Against all petshops! Can't Post

Hi all, i strongly against petshops in Malaysia which are selling cats and dogs. Firstly, these poor animals are to live in a small cage everyday until some lucky owner comes by and secondly i'm not sure if those petshop's owner is familiar with dogs and cats or they're just making profits for themsleves. Also, those who think of buying dog to improve their feng shui and luck is making a big mistake Frown I really hope people won't take pet as an ornament and discard he/she in any way later. Buying a dog/cat is exactly like adopting a new child. Please do consider about their feelilngs.Lastly, I think pets should be breed and sell from a registered kennel not from a petshop.

Yes. Those who wish to purchase puppy should get it directly from the breeder, a reputable kennel and not from puppy mills.

Alrite, perhaps like you said. Not ALL petshops are mishandling the animals. But I read an article from the STAR in this forum about the death of a poodle at a petshop Unsure This is very depressing to all dog lovers. I still prefer a registered breeder (not jusy any breeder) than going to the petshop. Its just so sad to see those animals in cages and they're up for display everyday. Loving animals means to provide a comfortable and safe shelter for them and to ensure that their needs are always fulfilled (eg. well fed, daily exercise, playing, etc). Almost every country in Europe today banned having petshops (only small animals are allow to be purchased). Dogs and cats can only be purchased from a government registered breeder. Frown

yeah yeah in uk, you seldom see pet shops alike msian ones. but the best of all is.. you get to see the parents of the pups, to look at their temperament, their health etc etc.. from breeders. last time when I bought Popeye for jes 1-2wks, the doctor told me he got distemper disease. you know how much in total i spent for him.. when in the end, it is jes some flu and etc bcos his vaccination is not completed?!!!!!! i mean, if you get to look at the pups parents, at least you have the base knowledge about the dog you're buying.. not jes bcos it's 'cutee'. In pet shops, you go in.. you see whether they're cute or not.. then you buy. don't you think it's too risky?

Yes khyeying, you're right. Nowadays, some petshops are very commercialize and we can't be 100% sure that those owners are looking after the puppies well being.

Totally agree. Y don't they adopt a pet from SPCA instead.
There are so many homeless dogs out there which you can get for next to nothing but ppl are still willing to fork out a small fortune to buy a 'pedigree' dog... sigh... love needs no pedigree you know.

Not ALL petshops are irresponsible.

Like it is said before, some breeders are also irresponsible.

Do you know that some pet shops actually have their own in-house vets to take care of their dogs and also verify if the dog/cat is healthy before taking them aboard? or at least i know one that does that. THeir overseas animals are quarantined for a week to see if there are any health problems.

Btw, imported dogs may face health complications here because they carry disease that are rare/does not exist here. So, it will be difficult for our vets here to heal them. And some dogs do not have proper certs when they come in because they are the ones which are over-bred from those countries. No cert = no dog show. So, this is one thing that you may want to take note when buying from pet shops. If you have to, ask in detail for certs and whatever necessary before buying.

Ok, back on the topic...
But when you go to a breeder, do you bring along a vet to check out the dog that you want?

Or, when a breeder's dog is rejected by those responsible pet shops.. Do you think he will keep the dog or sell it directly? You won't be able to identify unless you are really good with dogs isn't it? Bear in mind that vets go study about animal health for 4 years!

If you have/know of a reliable breeder, good for you or if you know of a good petshop, its also good for you. The only difference between this two options is that the breeder will charge you lower because they don't have rental and bills to pay like the shop.

At the end of the day, find out properly where you're getting your dog from. And DON"T categorise everyone as the same.

not every pet shop had in-house vet

in sometimes, tat so called in-house vet is juz useless...

i remember pet safari oso got in-house vet...

but guess wat...last time the newspaper got report d unfortunate case of a poodle...

d poodle bought from d vet was very sick after arriving @ d new home....

so d owner bring it back and he got exchange for another puppy....

but d petshop didn't get a vet to attend to it....n d poodle juz left to die....coz d petshop doesn't wan 2 bear d medical fees...

they must have thought that curing d puppy will cost more than d original cost that they bought him...

another thing....petshop lock up all puppy in cage n d puppy learn to poo in cage....this is not an healthy way of training a puppy....therefore puppy is best to buy from home-care based..... n there r some many diff type of puppy various sources get packed together in d same pet shop.....virus n disease can easily be transmitted....if u buy it directly from d home where d puppy is still under his mummy care...it would definately be better.....

breeder only sell d leftover puppies to petshop....potential show dogs r sold to ppl @ higher price...non-show dog quality n rejected r d one which being selled @ pet shop....

tat's y u will never find a potential show dog in PET SHOP!!

as u had agreed...petshop puppy r more expensive....so why pay more??

Yeah...Sometimes I do agree with your statement. Whenever I walk pass a petshop, see the little pups or kitten in the tiny cage, I feel heartache. I mean, they are animal but theyhave life...too.

Esp the mobile petshop will display a few dogs at Gurney Walk (Gurney Plaza, Penang)...I see the pups so kesian! Got some naughty kids use fingers or stick to poke the pups, the petshop owner also dont care. They let the pup lick or bite their fingers...they owner also dont care... Yakss... Then you see the pups, look so sick and skinny...some times got skin dieaseas..Sigghhh...

Re: [phekling19] Against all petshops! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, if you are comparing to a very well reputable breeder vs Petshop, i would say the breeder is better.

BUT the problem is how well you know the breeder? like some cases, only when you plan to visit.. the breeder let the puppies out to play, otherwise, locked up?

A friend of mine bought a lab from a supposedly good breeder, and later found out the puppy was sick and died a few weeks later. Of course he paid lesser than a pet shop. How many of us out here knows how to check a dog unless you are a vet?

Again, i didn't say all pet shop has a vet that checks. Some pet shops take puppies from puppy mill, but their vets don't really care about the pups in the shop but focuses more towards sick dogs that ppl bring in because they will give them revenue.

The particular pet shop that i am referring and saying that they are responsible do not give out patient treatment. They specialise on in house dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, etc. They of course owns another vet clinic that do NOT sell animals, but only treat sick pets.

champ dogs dont come from pet shop. Well, i can't verify that and i think that is very subjective too. But all i'm saying is as long as you know your source well, then it should be ok whether it is a pet shop or breeder.

on dogs that cannot be sell, only they sell it to the petshops, yes. maybe those irresponsible pet shop owners or those owners that doesn't even know how to examine a dog!
