Help! labrador mix ? Can't Post

Hi all, Jaclyn here :)

I've recently adopted a lil labrador mixed puppy from Paws. her name, Dhora Marit 6-8 months old. I'm not sure of what mix is she, could anyone help me identify? She's getting very naughty these days, biting me alot that i do get scared sometimes.. thus, she doesnt listen to us when we call her by her name Dhora.. only certain times like when we have a treat for her.. why?

Also, she refuses to eat the puppy biscuits we got her.. various kinds like pedigree and royal canin, instead she loves to eat the wet food.. and our cat's dry biscuits. :( i dont understand why.. she even ate the cat's poo.. anyone know the reason ?

Id appreciate the help :) thank you all

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jaclyn,

Dhora is so cute Smile....but I don't know what mix....she looks small, like less than 6 months!

I'm not an expert, but I'll share my experience, hope it'll help Smile Puppies like to bite when teething and when they are too excited during play....There are a few ways to reduce the biting: 1) give her chew toys/bone to satisfy her chewing needs, 2) when she bites you, you quickly say 'ouch!' with a high pitch voice, stop what you are doing, then walk away for 20 seconds, you have to let her know that mouthing is not welcomed, 3) teach her to calm down when she plays too excitedly.

Doesn't listen when you call her name? You can teach her the command come, say 'Dhora come' in a pleasant voice, when she comes, then you give her treat...practise this many times in a day daily, very soon she will learn & come to you....Important is you don't ask her to come when you want to punish her, otherwise she won't come to you next time!

She doesn't eat the dog food? I think she is choosy la....it's very common that dogs like wet food eg. home cooked food or dog canned food. If you don't want to let her choose, you have to be strict and let her know that that's the only food she'll get, if she doesn't eat in 15 mins, then you take her bowl away, she has to wait for next meal. Most of the dog owners can't stand their dog starving (including me)....for me, I won't switch to canned food, but I'll change the brands...my GR used to be choosy, but now she is happily taking Nutro, because the food smells good. Your Dhora eats cat's food & cat's poo, most likely they smells good too.....One only way to prevent your dog to eat poo is quickly clean up the poo so that she doesn't have the chance to eat it!

If you are new in having a dog, I'll suggest you to get a good 'dog care & training book', it will sure help!

i think Wendy had already gave u excellent advise

my new puppy also tends to eat cat's poo, n i notice tat once....

so from tat day onwards, i'll thoroughly check every corner of my garden and make sure there is not cat's poo around....

but in your case, since the cat is ur pet, right?

do u let the puppy in the garden on her own very often? u should take time to supervise her.... n when u notice that she is approching the cat's poo, try to stop her and shout 'NO' .....eventually she'll learn not to eat it then....

Re: [WendyS] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks :) I had dogs when i was young and they knew certain commands, a maltese poodle who gave birth to a litter of 5. they respond quickly to commands, but not dhora.. for now. :( sometimes its frustrating but im being patient bout it, giving her more time :) she only perform tricks or obey commands when there is treats or food.. and she gets bored easily with her toys :(

im not sure but the person at paws told me she's like around 6-8weeks. she does look very small actually.. but she's growing. my boyfriend thinks she mengada only for not eating biscuits, instead only eating wet food.. we've gotten her biljac, pedigree, royal canin but none of which she'd eat as much as the cat's. so Nutro is good for wet food? dhora likes the pedigree alot so its okay. your GR looks really lovely !! does it cost a bomb for her maintainance? and grooming?

when she's overly excited while playing then suddenly she'd go urinate in the room instead of running out to pee as usual.. very manja and always wanting us to be by her side.. when we are to leave her in the house, she'd whine very loudly that my boyfriend, who pampers her so much always end up bringing her along in the car, which she prefers only to sit in the driver's seat..

well, she does listen to her name sometimes when she's very happy and wanting to play, and follows us around the house, but when she's bored or tired and lying down on the floor, she wouldnt budge or even respond to her name. which is why im confused if she actually knows her name, or not.. or is she confused. how many treats per day recommended? will she get fat? she eats awfully alot for a puppy.. per meal a big portion and she's still hungry.

