SPCA seeks funds and new home
By M. SIVANANTHA SHARMA
Metro, 16 May 2006

THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Seberang Prai is in need of funds and a permanent home to shelter its animals.

The animals, comprising 90 dogs and 20 cats, are now kept at a rented 0.2ha vacant lot at Kampung Besar in Berapit near Bukit Mertajam where kennels have been built by the society.

Society vice-president Lee Swe Yam said the lot was rented at RM500 per month on a two-year lease which expires in June next year.

He said the society, which needed at least RM3,000 a month for opera-ting expenses, was surviving on public donations.

“We raised RM10,000 during a charity event last month. We hold fund raising events twice a year,” he added.

Lee urged members of the public to join SPCA Seberang Prai which currently has 60 members.

He also said the society would hold a one-day camp next month to educate school children on how to take care of pets.

He also said that SPCA Seberang Prai was formed in 2004 with the co-operation of the Seberang Prai Municipal Council as part of the Local Agenda 21.

Lee said the society hoped to raise enough funds to buy a piece of property as a permanent shelter for the animals.

Those who want to help the society can sponsor a kennel at a minimum of RM200 per year. The sponsor’s name will indicated on the kennel.

The public can also sponsor food for one animal at RM10 per month or RM120 per year.

Those who want to bring canned and dry food for the animals can visit the shelter on Sundays from 4pm to 6pm.

Cash donations are also welcomed. Donors can write out cheques or money orders to SPCA Seberang Prai and send them to the society at SPCA Seberang Prai, P.O. Box 20, Bukit Mertajam.
