seen a super aggressive min pin before. Seen a super aggressive shih-tzu before too and yet we all know shih-tzu are lap dogs. So lapdogs are not supposed to be aggressive right?

My 2 cockers, older one loves to growl at the smaller oner because the smaller one loves to bully the older one. So is that aggressive? To me, as long as they know their limits, they can growl for all they want. As long as they dont attack for no reason, dont bite people or other dogs unneccesarrily, they are ok. After all they are DOGS.

But they definitely love attention. The smaller one will follow me like koyok if I allow him to.

Health wise, they are more prone to ear infection because of the big ears. So making sure they are dry all the time is extremely important. My big cocker kena ear infection 2 times in the course of 1 yr before. Now i just hentam ear powder everytime after bath. So far so good *TOUCH WOOD* Crazy The bigger cocker also seems to have more skin problem like allergy and rashes. So thats why i shaved him bald. Easier to apply medication. The smaller cocker, get himself all dirty with pee and poo also still ok. I think the skin tebal like kerbau already.

So besides their shedding problem, if you do not have asthma or any breathing problems like over sensitive nose, and can live with fur on your food, bed, table, towel, carpet, rugs, car seats, black clothes and fur in your drinks, nose, eyes, hair, purse, wallet, between the keys in your handphone, TV remote, then a cocker will make a very good companion. If you cannot live with anyone of the mentioned situation above, then u might want to reconsider this breed. Good luck then!

I had a 1.5yr ECS, some said he looked more like a cross of ACS & ECS, well the breed is not so much of a concern but its his temper that had caught us (the carers) unaware. He had all the characteristics & traits mentioned above but not as simple when handling, my family had been keeping mongrels over the years, this is the first time we had a pedigree (i took over ownership from somebody who cannot cope & wanted to give up), so this is where the 'fun' begin. He is at times quite moody & temperamental, e.g. when i was playing with him & my sister beside me wants to join in the play, he will growl & snap at her out of a sudden, he does that to me as well. A more recent incident was when another family member was putting Frontline on his neck, he suddenly turn & bite her hand, almost all of us had experienced his unpredictable behaviour, although his biting was just short snap that left only bruises or light bleeding, even his vet is quite afraid of him even though they know each other and met for few occasions for vaccine, skin problems etc. He can be so unpredictable that i had to be cautious whenever i bring him out to socialise with other dogs for the training session.

Wink
Used to have 3 CS when i was younger.. that time too young to care for them, but i know when feeding time, we used to band their ears up so they[ears] wont get dirty.. but after sometime, we stopped cuz they[dogs] kept rubbing it off.
Long haired spaniels hv to be groomed often ler, else it'll get tangled easily...N yea, mine shed all the time too..regardless of short or long haired. we used to put them in the porch, bcuz of their shedding..
N just be careful esp when bathing, cuz of the long ears n all..:) wouldnt wanna get it wet, then infected..
I remember one male spaniel, Toby, an aggresive dog. Bites, Growls n bullys. But then, i rememeber when Toby was brought home, he was kinda big.. but i cant r/ber how old. I was always afraid of Toby. Frown They can be good guard dogs ler..Mine were..:) hehehe..

Re: [jackymch] how do you care for a cocker spaniel [In reply to] Can't Post

Are you talking about the British cocker or the American cocker? And if it's british do you mean the cavalier kind charles cocker spaniel?

The british spaniel does not have that 'cocker rage' trait - which is commonly seen in the american breed. It;s funny because american cockers, like their british counterparts, used to be known for their gentleness and sweetness, but after they became very popular, over breeding, poor selection and puppy mills led to the very aggressive cocker (it's so known that 'cocker rage' is a widely known term). Must have been a couple of aggressive cocker spaniels who won shows because of their looks and then subsequently were overbred - now the aggression gene is prevalent in the breed.

The british cocker spaniels are not mean or temperamental and are extremely affectionate and social little dogs, but they are subject to their own genetic problems - their heads have been bred smaller and smaller now to the point where there are some dogs whose brains are too big for their skulls - causing them to be in huge amounts of pain, epileptic fits etc.

As far as I know Rage Syndrome affects both ACS and English Cocker Spaniel and not the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. ECS and CKCS are a totally different breed.

I know you have just read form the English media abt the skull problem affecting the ckcs....but its all blown out of proportion. The UK and Australia breeders are doing their part in correcting the bias reporting.