Re: [Amanda85] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah the cat is ours just that the cat freely roams in and out of the house.. so we have taken the litter away since he could do it outside the house anyway.. my puppy Dhora doesnt know how to play with cats, that, by pulling on to the poor kitty's cat. Then when i tried to pull her away, the kitty accidentaly scratched me.. good thing the puppy knows and she licks my wound. hrmph. and yeah prolly the cat poo smells delicious.. the way she ate it was like, 'yuuummm heaven !!' sort of feeling.
do u guys brush your doggie's teeths and clean their mouth ?

Dhora gets excited meeting new people but when it comes to socialising, like my bf, with some pretty girls, then Dhora would immediately do a kind of sound, then go to my bf and sit with him showing her temper.. thats what we notice. good. so I dont worry. hehehe.. =)

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jaclyn, sorry that I missed your post earlier. Blush

Oh...Dhora is 6-8 weeks old, your first post said she is 6-8 months old, I was wondering how come looks so small....actually her size is ok for a 2 mths old pup although not so big Tongue

Nutro is dry food....I heard that Pedigree brand is not very good, but I think it's ok then if Dhora eats, just watch out for her progression. You might want to give her supplements. It's only the food & supplements that cost more for my GR, she doesn't need grooming, I only comb her as and when I'm free. Importantly she is born healthy, she sees the vet only for vaccinations, so the maintenance is I make sure she eats well so that she remains healthy, I bathe her weekly and spray with frontline once a month Smile

I think some dogs like food more than toys, as long as Dhora likes either of this, you can still train her Wink She is still small, as long as you have the patience and spend time training her, she will learn it sooner or later.

Ah, I find that teaching our dogs a command to eliminate is very useful too, you can make sure she pees/poos first rather than later she pees/poos at other places. To train is quite simple, when you bring her out for pee/poo, as you see her eliminating, you chooose a command (eg. pee/go toilet/shu shu, etc) and say that to her gently and praise her 'good Dhora', after she finishes you praise her more. Every time you do this when she is eliminating, after some time, she will know the command means pee/poo, and she will do it quickly if she has the urge. I usually ask my mixed breed pup to pee/poo first when I let her out to play or after playing for some time or when I see her sniffing on the ground, and it works!

How much treats per day?....hmmm, there is no fixed amount, if you use that for training, then it's better to use soft treats (coz dogs need to bend down their head if eating hard stuff, and you won't want to wait too long for her to finish the treat!) and you offer them in very small pieces (you won't want your dog to gain so much weight and get full very fast & lost her interest!)....if you are giving for snacks, then few pieces a day is ok Smile You can check the dog waist to see whether the dog is too fat, ideal shape is the waist is slightly in and can feel the ribs as you touch the body.

Re: [WendyS] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

eee i wrote wrongly, my bad :) doctor checked and said she's 3 months old.

for some reasons she hasnt much of an appetite to eat prolly cos shes bored with the food, but she enjoys the vitamins we offer her (the one in the tube) your gr is beautiful. well done :)

i guess she already knows the word when we ask her to go eliminate. she immediately knows, just that sometimes when we're not around, she tends to poo on other places instead.. but its okay. we give her time to learn :) she's learning fast id say.. it works.

what kind of soft treats and which wet food fo u offer your GR? im very worried bout Dhora's eating progress .. lately she seems so bored with almost everything.. im bringin her to the vet tomorow because of her choking lately. prolly she hasnt been drinking alot of water or its the treats we give her ..

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jaclyn,

Thanks for your compliments. How is Dhora now, no more choking?

I seldom give wet foods to my doggies, they are always on dry food. But I give bone to Daisy (my GR) once a week, sometimes I give home-cooked food. Some ppl give BARF, heard that it's good and dogs like it. I'm a bit relunctant to give raw meats, so I cook. I broiled the chicken meat together with some ikan bilis, green vegetables & carrots (chopped fine), no need to add salt/sugar, then serve with rice for Daisy.

