My 4 months GSD got Hip problem Can't Post

I feel really worry and sad because the doctor suspected my 4months GSD might be having symptoms of hip problem, i couldnt understand how can it be. My baby always will be jump while walking, i thought it might be normal for small puppies. Recently i brought him to clinic, and doctor found out that he is limping while walking. He told me that he might lack vitamins, and need to do x- ray, if the x-ray shows lack in bone, it need to be put for surgery, currently doctor advised us to give supplementary
tablets to make the bone stronger, and of course im aware that GSD should not put up weight and im controlling his food, but im worry about i might be losing the real structure for GSD, Can anyone advice me will the problem will effect when he grow up, can it be recover and back to normal GSD structure ? How can i bring him to normal ? Can anyone advice me, Im really worrying about my baby.... Plz help....Frown

Hi Saijana,

I totally feel for u, i was heartbroken when my GSD was told it has HD too & i cried for days!

Well apart from giving supplements (my girl is on Glucosamine+Chrondroitin tablets), u need to watch her not to fall down on slippery floors, esp marble flooring!.. Its not proven tat slippery floors causes HD, but it sure will worsen the condition of your furkid IF it already has HD...

I met up with a good fren recently who own 3 gorgeous Golden retrievers, when i shared with him my problem he said one of his GR had the same problem too when it was 4 mths old! He told me he changed the diet to Eaglepack Holistic (Gold-color packaging). And im seeing with my own eyes, his GR is perfectly fine now! The hind legs are perfectly straight & thick! Shocked I was shocked, really!

Apart from that, you can take ur kid for short walks to help it exercise the legs! Hope everything will be alrite for your kid! Hang in there ya!!

Hello Kales78!

Just hope we can merely share info & help each other in tis forum...

How's ur pup doing now? Yes, Synoquin is very good & also very expensive, the vet quoted me rm285 a bottle. He said my girl doesnt need to be on Synoquin yet... Still need to monitor her progress.. sigh, she jumps & zooms then falls down like a mad fella before i can stop her

Well i checked with my fren, the Eaglepack holistic gold is actualy for medium breed dogs but he's feeding it to his Goldens.. strange, i asked him too but he just said a breeder fren taught him so.. The purple one tat u saw is for Large/Giant Breed, the protein is 23% ,slightly lower than the EP holistic Gold..

My girl ah, i mix some fish oil (they sell them in pump bottles) in her food plus some chopped carrots & 2 spoons of canned food. Two-meals a day. I can't say her coat is nice, but it is soft! I hav asked advised from many frens; they said

1- For GSD coat to be nice & thick, keep it in air-condition room. The cold temperature will give them a lovely coat

2- Tar shampoo, esp good for black-coated dogs. Gives the dark coat a lustrous shine.

Hope tis helps! Cheers!

hi, thanks buddy for ur kind info, actually my baby is recovering and i can see the different in his style of walk.
i used to spent some time wif him playing and bring him walk for half an hour.
The sinoquin which i bought also RM 285 but its worth it. Anyway i think i will go for the Eaglepack Holistic for medium breed, just try a small pack 1st. is there any problem if i fed my GSD wif medium breed dog food?

No sweat!

Oh Yes, by the way, Olive oil is good for the coat, my trainer told me that before too!

Do you bring ur baby for any doggie gatherings? Mayb we can meet up & socialize our kids! Where r u staying?

I think feeding a medium breed dog food shouldnt hav any problem but note the protein is 1% higher not sure how significant is tat, mayb u can consult other forumers too.. Trying out a small pack is a good idea in case ur kid might not like the taste!

Re: [Kales78] My 4 months GSD got Hip problem [In reply to] Can't Post

icic! I'm in KL.. Laugh

I think the minute puppy enters ur household it shud be taught the basics:- SIT STAY DOWN

As for formal obedience training, i personally think about 4-5 mths shud b ok, my bailey started hers at 5mths. Its very testing to get a pup to pay attention & sit still... my goodness, lots of patience & time commitment required! Crazy Mayb after ur pup has graduated from obedience then u can bring ur pup to a professional trainer to have him assessed to see which training suits him best; Schutzund/Protection etc. Though i read that Protection training for a dog is very straining & kesian to the dog. Some trainer whack the dog to get it agitated or in other words, get it worked up... Pirate It really depends on what purpose u want your GSD to play.. Guard Dog or a member of the family. Guarding is really natural for them, its in their blood! My girl was already ferocious to strangers wen she was 4mths old!

