Tracheal collapse Can't Post

Hi all,

Would like to get some info and advise from the dog owners here about Tracheal collapse. Is this disease can only be seen in small breed dogs? Does anyone has experience in dealing with this problem with their dogs? Please kindly share your experiences with me. Thank you.

Re: [lovemybibi] Tracheal collapse [In reply to] Can't Post

Tracheal collapse is seen a lot in small breed dogs. It is also known "reverse sneeze". It is not a serious condition, and is rarely life threatening. It happens because the trachea (or windpipe) begins acting like a vacuum when he is moving air too fast. Which is why it happens when he gets excited. There is a surgical procedure that can be done, but it is expensive!!

A simple test you can do at home for tracheal collapse massaging the trachea near the dog's chest for a minute or two. Dogs with this problem go into a coughing spell as soon as you finish the massage. What happens is the soft palate in the back of the throat can get caught up in the entrance to the trachea when they inhale too much air..ie when they are excited. Either you can let him continue 'honking' or you can try expressing air out of his lungs by pushing gently...i repeat gently but firmly on his chest to force more air out so it dislodges.
