Want to get a protection dog Can't Post

Hi everybody,

I posted the message below on the Schutzhund forum but thought I might as well put it here as well. Would really appreciate if some people could give me some advice:

"I'd like to get a dog to protect my house and my family and I hope some of you can give me advice on where I can find one. I know that most of you here are professionals so you'd want a bit more detail so here it is:

1. I'd like a dog strong enough to deter the vast majority of potential burglars and even if a bunch of guys decided to come into the house compound, the dog could at least slow them down a little bit for us to call for help.

2. I also would like the dog to escort the female members of my family when they go for a jog. There are too many stories these days of people getting snatched off the street.

3. I dont expect the dog to be schutzhund trained and I dont think i'll participate in the sport in the future.

4. I've got a big family living with me, and have two toddlers (3 and 2 year olds) so the dog should be good with them.

5. I've got a fairly large yard in my house, so i dont think the dog will feel cooped up.

6. I've never owned a dog before, but am eager to get one. I would be happy to take the dog out for a run once in the morning and once in the evening and would also be happy to do some simple training (e.g. obedience, simple protection) on the weekends.

I've been told that the kind of dog that fits the bill would be a strong, healthy, territorial, self-confident dog that can bond really well and love my family. I'd go for any breed of dog, but I've also heard that in Malaysia a German Shepherd would be the most likely candidate. I'd also like a young adult.

If any of you is interesting in selling me such a dog or could tell me where I could get one please let me know on this forum, email at ahmisk or call me at 012 299 9832.

Thanks a lot. "

Re: [ahmisk] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi brother,

Normally when come to considering a guard dog peoples in our country tends to go for German Sherpherd, Rottweiler, Dobberman, Malinois and some other large breed which have been proven suitable in the job mentioned. But without training, all the dogs can only bark, play and eat...

Basic OB is a must to all kind of breed, that will takes time and effort. Most of the people keep fierce looking dog to warn starngers from approching our property, but in actual whether the dogs can play their role as a guarddog... again this is unknown. We can actually see some breed mentioned barking at the strangers, but when you walk near to them, they are as tame as a rabbit..., you cannot see any aggression on it.

The worst part is, some owner keep dogs is basing on what they WANT, but not what they NEED. Example: Someone might be seeing their friend keep Rottweiler, and feel that this breed is good as a guard dog, then he follow... he want it or may be someone saw their friend keep American Pit Bull, he feel that this breed is brave and with a very fierce looking, then he follow...he WANT it.

Certain breeds are not suitable for a beginner, children, or elderly. Certain breed are not suitable for someone who is very busy because these breed needs attention, maintenance, and exercise. Certain breed are not suitable for those who has beautiful lanscape (these breed might pull and dig out all the plants) and etc...

My conclusion is; the right breed you are looking at should be fierce looking, brave, easy to the elderly and children, low maintenance, and maybe powerful enought to bring down an intruder.

You may consider:

1.) GSD

2.) Malinois

3.) Bull Mastiff

4.) American Staffordshire Terrier

Hope this could help... cheer........

Re: [Kevin Chuan] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello brother,

Thank you very much for your advice. It's most appreciated. FYI I got a GSD puppy a couple of months ago. He's 6 months old now. He's alert, has a strong drive and is pretty affectionate with us. We're really happy with him. I got him from Peter Kong, a schutzhund trainer and breeder based in Johor.

Here's a picture taken when he was about 5 months old.

Thanks.

Hey I just came across your post & I understand that you're looking for a steady, quite aggressive & good guard dog. Well, you'll can find one that does not require you to pay at all & almost everyday outside your home you'll find some that are pretty aggressive especially the ones outside their owner's home. They are good guard dogs too. They will lunge forward & show they aggressiveness by showing their teeth. They're called stray aka pariah dogs. How about those??? You'll be surprise that pariah dogs are much more aggressive than German Shepperds...Some GS can be quite docile, gentle & some can be quite timid.

Hi amber-mae,
The strays/pariahs make fantastic watch dogs..as in they bark alot and show aggression but they will not bite. If they do,it is out of fear which is not a true guard dog. If push comes to shove, they will run.
Now,I am not saying pariahs are no good...I'm just saying that they are for a different purpose.
As for GSD,docile and gentle when they are not provoked are how they should be Smile however timid GSD's are the ones poorly bred.

Re: [RealityDreamer] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Ya lah true. Eh, but some stray/pariah dogs are abit crack you know! Some do really come forward & bite.

Eh, even if he gets a good breed German Shepperd, definitely it will not go forward and attack robbers or etc without any proper schutzhund training. In the beginning when you first get whatever dog you get, ofcourse it doesn't know anything about attacking. At my training area, I've seen some crack GSDs & mongrels be4. Both breeds almost have the same characteristics. Most of the time, the dominant male dog will go forward & attack any other male dogs it doesn't like. But so far non attack owner nor trainer nor other people. But you may find one or two that attack their own owners, etc, etc.

