Silky Terrier - Shy behaviour Can't Post

Hie there...Smile

would there be any suggestion on how to break the ice of my puppy's shy/timid behaviour?

His name is Donut. He waves and got pretty excited when he sees me return home but he would never run to me Mad..... If i walk forward to him, he will run away (more like jumping away like a rabbit) to hide from me. Probably not just me... any humans. Unsure

But at times if i sit down quietly, he will eventually come and manja with me.

I've tried to attract his attention with yogurt, dog cookies, etc (probably they r the food he likes), but it will take ages before he come foward to me.

He's not the 1st dog i had.... and also not the 1st silky i had... but sumhow he is the 1st that runs away from me (not entirely though).

The vet once told me this situation is due to his size and he would be better if he turns approx. 6 mths old. Could it be true?

Everyone with any advice to share?

Cheers ~~

Lots of Doggies' Love, Ange.

hrmm...

well the vet has got a point there, he is really small! prolly looks up at u and thinks u r some kinda giant!

according to the AKC,

Quote
The keenly alert air of the terrier is characteristic, with shyness or excessive nervousness to be faulted. The manner is quick, friendly, responsive.

Cheers!

Re: [angekok] Silky Terrier - Shy behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

did u only recently bring donut home? Maybe he just needs time to adjust to his new environment.

Also, I think it's important to see who he was with before he came home with you. Sometimes, the puppy's previous owner might have done something to the pup to make the pup develop a fear for humans...ie excessive scolding, shouting, sometimes even beating.

But don't worry too much, dogs have a way to know who loves them and who will not harm them. Maybe after more 'quality' time u spend with donut, he'll begin to come out of his shell a little. Smile

wowww,
this is strange case, as Trivor will be like crazy dog when sees me reutrning home from work...
I guess you need to socialise your pupp more often, bring him out to meet people, from children to old man, and form small doggies to large dog. Could t be he is used to hide under his own world that makes him feel not safe to greet human/ other doggies? Hope this help?
Hope to see his progress!!

Re: [cshellz] Silky Terrier - Shy behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

hie michelle,

donut has been with me for just a month.... prolly time can make up for this...

As for the breeder, the husband is actually a former MKA dog trainer and the wife is also a very nice lady... They haf pretty clean records with dogs... They r the parents of a good fren of mine... so, should not haf anything wrong from their side...

I'm onli afraid is that donut is not used to my hse, having so many ppl around... and prolly the kids might haf been alil to excited with donut.... just like wut SC and the breeder haf said .... hmmm.... Unsure

So, I announced at home yesterday, that no one is to scare donut with loud voices or chase him or stamp their feet loudly..... onli donut can chase human!Tongue

but things are getting slightly better everyday.... realy hope that he will open up to me more....

Lots of Doggies' Love, Ange.

Hi, SC....

the breeder suggested that sumone must haf scared him b4 in my hse.... so, i'll work harder now to ensure no one is to scare him....

not sure who is the culprit at home...Mad prolly they r just over excited....

I've made strict instruction at home that no beating for toilet training.... Smile

But thinking about it... he reacted like this since he return home... Crazy

Anyway, Yoda will be joining Donut this weekend... Hope everything goes well....

Cheers, everyone~~~

hi ange, Smile

Good to hear that the pup didn't have a bad first few weeks of puppyhood. So u know that possiblity is out. Wink

Well, sometimes when kids see these cute lil young pups they can't help but get excited. Maybe donut was a little overwhelmed by them. hehehe...but dun worry I"m sure in no time donut will be playing with them and prolley barking even louder!

Enjoy this while u can, once donut comes out of his shell, he'll wanna boss u around and that time also u pening! hehe Tongue So just enjoy lor for now! Cool

Hi.. Michelle,

sumhow wut u said is pretty rite... Donut's beginning to come out from the lil shell.... started to bark when excited (getting noisy) Mad.... and out of 10 times of calling her to "come", he will actually run to me like 5 times. hehe!

hmm... tt's an improvement.

Cheers!

michelle,

Scary huh,but still he's the same old cookie.

About the red eyes.Dog's eye will reflect light at certain angles, especially when taking pics at close range.

I wonder whose hair is more stylo,Cookie or david beckham?Tongue