Dhora is still small, don't give her big bones first, can try to give chicken necks. Ppl advise not to cook if you're offering chicken bones, if you not comfortable with raw, can broil it slightly first before giving to Dhora. My fren gives 3 different menus for her 3 mths old pup daily, morning - dog food (chicken soup for dog's soul), afternoon - dog food (science-diet), evening - cooked chicken necks, her pup likes it that way and is growing well. I'm not sure whether this is overdo, but if yours is very picky, I'll suggest home-cooked food. If you have time, you can cook for Dhora, sure she'll like it.

For soft treats, I normally give JerHigh (cut into small pieces) and Zuke natural (already in small pieces). I used Vitakraft yogurt drops before and it's good too. Apart from that, I give IAMS dog biscuits as snacks and greenies/rawhide bones for chewing & teeth cleaning.

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, you shouldn't worry if your pup doesn't like to eat its dog food at the age of 3 mths old. At that age Buckie didn't like his food either but I didn't give him wet food either because I have bought such a big bag of dog biscuits. It would be a waste if he doesn't eat them.

Anyways, it's easy to train actually.. I left the food there for 15 minutes and if he doesn't want to touch them I'd take it away. About 3 hours later, I will return with the same bowl of food and by then he would feel more hungry and eventually he will finish up the food. Tada!!! Try it , see if that works.

sorry for the late reply :) brought dhora to the vet - they gave her injections and all, so now she's ok. thanks.

Havent gotten Dhora her share of home cooked food yet, just dry biscuits and sometimes the wet food= science diet. So when we eat, she gets all watered up and all wanting to eat our share that she jumps up so much and barks.. whoa.. for a puppy thats massive jumping !!

have problems with her behavior now actually = moving on from food :( she's too naughty that she doesnt listen to commands. sometimes i feel so frustrated Frown

Re: [buckieluck] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

hehe.. ive tried your method. it works ! Thanks.

n its good too cos there are stray cats always coming in to 'steal' Dhora's food everytime. And she doesnt bark at the foodthief. She only barks at our house cat out of jealousy :( She still tries to eat the cat's food, tho. Most of the time if she doesnt eat her food we'd hand feed her or spoon feed before we let her have it by herself. eee..

bucky looks very silky terrier. cute. how big is he? like a husky ?

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Aww...At one time Buckie also didn't bark when he sees straying cats stealing his food. Maybe he thought it's better because he didn't need to eat his food once the cats finished it. Hehe Silly Dog.

Anyway, I kept on trying my method till about a week or two and after that he knows that the dog biscuits are meant for him and nothing else. Now he eats them like crazy and won't let the cats touch them.

Buckie's dad is a Terrier and his mom is a Husky (she just died not long ago due to ticks infection). He's almost six month old and when he stands up, he's almost reaching my waist. And he's still growing too. I think he would be a medium-sized Silky Terrier. Hahahaha funny!

Re: [missyjac] Help! labrador mix ? [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Jaclyn,

Good to hear that Dhora is ok with her food already! Smile

Do you use treats while training her? Make sure the treats are interesting to her so that she would want to work for it. Find out the food/toys that she really likes. And you need to train her persistently, ie. practise with her at least few times a day until she follows 100%, then you slowly fade out the treats. But you still need to give her rewards to motivate her on and off. Take my GR for example, I had problem teaching her to do 'down' last time, until I gave her home cooked hotdog as treats, then she followed immediately, now she do it without the treats already. Last few days I used broiled egg as treats for training my puppy, she likes it so much that she repeated the training many many times.Wink

I believe Dhora would have known the commands already but refuse to follow, is that right? Sometimes dogs will try not to obey immediately even though they already knew the command, you have to sound like you really mean it. They are smart creatures. Eg. when the dog picks up something from the floor and you want her to drop it, your voice & expression must be commanding in order for her to listen and drop the object immediately.

