Dear Kaxen,

Would advice you to look out for Brreeders who have chow-chows as you can have a look at the puppies parents as an indication of how they may turn up. All chow-chow puppies are cute-like teddy bears when young but as they grow older they tend to be closer to one member of the family from my experience. In respect of puppies, think you will have to look at puppies personally as regards colour and sex. Males will turn out to be awesome especially with the mane. Assume that you have done your reading on Chows especially grooming as it is a double coated breed. details of standard you can find on Chow-chow sites. When you visit the breeder check that puppy should be clean with alert eyes. no discharge from nose and eyes. Body should be sturdy and hind legs are straight.Must have scissors bite and not undersho or overshot. This is a characteristic of the chow as they walk with short stilted action. Tongue must be blue black and gums and flews preferbly black.Good pups will lhave a little bit of the scowling look and this is exaggerated when they grow older. If choosing male, make sure that dog has 2 testicles. Colours -your preference but the Reds or fawns will usually look the most impressive when mature. Black- sometimes looks like a black bear as can see the scowl from far. cream sometimes will have apricot tinge on ears. choice is yours. Earsmust be erect carried slightly forward. Muzzle must not be snipy.

Most importantly, make sure the pup is socialised when young and is used to people and being touched and groomed They tend to be independent to the point of sometimes being strong willed or stubborn and are unlike your German shepherds or border collies who will do things on command. But they are faithful and handsome dogs if time is devoted to them . Hope this helps and good luck!
