URGENT ---aggressive dog Can't Post

it all starts like this , i've got a 1yr old male mongrel , named sparco . his behavior towards me has changes alot . i cant handle the dog anymore , whenever i hold his collar he tends to growl and tries to bite .it all started as usually when it rains i let him in the house , sometimes he sits on the couch , recentlly when i pulled him down from the couch with his collar he started to growl at me .few days later i had to hold him with the collar to let my fren park his car in the house (had to hold him or else he run's out ) tis time he growled and turned back towards me(stared straight at me ) tried to free himself very vigourouslly while attempting to bite also . this also happened again the next day when i had to tie him while parking my car in the .i do admit that i myself was very angry and threatened to beat him ,but instead he growled at me again .i did read alot of article's relating to aggression .....and looks like i did contribute alot( cant help it now) .i have given him alot of "manja" i guess .he is only like this towards me , he's fine with all my other frens .this is quite frustrating for me because i handle him most of the time . i think some of u might understand how it feels when the dog u love alot turns its back to u. some articles also say that sexual aggression is also a cause . sparco has not been neutered yet.i have a big compound (can park up to 8 cars) , i dont let him out freely cos i stay in an area with alot of stray dogs that are really "kurap" looking and im scared he might get ticks and fleas when they mingle around.....he gets really worked up when he see female dogs passing by the house , and he cant do anything .I do take him out for walks .i did also consult my vet , which then refered me to a trainer ....and the only thing that they said is u have to come for up to 10 training session and might cost abt rm1000 .i really cant afford that , as im just a student currently .

so i really hope anyone of u can give me some advise or options for me to curb this problem ,as time is really running out for me . please help !!!

thank u .

Hai. How long have u had Sparco? Has he been like this since a puppy? I donno..i think he is probably deprived. Maybe from gallavanting with other outside dog or from mating. If so, de-sex will be the best solution as it will reduce these feeling/desire.

Dogs should know who is the master. From what u tell us, he thinks he is the leader here, telling you what to do. The RM 1K training that u mentioned is a 1 to 1 private classes. Puppy.com and pet n you offers group training that is less than RM 200 per dog/handler.

OB training might help with the aggressive behaviour...try it out

Your dog is now challenging you, training, well you have to confront it... in short one of you are going to get hurt. De-sexing the dog may or may not help, everyone assume it will. With mongrels one can never predict the temperament so you are actually fighting a lost battle. The easiest thing to do is give it out for adoption.... which a lot of forum members will be against or else put him down... whereby in this case I shall be put down for suggesting it.
So, your option is very limited. The female dog walking pass theory is not applicable unless they are on heat. I suggest you give him up for adoption.

1 yr old? certainly not too late to cure the problem. Have met a malinois bout 2 yrs old and is crazy and will simply bite anyone but with a good behavior correctal specialist the problem can be cured. Very alpha dog. I think you are not showing your dog that you are the alpha in the house not him. If you are really serious on curbing this problem firstly is you need time and patience. There is no short cut. And of cos there are a few accessories that you can use for this. I would not want to reveal further info on it. If you are serious then you can email me at acs_yen@h.o.t.m.a.i.l.c.o.m i'll guide you along slowly..

HI there , thanks alot for the advice . wel i have had sparco since he was 2 mths old . since a puppy he has been very protective of his food bowl . other wise no problem at all . very frendly with anyone also .quite playful and hyper active dog and a very good guard dog also . though he's a local breed , i'm very careful with his diet , vacination , vitamins and cleanliness. i do admit i have made alot of mistakes in the basics .i'm not willing to give him up for adoption as well .

please do give me some guidelines on the ob training where abouts , and how do i go about doing it . i do have to tell you that sparco has not socialized with other dogs since a pup , due to the fact that dogs around here are in really bad shape( stray kampung dogs) .

M glad that u r giving your dog a chance to improve. Putting him up for adoption, is not an ideal move. If u, who have him since 2 mths old cant handle him, what more a new comer.....

Ctc Acsyen, she will be able to help u. I think she knows a 'behavioural specialist' personally. Meanwhile, do consider taking him for socialising and OB training...I know how frustrating it is, to have a dog with behavioural problem......Frown...Only time, effort and patience can tell.....

u have an aggressive dog and I have a super timid dog who is afraid over anything....pee when he is scared/ excited and will hide in any hole he can find...run/shy away when approached by strangers..