The dog doesn't know anything about protecting & attacking at the correct time. It cannot just simply attack anybody it likes. This usually comes from crack dogs, pedigrees or non-pedigrees. Some have their own natural instinct to attack but some don't. Some can be really friendly & timid towards other dogs & people. So if he wants to have a dog that will protect his home, his family, his whatever property he owns, he needs to train it to become a real good guard dog. Anyway, everything starts from OB training first. It must know the basic even be4 he learns schutzhund stuff. Am I right?

And guard dog doesn't mean just leaving it in the porch with no human, dog interaction, whatsoever! People always think, guard dogs are suppose to be left in the porch to take care of the home. But that's just making the dog to become crack & useless actually. So actually any dog can be a gurad dog, it can be GSD, Malinois, Dobermann, Labradors or even a MinPin. But MinPins are not really suitable altho some can be quite ferocious but just one kick, it'll go flying!

So everything starts with a good OB & schutzhund training. That's why I said, why get an expensive dog when a mongrel/pariah will do the job. But ofcourse, training is the answer to a good guard dog! And both GSD & pariah dogs are not that easy to train...

Re: [RealityDreamer] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello, :)

Well sorry to disappoint you but the picture was taken like a couple of months ago so he's still light coloured, actually. Just like when you saw him at azman's. Yesterday I took him to Pet N You training. He couldnt sit still. He kept on wanting to investigate the other dogs. Andrew (one of the trainers- he's got a very big, beautiful male malinois called Champ) said that my zizou has got a good drive. Andrew is thinking of getting a black shepherd from peter. Anyway when i take him for training classes like that i really appreciate my dog more because i realise how nice his personality is, but at the same time, how energetic or drivey he is. Many of the dogs there are much less drivey than zizou. Andrew's Champ is also fantastic. He's very friendly- he came over to investigate my sister, and after he got to know her he's so manja he just stood there and leaned on my sister's leg. Which is not that good, really, since the dog must be like 100 pounds. But he's so nice. :)

Anyway how's your shepherd? :)

Re: [Amber.Faith] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Careful yea...schutzhund is not protection training. It *can* be a stepping stone for protection but is not real protection. However some dogs who are trained in schutzund can do protection.

"This usually comes from crack dogs, pedigrees or non-pedigrees." Agreed..!! ( I like ur term..."crack"...funny la u lol)

Part of schutzhund is OB Smile everyone concentrates on the protection and forget that in order to be schH titled u need to be able to do tracking and obedience as well.

Dog going fwd to simply bite...that is lack of control.Fault on the handler's part, not the dog. Most dogs,if they are unprovoked, should not have a "instinct" to bite. If unprovoked and they do bite,it is out of fear(for the average dogs).

Well,in some areas...dogs that just bark can't do the job. It's not just training..training I think, shows the dogs potential but if the dog has weak nerves(he's a scaredy cat),there is only so much training can do.

Hey u,

U've met Andrew & Champ, good pair they are Smile Champ is a real sweetheart...! He does that alot...u can take the big ol' boy home.
Hehe..it is good that u realize what u hv in ur hands. He's a nice puppy. What colour is his mother btw? Not very often I see a sable pup frm peter. lol.Hope he gets darker. With sables,it's interesting coz they change shades as the grow,or even different times of the yr. How's his training coming along? It's good to hear u bringing him out. I did not know u visit SJ area. I was also contemplating to go to Pet N U with Axel for some fun...but then better not since I have a test coming up.

Well,Axel's doing ok..slow improvement. That's all I can say for the moment..A mistake frm me,and its 2 steps backwards.Pirate

Well, it all depends on this fella whether he wants a well trained protection dog or just a dog who just barks & look fierce. It's up to him...

Sorry that i took a while to reply. I went to Pet N You training again yesterday. Had a hard time controlling him. He was bored, i suppose, I should bring his ball the next time. Hopefully he'll be more focused.

I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. You hang out with great trainers after all. I suppose they can be a brutal at times, though, if they want to comment on your training. But axel looks great (to my untrained eye). Smile

I havent a clue what his mother looks like (i know its bad not to see both parents before buying, but i just put my trust in azman and peter). Smile

Re: [ahmisk] Want to get a protection dog [In reply to] Can't Post

Pardon me if I may add my thoughts to this thread.

As you said that you have never owned a dog before, your may be disappointed with your expectation. Normally a real guard Dog is selected from the best of the liters that show steely courage. Maybe you may not be able to handle it as a first dog owner.

You dog will not be able to protect you in real life, (For that you must get a body guards-joking nia.Sly) Well prepared robbers will usually be able to kill your dog. As happen many time in storehouse robbery, reported in our newspaper, even though the guard dog is from professional security companies.

Having say that I think you have a lovely dog and yes, the GSD have good territory instinct and will bark if unknown peoples comes near your fences. This will certainly act as a deterrent to would be intruders. Good Luck and enjoyed your dog.

And by the way I have 2 GR. Sky and Rainbow. Not good guard dogs as GSD. But nevertheless good loving companions for me.

Thai is my thoughts & I appreciated yours.
