Hi Wan, This post is for you. First of all, I am amber_mae's mother (also signing in as ambermae). Sorry, confusing I know but we made a mistake in choosing the same username. The reason I am replying is to correct the information that Amanda85 may have given you. Please don't listen to her. She seems to be a know-all who goes around advising everybody about everything but in truth, has no knowledge or experience in what she is talking about. An example is Training Method. She is advising me on how to train my dog and making judgements that my training method is wrong when (a) she herself has not trained a dog in her life, and (b) she has not met my dog and seen me training her. It's amazing that her level of expertise is so high, she can make judgements without even seeing the dog. At least Hunter's post is valid advise. That is a real qualified trainer we meet every week and she persoanlly knows my dog Amber-Mae. So here are some facts you should know before listening to Amanda85: 1. You can't enter a Championship Obediance Trail at any level without first taking formal lessons. Even if you think your dog is smart and can perform the 6 basic commands, he must know the routine. There is a set routine that follows every command. There is a set way the Handler must walk. There is a set time to Give your command. Nothing is chinchai bochai. For example, do you know that the Trainer/examiner must que you? When he yells "About Turn", what must you do? Just simply turn? What is the command you give your dog when you are about to do the Recall? You only learn all this in formal classes. (I won't tell you the answers, you must find out for yourself). Therefore, you must enrol in a training class to learn the correct technique. And yes, if you pass, you get a medal and a cert, like my Amber. 2. Socialising means taking your dog out to meet both people and animals. And my daughter is right. Use the 'friend' technique. Expose your dog to the world. Don't hide it in the house. I have personally seen a puppy improve from a terrified dog to one that comes to class nowadays with its tail wagging. 10 weeks ago, that GSD puppy in my class was whimpering and whining with its tail between its legs. Today, its a different dog. A dog that is not socialised from young will wind up being aggressive to other dogs, or worse, to both animals and humans. 3. You can't enrol a puppy for Agility Class. If I am not mistaken, you mentioned your beagle is a puppy? Agility is only for dogs above 9mths or better, 1 year because their bones would have formed by this time. Anytime before this, don't do harsh jumping, hard running etc or you might maim your dog.