Putting him up for adoption for my PLuto, meaning, putting him on a death row....I have been attending OB classes and socialised a lot...its almost a year now, he has improved lar...not much though...owner have to be sabar lah.

Re: [icedev] URGENT ---aggressive dog [In reply to] Can't Post

My guess is that he's trying to be alpha over you wz all the previous manja since puppy hood. When he growls, hold onto his collar firmly, give him a stern NO and stare him in the eyes until he avoid your eye contact. He might try to act as if he will attack but never let go of the collar and the eye contact. That is how dogs react to prove to others that they are alpha. Once you show your fear, he will take it that he's the alpha over you. And also do not try to TALK or REASON with him during the process as your tone of voice is a very good give away. A few stern NO is good enough.

Hei Bakamono,

Giving that stern look and with the eye contact...shows who is the alpha?...No wonder, Raja was telling me that Pluto was ready to attack (one time) when Pluto was giving him that look and did not blink at all..

U knwlah..yr god son.He kan kwai, kwai and blur lur.... like to give that stare (puzzle look) plus his wrinkle forehead and all...when he actually meant nothing....

Even michael, the mat salleh Shutzhund trainer, said Pluto is unpredictable and with temperament....all because of his look...poor thingUnsure..

Re: [icedev] URGENT ---aggressive dog [In reply to] Can't Post

never allow your dog to be on bed or furniture, this only make them to assume that they had the same status as the owner...

u definately need to make an effort to strengthen the bond between u and sparco...

start off by hand feeding him, this is a way to build trust to the owner.... dogs will not bite the hand which feeds them..

only let him get access to outdoor on leash, even in your own backyard....

during times when u need to hold on to him, don't juz grab his collar, this will only provoke him, place leash at handy places and make use of it...snap a leash on the collar is easier n safer for u to get him under control....

when u are not around, keep your dog indoor or in crate, do not let him has fun playing around the yard on his own... when you are back, bring him out for potty and then spend quality time feeding or playing with him, like throwing a ball for them to chase can make them happy...... this make him think that you are the source of fun n happiness in his life...n he will be anticipating your arrival home

n if u wanna punish your dog for misbehaviour, never hit them, even using a roll use newspaper... if u wan your dog to respect u, u have to respect them too

getting him neuter may n may not help with aggressive issue, but it definately help to curb his desire of going out n looking for mates...

if this didn't manage to improve, the last solution might be to use an electric collar...

Re: [myzanordin] URGENT ---aggressive dog [In reply to] Can't Post

That's why I pick him to be my son. He is not blur, he is SMART up there knowing that others will not bother abt him with his blur blur look. And when he decides to attack, the other party will not be ready and that will gv him the upper hand. Being unpredictable and wz temperament will be a strong point for him to defend himself outside but he knows better than to harm his own family that he is staying with. Therefore, u don't hv to worry abt him around the hse. If he's aggressive n cannot control himself, all your lovely kittens will be gone by now. He is fine as long as you hv him on leash outside as you'll never know when he'll be tempted to attack others. He'll only be aggresive when he is away from you and feels unsafe. Now u know why eventho he's my son, I hardly go near him n force my love on him bcoz he needs time to make sure that I'm harmless.

Re: [bakamono] URGENT ---aggressive dog [In reply to] Can't Post

precisely...god ma is so, so right. So far, till todate, he has never let himself be pat by anyone else except me and Marianne, eventho he has seen them many, many, times....I guess, he just careful..unlike the min. pin, overly friendly pulak....

But, now, he has improved a bit ...will accept treats already...even from Raja but never from someone he has not met before...I knw, if he being pushed too hard, he will retaliate...(just like a typical human man, dont like to be hit under the belt....)..will go beserk...

So Michael and Raja said, lots of praises and treats...cannot be too kasar or pushy...its not the way to handle him...

But u shld see him at home. When I call him and he didnt come and then I will just raise my voice, he will act like kelam kabut a bit like feeling guilty, cme straigt and sit in front of me...sooo sweet..

be very careful on not to injure yourself in this...have more patience with him but make sure that the cane is not far beyond your reach while you train him...this is to protect yourself and also to discipline him...i had seen a similar doggie like yours...what i can say is that it takes time.
