oh ya...he is very playful when young...but now 1 year old already...has been calm down a lot...but still playful...it is just the character of GR. Since GR is also playful..we utilise that to get him to perform some tricks.

I haven't heard of GR doing that but I do know that there are dogs that catch rats and and kill cats especially little kittens as big dog has more strength.

My GR not bordered with any cats or even birds. They are free to come and roam in my garden or even share his food or drink. He is not bordered.

I doubt they intend to kill....they probably just want to play. They won't know the extent of their strength so...they just might bite a little bit too hard, paw a little bit too rough.... I used to find a dead rat one morning and two very happy grinning dogs looking up at my OH-MO-GAWD's face. The poor chap was either used for target practice or passed around liked rugby or kicked around liked football. And for mercy sake, I just pray the rat was dead from heart attack before the game starts. Pretty sadistic yeah....!!! Kookee the lab ok with cats initially but once she saw her sister, Reyyee the mongrel going after neighbourhood's kitties, she follows suit. Talk about bad role model.

Yeah, I believe so. But I think they sometimes get rather rough especially when excited. Unsure Recently my neightbor's daughther have a new pup about 2 months old. She introduce her pup to my GR and my GR got so excited and they started to play. But I think my GR got a bit too rough, the new pup give a loud cry and now the pup got so scared of him. See him from far, try to run and hide Frown.

Trained him to be gentle when taking food from a human hand but I don't know how to teach him to be gentle when playing with smally pups and little children. Any idea how?

hahahaha... i can imagine the scene of 2 very happy grinning dogs looking at their shocked owner Shocked. the thing is its really difficult to be angry with them cos they seem so innocent Angelic.

my westie still loves to play with cats but the cats tend to not welcome him much. i can see him happily wagging his tail even when d cat looked so fierce and was obviously getting ready to attack him. when i go and bring him away from d cat, he looks so disappointed Unsure. i guess he doesn't understand why cats here refused to play with him since cats in Aust are ok to play.

I have seen benji's photos, he is very cute and handsome. I do have a golden retriever. His name is Denver. Mine one also hyperactive and playful when got frens come to my house. He will carry his toys over and show to my frens. When my frens touch him, he will be very happy and wagging his tails non-stop. When I intend to feed him snacks, I will hold back the snacks until he takes over softly. Of course, when he plays with his fren, shih tzu, he is very rough also.

Hi HiFrown

I have a 12 weeks old GR too. His name is Caesar. I was thinking of enrolling him to OB Class come this October too. Maybe we can meet up and let our furkids make friends??

Oh! if your dog is hyperactive, then utilise his energy by training him tricks. Benji was hyperactive as well and we managed to train him. It was once we are in the house and he stayed outside at the car porch area. He start barking at us to let him into the house. But we utilise it by teaching him to speak. so when he bark, we said speak and show fingers. So now he knows how to count 1 to 3. When I show 1 finger and say speak, he will bark once. If I show 2 and say speak, he will bark twice. So try to teach them a lot cause GR are very smart. They are fast learner. Of course you need to give treats or praise them.

good. start to train them when they are young. You will fee easy to train them when they are still puppy. Cause they are innocent and like to explore. They also scared and tend to be with the owner. So to train them sit, heal etc are easy. However, when they grow bigger, they are brave enough and they start to not listen to you or outsmart you. So you have to continue to train them. Make sure you pass the message to them that you are the boss and not him.

I believe you shouldn't have any problem on taking of GR since you have so many dogs. The basic is to clean their ear, cut nails, comb and check their body once a week. Just shower them once a week is sufficient. Nothing much compare to other dog. The only thing I notice compare to my previous other dogs is their ear need to be cleaned regularly.

1st of all, did your GR expose to mosquito ? The red spot may also due to mosquito bite.

Some GR does have allergy to chicken. so you should try the Lamb & Rice. Just constantly check to see whether he/she still have the skin problem.

Re: [ryanchoo] Golden Retriever [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi! Ryan.

I've two GR too; Rocky (10months) and Fenix(6months) Wink

i saw the pics posted and notice you keep your furkids in cage. If you let them pee inside cage, my advise is you wash their cage everyday and keep it dry before you let your furkids in.

Maybe you can put mat (those red or blue colour we normally use on bathroom) on the floor of the cage, then you just have the wash the mat daily (better to keep 2 sets). This is what i do when Rocky develop red spot during his first two months at home.

As for Fenix, i noticed she has red spot near her pee area during the first few weeks she join us so i wipe her tummy and affected area with slightly damp clean cloth and apply pet powder every nite before sleep time. After a week those red spots are gone. Now she's taller so her pee doesnt contact her tummy anymore and i've stop cleaning her every nite.

Hope this works on Mimi and Bobby too.
