It'll be nice to get as many Beagle owners in Penang together and we can then share our resources eg. problems with, health, training, breeding etc.

I know there are many Beagle owners in Penang and of course the surrounding areas..eg Alor Setar but not much response so far in this forum/thread...I guess let's give it some more time.

I just recently had 2 more Beagles added to my pack, just now 2 weeks old, soon the Peanuts Cartoon strip will run out of names for my Beagles.

Anyone visiting Penang can always give me a call regarding Beagles or hunting dogs 012 4824235

Hello all,

I'm William, and I own a beagle as well in Seberang Prai. His name is Cody and he is about 10 months old now. Well, I'm not Penang lang as I came here for job opportunity. So Cody is my best fren here. My housemate said I have a mad dog because Cody will jump around them when ever they come home or run all over their rooms when they forgot to close the door..... hahaha...

Mr. Tuck Fook, I really have hard time training Cody. He seems like so so hyper active and most of the time just like playing around... cannot kuai kuai listen what I say wan geh? I tried to find a puppy class in Penang but I donno where. Do you know anyone can train Cody? He is basically untrain so I would like to send him to classes to make him more kuai kuai...Smile Do you have any contact?

I think I'll find oneday to pay you a visit to really see how others beagles characterstic are... Probably after Chinese New Year... Anyway, just to join the chat here to gather more information about Beagles....

Hi William,

Beagles are difficult to train. Sounds like your dog is probably bored to death and has so much energy to expend, when you get home.

I would not advise sending the dog for training as it'll end up obeying the trainer and not you !(worst case scenario)

Being very firm with your commands and a little punishment like a smack on the bum or flick on the snout, all with your bare hands so that you can guage the pressure, often works. Gradually hitting harder if it'll not obey and only when necessary.

A strong voice often is adequate but I'm not sure what your house mates or neighbours will think. Beagles are not as intelligent as GSD or poodles so don't expect complex tricks and commands.

The first command is undoubtedly " NO " and of course rewards must be given when it does a good job.

Have fun and enjoy your dog's company.

Hi Mr. Tuck Fook,Cool

I have a question to ask regarding to the ownership of my Cody. When I get my MKA cert. it actually comes with a green application to transfer to me I guess. Until today the form is still with me and I havent transfer the ownership yet. Is it neccesary to transfer? Non member is RM 150 + 5 Buck for postage + 50 for late surcharge??Crazy Inside the form Late Surcharge meaning application to transfer is summited after the birth of the litter. What is that mean? When I got this Cert also few months after Cody's is born... Shocked

Should I transfer the ownership to my name?? Behind the certificate doesnt have any registered owner yet. I'mstill confuse here.... Can anyone help me figure it out.... hhhmmm... thanks...

William

Re: [Will] Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

The breeder informs/reports to MKA that there is a mating and subsequently when the litter arrives, MKA is then informed of the number of puppies to be registered and a corresponding number of microchips and certs.(later) are sent to the breeder.

When the breeder sells the puppies, the breeder fills in the transfer forms with his name and signature and waits for the puppies'certs to arrive(maybe 6 months). When the certs arrive, the breeder will send the certs and transfers form to the new owners.

I suspect that the breeder has already done so in your case and the certs and transfer forms are filled in with the first owner's details and signed. USUALLY the breeder does not DATE the signature so that the new owner can submit the transfer registration at his convenience.

If it is not dated, there is no rush. You only need to do it if you mate your dogs and want to register the puppies. If it is dated then you can either register or not if you wish.

Possession of the transfer form duly signed by the breeder is good enough as proof of ownership of the dog.If someone steals your dog and the transfer forms together, then the thief is the new owner !

Hope the above helps.

Re: [tuckfook] Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

I have just recently bought a beagle puppy in Penang. Yeah...now I'm qualify to join the Penang Lang's Club.

Whoopy is just 2 months old. She is really sweet and adorable.

What..???MKA cert takes 6 months to arrive? No wonder I got cheated by the breeder last time when I bought my GSD in 1999, the breeder avoiding me and then disappeared, hence I could not obtained the cert at all, coz at that time microchip is not widely implemented locally. Call MKA office complained but they can't help me either, as I did not have any documentation except the dog (it was my 1st experience in buying a pure breed). That's why now I prefer to buy from a reputable petshop instead thru the breeder.

Now I found a gold-color american cocker spaniel in KL which I also like to keep as my pet, I'm quite hesitate to purchase as it is not from a petshop but through a middle man. Although the puppy claimed to have a microship but not the cert, what if the cert never send to me as promised?

Re: [GSlover] Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

MKA certification has been a bit of a controversy in the past few years. It is open to all sorts of deceit and there is unlikely to be any end to this. It is therefore up to the breeders to maintain a standard of practice and honesty.

This does not end with the breeders. Unfortunately, many pet shops also take advantage of the near impossibility of control and because of money, anything and everything is done.

Microchips are not confined to MKA. Anyone can purchase a microchip and embed into their dogs. It does not mean that the dog is registered by MKA nor is it proof of pedigree.

Most important is to buy the puppy you like, check the parents out and if you are insist, obtain all the pedigree papers. Papers are not really necessary if you do not intend to breed the dog.

A breeder will readily show you the puppies parents and pedigree papers if any. A pet shop will not have any of that available and you can only rely on what they say. Pictures mean nothing as they can show irrelevant pictures.

Don't put too much emphasis on MKA registration, it cost more money and......

If you are really into the dogs' lines/heritage, look at the parents and if possible grandparents. You'll probably be able to see similarities, marks etc that indicate heritage. Breeders who keep puppies parents and grandparents are probably more to be trusted. Breeders who keep such records are proud of their puppies heritage and probably not so much driven by the monetary returns.