Can you pls tell me what commands that she normally does not listen? I'll try to help from there. There is one book that I find it quite good recently, it has step by step explanation with nice & clear pictures, and even included some tricks there, only RM39.90 from MPH, called 'learn it visually' something like that. I followed the book to train my puppy and it works, I strongly recommend it to you.Smile

Hi, yr Dhora looks exactly like Sophie (d dog I pic up fr outside One U) Its almost identitical. Wish I could post her pics for u. Sophie has already been rehome. She is bout 2+yrs now. She is Lab x mongrel...she looks like a lab but shrper features than d usual big head lab. Whn she's young she too very active n playful, mainly in the genes of lab...but very trainable....esp wt treats. Sophie also eat my cat's poo. U can find her head in d cat litter box most time after my cat poo. Only way, clear d poo fast.
I think Wendys gave u some very good adv.
When training, be a leader n not d boss. Be consistent n positive....n think like a dog..he he.
Go try d book Wendys suggest. She hv a successful training fr d book n I hear she's enjoying it.

sorry guys late reply : (

anyway - now i notice that dhora only stands guard when she sees the stray cats coming into the house and would guard until they come close - only she'd give chase and bark. good. i dont really like the stray cats too. gets on my nerves.

n hurray .. dhora finally eats whatever we give her.. in fact she enjoys them alot. but she's lazy. when she eats - she eats while lying down. or she wants us to feed her. such a baby . :)

I'm really sorry to hear bout your husky, but she must be beautiful. ticks are really a hassle- should really set our furkids free from ticks :( saw it in a newspaper when the spca caught the owner of the mistreated dog .. with one of the pics of the tick infested doggie.. that was horrible.. medium sized silky terrier? he must be really huge !! prolly smaller than a husky - as i can imagine. bucky sounds intelligent tho

there's one husky at my condo - just beside the guard house. it belongs to the owner of the security guards. It's really pitiful- whole day long chained up in a usual spot- no walks no nothing at all.. just left there. bath time - they only spray it with a hose. even under the rain - the dog is there under a tree. imagine how pitiful. wish i could do something about it. .

Got the book u recommended !! it's really good. Thanks Wendy ! Tho everything looks so easy - but gotta teach her step by step. Havent mastered everything yet - but it did help to strengthen my knowledge a little.. Worth the price.

As of the down command, dhora does it with treats - but i have to lure her down. otherwise she wouldnt understand the command. Think ill try your trick constantly .. heard that it's important to teach your furkids the down positions.. She's just lazy sometimes i guess. When she's jumping and all n i tell her to sit, she just wouldnt listen.. but she does sometimes only la. bought her big big pack of food. so heavy. if she doesnt repay me by listenin to my commands and keep loitering around the garden (papers and flyers everywhere), ill make her mow my lawn. hahaha :) just kidding..

the command which she doesnt really listen these days is down at all times, and sit when we walk her on the leash. The other day she she met a few new dogs, and she wanted so badly to play with them .. the other owner had to pull his big dog, sally away while we pull dhora too. she even had her paws on sally n she was whining. what should i do if i encounter things like this again ? what other commands are important which i need to teach her ?

Oh ! outside one u huh ? dhora is at my bf's house just behind centre point ! Sophie isnt with you? I saw a few of those who looked like dhora, selling at petaling street recently. They said its a collie mixed something else, not lab. But im very sure they looked just like dhora - a bigger version. so i guess it could be a collie - or like u said, a mongrel. she sheds alot of fur these days- heard its because she's of a mixed breed. definitely sharper features.

trainable.. not too bad. but she bites alot these days. very naughty. n yes. the book is effective ! everyone should get it ! cheap and good !!

Hi Nicky, the title of the book is "Teach yourself visually dog training", can easily find in MPH bookstores, only RM39.90. I bought mine from Popular bookstores, same book but cost me RM5x.xx, I felt cheated! I can show you the book when I'm going for JT, but maybe not this coming Sat coz I have to bring Sweet Pea to Klinik Kembiri for spaying....BTW, do you know how to get there, the map in SPCA website is quite brief!