Yes, the eaglepack large/giant breed is in purple color. But i recommend u go for Holistic as in doesnt contain Soy, Corn etc, u might want to read up on the Nutrition section

Cheers!

oh by the way, kales, i wanna ask your advice, does ur gsd bite a lot? What methods do u use to curb it? My girl sometimes doesnt like to be handled on certain parts like her hind legs etc, she will tend to mouth my hand! Mad She doesnt bite hard but she shows she clearly doesnt like it... Pirate

Do u hav any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe you can try contacting Dr.Phua Kia Yaw in Kuantan. He operated on my fren's rott a few months ago. According to my fren, he's the only vet in Malaysia who specialises in surgery. here's his contact.

Actually, this is just from my experience really, but when my dog accidentally chews on my hand, i scream, i make a big fuss outta it and he'll actually stop it..my dog's food drive is extremely high, so its actually very dangerous to walk around with a sausage in ur hand..ahaha...but since i've tried the method above mentioned by a dog trainer, it has worked..slowly, but surely and he's now very gentle when taking food from my hand...after a lot of bloodshed..LOL..my GSD may have HD too..went to the vet the other day, she stretched my GSD's hind legs straight backwards..and my dog did show discomfort on the right hand side...but when i did it agian at home...he didnt even bother..i'm worried..and that glucosamine supplement cost RM285...any cheaper option ah??btw..my gsd is about..10 months old only...

Hey eejoe,

I was recommended this product ( I can't recall the name at the moment), which its chondroitin and glucosamine content is higher than Synoquin. Costs a fraction of the price of Synoquin. But I'm not sure how it'll work for your pup. Maybe you can go do an x-ray to have a piece of mind and then u can also decide which joint supplements to use for ur pup?

Hi eejoe,

Sure. Here's the product : www.petnaturals.com/vitamins_supplements/hip-joint-support-dogs-extra.php

For some reason the one available in Msia has a different packaging (it's purple here)

Retails for about RM 85 for a bottle of 60

Hope this helps Smile

Re: [leeeejoe] My 4 months GSD got Hip problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Joe!

My GSD was on Petnaturals too, then the breeder gav me a bottle of Synoquin Growth to try. I saw that Synoquin Growth has only 125mg of Glucosamine Hcl while Petnaturals has 500mg! I'm still monitoring my kid's progress, i'm really not sure which is better at tis point... Unsure I do think Synoquin's price is killer man Pirate

I got my bottle of Petnatural's Glucosamine+ Chrondroitin from Pet Safari & price is quite ok!

How's ur kid doin?

I think anything compared to Synoquin the price is ok hahah Tongue

One thing though which I'm not sure is that on Synoquin, the label reaads:
Glucosamine HCL 99%
Chondroitin sulphate 95%
N Acetyl D Glucosamine
What do the % values mean? Percentage purity? Absorption efficiency?
If its absorption or purity then what is it in the other brands which do not hv the %values?
I'm quite sure not 100% of the 750 mg of glucosamine in Petnaturals is absorbed into the dog....but then how many % is???????????

PRECISELY!! Crazy i've been wondering bout the % thingy.. It says in the website (99% pure) ??

The bottle of Petnaturals i got from my vet was 750mg (60tablets) but the ones selling in Pet safari is 500mg (120 tablets)..

A good friend of mine discovered human supplement - (Zinc, Magnesium, & somethin) for kids, said to work better than Glucosamine. He said it works like a charm for his Rotties, have u heard of such a thing?

Re: [koruchann] My 4 months GSD got Hip problem [In reply to] Can't Post

Is the 500mg one extra strength as well??

Nvr heard of that..but I know you can use human supplements if you want...
Maybe his rotts joint/bone problem is due to a lack of those vitamins??

The next questions is...if it's 99% pure, do the dogs absorb all 99%? ( I really dont think so)

Re: [leeeejoe] My 4 months GSD got Hip problem [In reply to] Can't Post

i would like to share my experience with 2 of my 6 mths old GSD pups:

one morning i found that she was limping, as if it hurts when walking on that leg (previously both of them seem to limp a little once in awhile especially when lying down for a long time), but since i had to go to work i left them, thinking if its still like that in afternoon, i'd take her to the vet.

to my horror when i got back that leg seemed to be totally out of alignment (sorta like this | / , if u know wat i mean).

i immediately took them to the vet who found that the leg seems to be almost out of the socket! however, the vet did not seem too keen on surgery as apparently it costs alot and its not even 100%.

so she jus prescribed a pain killer jab on that leg and recommended synoquin (1 pill everyday).

i have to say that the change was almost instantaneous - about 2-3 days later, the leg went back into the socket (think | | now, haha), and she has not been limping ever since.

to date i've been giving synoquin to both my GSD pups daily and i notice that they do not limp anymore even after lying down for a long time.

to cut things short? synoquin: rm280/bottle. pups without hip problems: priceless.

i'm sold.
