obedience class training or train at home? Can't Post

Is it really necessary for my dog to go for obedience classes to get proper training or can i just train him at home. If i have the time i would love to bring him for these classes but due to time restrain, i have no choice but to train him at home. I have a 5 months old, male golden retriever.

Tricks that he manage to do:

1. sit (he knows this command when he's just 4weeks old :) )

2. stay

3. down (sometimes)

4. hand/paw

5. after i pour food into his tray, he'll wait for my command before he eats. Same goes to when i open his crate he'll wait for me to say the magic word "ok" before he comes out.

6. did'nt really teach him to heel, but if i take him out for a walk, most of the time he'll just walk by my side.

GR is very obedient. Beside the usual things they teach at the classes, u will hv the advantages to hv him expose n socialize wz other doggies or for future Agility n Flyball classes. Since he's young now n u don't hv much time for it now, u can consider the idea at a later stage. Sure yr GR will lov it as it opens up a whole new world of meeting with others n new activities to participate in. It's never too late as I started off OB for my Lab after she's one year old.

Well actually, it's entirely up to you. If you know what & how to teach your dog without going to school, to me, that's good enough! Training at home & training at OB school is just the same except that if you have your training at schools, you will get to learn the correct methods to train your dog & your dog will also get to socialize with other dogs & humans. Socializing is very important. No point having a very obedient & well trained dog when its behavior is so teruk.

For me, I have been training my Golden since 3 mths of age & now she's just turned two & already in Intermediate level. From my experience, training at school is a lot more fun than training at home becoz 1st of all, you & your dog get to meet other new people & dogs there & you will always be motivated to train your dog.

For me last time, when my Amber was in puppy class, I always felt competitive & always liked my dog to be the best in the class. Training at school really kept me motivated everyday & it always made me want to train my Amber. To me, that's the only thing about training at OB schools lah like Puppy.com, MKA or PetnYou. I train my dogs at Puppy.com.

I did not send my boy to obedience class...1 main reason is time too...I do not have much time as I'm working.

But hey, ur gr knows a lot edi...Congrats!! My pup is Intelligient but not obedience. But I think all pups r playful.

waaa... hiro, ur GR is really impressive. my 9 month old maltese can't do half of those things properly (means sometimes can, sometimes cannot) and he's been to and passed obedience class, plus we continue training at home. lol.

here's my take on obedience class: like d trainer said, obedience class is more to train d trainer (us!), than to train d dog! cos if we only train d dog during class n don't carry on at home, there is no use as dogs learn through continual repetitions. so, if u already know how to train d dog (which u do), then d only advantage of classes is for d dog to socialise - which is also important so ur dog wun be like 'katak bawah tempurung' when he meets oth ppl/dogs. 'katak bawah tempurung' dogs tend to misbehave in public cos not used to seeing oth ppl/dogs.

having said that, if u bring ur dog for walks often, hv play session wif other dogs, and regularly have all sorts of visitors in ur home etc, then ur dog will also get d 'socialisation' effect. so it all depends on how comfortable u feel abt ur ability to train ur GR and if ur GR has enough opp to socialise w/o class. if yes to both questions, den i think can do without lor.

last note, training d dog is a lifelong process. the learning never stops. Smile oh yes, d oth advantage of class: it forces ppl who r too lazy to do it themselves alone at home - those ppl who need someone to push them. hahaha.

that's so true.... competition can really keep u motivated.... or else, the handler will also feel lazy to keep up with the training...