The above is of course my opinion only. I do not aim to critise anyone personally nor do I hope to revive and arguments. I

Tuck Fook,

Your input is greatly appreciated. I really didn't know that much of complication in getting a pure pedigree, until I come to this site Crazy. Actually I don't mind my pet dog is a pedigree or mongrel actually, as long as the dog carry a good intelligent & healthy gene in its heritage will be fine.

My initial perception that the cert will tell me its heritage and health condition. Looks like I was wrong....then why on earth people sell dog with cert so expensive if it does not declare it is from a good healthy gene in its heritage.

Well...now looks like I cannot simply breed my dog as I am not sure of my dog's health heritage and I don't want to be an irresponsible breeder too Unimpressed.

Whoopy seems inactive today, just wondering what's wrong with her. She sleeps a lot. How do we know if a dog is having fever or something? She only had her 1st jab a week ago. I know it is quite easily for a puppy to fall sick after 1st jab.

But since so many people sell their puppies claimed to have cert, and that price is always not cheap,

Re: [GSlover] Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

Puppies might have a reaction to the first jab within the first few days but not usually later than a week. Take her to the vet asap.

When a dog looks inactive it usually is a sign of sickness which could be a host of problems from virus to bacteria to parasites. It takes a lot of experience to ascertain what is wrong. There are many vets near you. do not hesitate unless you can see that the puppy is getting better already. Most dogs and puppies recover very quickly provided treatment is given early.

There is a vet in Jln. Sg. Dua tel 6460137

Pedigree certs add value to a puppy when sold. There are many niave pet owners the world over but perhaps Malaysian pet dealers tend to be a little more ' shady ' LOL Price is a function of supply and demand. Breeders sell to pet shops at around 600 to 800 and these pet shops sometimes ask for about 1800 or more.

Hi tuckfook,

I'm also keeping a beagle with me and he is only 6 months old. Actually I'm working in KL for the moment, yet I will be going back to PG for a short break and wish he could meet some new friends when he is there. Usually, or are there any small gathering running around in PG?

I would love to join but my puppies are too young. I recently bought a cocker spaniel, found out that she brought along scabies with her from her ex-owner's MS. Luckily Whoopy is strong, she has been playing with Tasha (cocker) and have not developed any symptoms yet. But to play safe, the vet put her on medication as well. Now both puppies are on medication, so better don't bring out to socialize with others until they are fully recovered.

Can any Penang-lang share with me where is the best dog-friendly place where you can eat & dine, walk.

Long time ago I took my dogs to Youth Park for walk & play, kena warning , reason being it is a public place.

Does anyone keep Beagle in apartment like me? My Whoopy likes to talk (hum & bark) a lot, I hardly keep my dogs in cage, but still she likes to talk asking us or Tasha to play with her. Worrying that when she grows bigger the barking sound would be much too loud for my neighbours to bear.

Hi everyone,

So far I didn't really see any posting about gathering in Penang. But if it happen to have any gathering, I would like to join to socialize Cody more. He is growing older now and going to be 1 yr old soon Laugh.

As I can see, he started to become more mature and his attitude or behaviour is getting more stable. Not as 'siau' as before. At least now I can play with him without him running here and there like a mad dog.

Hi there. Yea, actually none of any that I come across too. In KL, I did send him to some training classes, just wish ge could involve some activities when I'm home for couple of weeks.

Hmmm.. I was thinking to bring my dog to the beach, was it a good idea? I kinda little worry that he might running around like a mad dog, that freaks people out then. Pirate Have you done this before?

Hi,

I'm on Penang Island, near the General Hospital. Phone number is in one of the earlier posts. You can always bring your dog round to my place as I have sufficient space for them to run around. A bit difficult for me to take my dogs out as I have 6 beagles right now.

Sundays is my day hunting so am usually not available otherwise most evenings I'm around.

Re: [lin_seang] Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

I leave for Sungai Kob on Sunday at approx. 7.30am. I use a 'scrambler' motorcycle and travel via the BKE. it takes about 50 mins. at my pace.

From Sg.Kob, I meet up with other hunters and beaters and decide where to chase. Usually we chase areas within Kedah and the furthest is Ulu Mahang, about another 25mins. away. We chase a few 'pulaus' or isolated jungle patches that have pigs, and carry on until about 5pm. Head back to Sg.Kob where the pigs are slaughtered.

You are welcome if you are firmiliar with the jungle, not afraid of leeches and mosquitoes and of course not worried about getting downright dirty.

Important to wear jeans, boots, long sleeved shirt. No perfumes and if you use mosquito repellents, the pigs will smell you and avoid you.

Must have common sense and not get into dangerous situations. You'll be mostly on your own unless some other hunter is prepared to have you tag along. As I'm on my bike, I am usually sent to the most remote areas to ' jaga ' which might not be easy for some to follow.

Have you been hunting before?

do you own a firearm, if so do you have the appropriate hunting licenses?

how do you intend to travel?

email me privately at tuckfook

Re: Beagle Owners in Penang [In reply to] Can't Post

My beagle is now coming to 4 months old. One thing I noticed that my beagle, Whoppy is quite timid, she does not enjoy going out for a walk or to a place she is not familiar with. She will make a lot of sounds, on the whole journey. Whereas my the other dog, ACS will be so happy to jump into the car and secure the front passenger seat.

I have read so much about Beagles misbehave etc, but my Whoopy is quite obedient. She has quite a cool personality, she won't answer to my call whenever I call up to her, she will come to me automatically if she wanted to be touched and find comfort. She won't get jealous even if I touch another dog. Really strange!
