Hey Wan. Well if you want your dog to be confident with other dogs, all you just have to do is to be patient. Bring him out regularly to meet other dogs around him. If he starts his fear biting or what so ever, tell him it's okay and always say the word 'friend'. Pat the other dog, then let your dog sniff noses with it, if he starts growling, just do it again, tell him it's okay and let them sniff noses again and say 'friend'. Just keep on doing this with other dogs...He'll be fine soon. that's how I did it for my Dalmatian, she was a very timid dog, but now she likes to play with all the dogs she meet at the training center especially Goldens!

Giving care is like a 'Boomerang'

When you give it out freely, it always comes back to you

Remember that...

Re: [Amanda85] HELP!!! MY DOG IS ALWAYS DEPRESSED WHEN I TRAIN HER!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmm.. I really have no idea about it. Cos when I bought him from petshop he is just 6 weeks old.

Later on I manage to track who is his breeder and went to visit his parents as well.

I dun think a puppy 6 weeks old has any bad experience as im sure they will be protected.

What would you guess would have happened to her?

Actually this also came across my mind, cos last time when my friend bring her chow to visit i would assume a puppy at 3 - 4 months old will be curious and not be afraid but he was totally afraid and trying to avoid that chow2.

however to stranger(human) he got no problem at all in fact too friendly. Just to dogs he got such problem. I believe that he really need many more times of socialise to let him overcome it. Not easy I believe.

So at times thinking of going for dog gathering I will feel rather not go because looking at him stress we all also dun enjoy it. Now I start to invite people with dog to bring their dog to visit whiskey at my house instead. one at a time.

Re: [PSY] HELP!!! MY DOG IS ALWAYS DEPRESSED WHEN I TRAIN HER!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi PSY, I was just looking at my daughter's post but I am replying to you. What is your telephone number and Mr Paul Chan's number? (My personal email is petproj@streamyx.com) is you don't want to announce it here.

My daughter mentioned you the other day. Maybe she's afraid to call.

We see Li Ping every week but there's always no time cos she's busy training her class and we are busy training our two dogs. Oh by the way, sorry, am I confusing you?

Amber-Mae and Faith are our two dogs and My daughter and I use the same user name to sign in (mistake there but nevermind, too late to change). She goes in as amber_mae and I go in as Ambermae. Ha ha.

I just read LiPing's advise and I have watched her goldens perform. They are Pretty Good actually. I also have a dalmation called Faith and she has no problems in all her commands including Recall where she runs and jumps on me. (I am the handler for Faith, while Melissa is the handler for Amber). However, Faith has a different set of problems. She's too fixated on Amber. She's constantly looking in the direction of Amber during classes and is not paying attention to anything in her class, not even her classmates. But Faith is also a fast learner and she has drive, meaning she's happy, she looks at you when commanded - only after 10 minutes, she's GOT to be beside Amber or she'll start whining and crying and pulling on her leash to get out of class and be next to her best frriend/sister. Sigh.

But I'd say at this time in the training, Faith is faring better than Amber because I hardly train her. Don't have the time. Like Amber, Faith also picks up a command in 5 minutes.

As for Amber, Li Ping's advise on suddenly stopping when heeling then calling Amber and running backwards might actually work. Will try it.

Mr Paul Chan might have some ideas for alternative training for Amber. If she hates it so much, I want to try something else. Agility is a possibility but I am looking for something else as well.

Thanks,
Helena

Re: [wan] HELP!!! MY DOG IS ALWAYS DEPRESSED WHEN I TRAIN HER!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Wan,
This post is for you. First of all, I am amber_mae's mother (also signing in as ambermae). Sorry, confusing I know but we made a mistake in choosing the same username.

The reason I am replying is to correct the information that Amanda85 may have given you. Please don't listen to her. She seems to be a know-all who goes around advising everybody about everything but in truth, has no knowledge or experience in what she is talking about. An example is Training Method. She is advising me on how to train my dog and making judgements that my training method is wrong when (a) she herself has not trained a dog in her life, and (b) she has not met my dog and seen me training her. It's amazing that her level of expertise is so high, she can make judgements without even seeing the dog. At least Hunter's post is valid advise. That is a real qualified trainer we meet every week and she persoanlly knows my dog Amber-Mae.

So here are some facts you should know before listening to Amanda85:

1. You can't enter a Championship Obediance Trail at any level without first taking formal lessons. Even if you think your dog is smart and can perform the 6 basic commands, he must know the routine. There is a set routine that follows every command. There is a set way the Handler must walk. There is a set time to Give your command. Nothing is chinchai bochai. For example, do you know that the Trainer/examiner must que you? When he yells "About Turn", what must you do? Just simply turn? What is the command you give your dog when you are about to do the Recall? You only learn all this in formal classes. (I won't tell you the answers, you must find out for yourself). Therefore, you must enrol in a training class to learn the correct technique. And yes, if you pass, you get a medal and a cert, like my Amber.

2. Socialising means taking your dog out to meet both people and animals. And my daughter is right. Use the 'friend' technique. Expose your dog to the world. Don't hide it in the house. I have personally seen a puppy improve from a terrified dog to one that comes to class nowadays with its tail wagging. 10 weeks ago, that GSD puppy in my class was whimpering and whining with its tail between its legs. Today, its a different dog. A dog that is not socialised from young will wind up being aggressive to other dogs, or worse, to both animals and humans.

3. You can't enrol a puppy for Agility Class. If I am not mistaken, you mentioned your beagle is a puppy? Agility is only for dogs above 9mths or better, 1 year because their bones would have formed by this time. Anytime before this, don't do harsh jumping, hard running etc or you might maim your dog.
