yup yup...me agree with supermutts on the food allergy. Donnu why a lot of the dogs here are very prone to food allergy. 
regarding fur and kid's asthma....well if u ask me, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING can cause a kid to get asthma attack lah. Dust, Pollen, Hair, certain food, sand, bla bla bla.....the list goes on (mostly air-borne allergens). Aiya adults also can kena what. Just not so severe only. And that's called SINUS problem. U sneeze like there's no tomorrow for one minute and the next minute u're perfectly fine. Same theory lah tu.
First ppl have to understand what in the world asthma attack is all about and not just the difficulty in breathing side of the story. Ppl have to understand what causes restriction of the airways and how to prevent them. Asthma is a form of allergy attack. Unlike skin allergies which usually results in itchiness and rashes, asthma is a form of allergy that attacks the airway tracts causing it to become inflammed, swollen and hence narrowing down the tract at the same time produces even more mucus. All causing breathing difficulty. The inhaler prescribed by doctors are usually anti-histamine based used to surpressed ur immunity so that ur body will not attack itself and hence relieving the person of the asthma by opening up the airway tract and surpressing mucus production.
Asthma attacks is extremely prone in children simply because they have a more sensitive airway tracts. So most kids will grow out of it. I was one of them. When I was younger, I had asthma attacks. The asthma attack usually happens when I'm playing sports. Running in the field and all that. It wasnt my dog. We had a spitz and it was an indoor dog. Went to so many doctors and specialists and finally a paeditrician (actually a family friend who just got back from the UK after practising there for like 10 years) isssued me a letter which kept me off the field for 2 years. I was in Std 1 then. He even told my family, most kids are like that and eventually almost all of them grow out of it. But how old will they stop having all this attacks differs with individual. It depends on the child's immunity. I started playing sports again in Std 4 and I was perfectly fine from that. No more coughing, no more wheezing, no more phlegm and I was off the inhaler since Std 3. For that 2-3 years that I can remember, we had to put Snowy outdoor and my nanny would clean the whole house with dettol. Its a precaution asked to be taken by the doctor to eliminate all allergens. But I used to sneak Snowy in and hide her in my room. 
I remember in one of my lectures last time, the prof did mention something like "If a kid has an asthma attack, it's most probably an allergy reaction triggered by an air-source allergen; If an adult of 30years old has asthma, they better get themselves check for auto-immune diseases" Never really made much sense back then when I was still a sophomore in uni.
Oh well, I know it can be difficult trying to explain that to some ppl. I've tried and gave up. So I don even bother anymore. easy way out, I dont welcome asthmatic and asthma prone walking subjects in my house. Enter my house at ur own risk. I always make it a known fact to everyone who wants to come to my house that I have to TWO SUPER-FUR-SHEDDING dogs IN the house who happens to own all the chairs, rugs, mats, beds and sofas in the house and a couple of slaves who are too blardy lazy to vacuum every week what more everyday. The only reason why my dogs are never allowed in my grandma's house is because, there's too many old fragile antiques lying around and my 2 crazy hantu might go berserk and banged and smashed everything into pieces in a blink of an eye and never because "aiya......FUR EVERYWHERE"
