security measures. Can't Post

Dear Webmaster,
Of late, I have come to notice that my pvt messages were read and opend. The first one this has happened was from leopui, and the next was from Andrew and the latest was from ginl.
Please look into this matter at your earliest convenience and solve such future problem.
Regards.

The first line of defence is to always log out before you leave the forum. Without logging out, anyone who use your PC will be able to view all your private messages.

It is extremely unlikely that someone viewed your private unless :-

1) You have not log out
2) You use very simple password that is easy to guess
3) ???? Need to check further Smile

Cheers

The private messaging system is currently pending review and we will need to check if there is anything gone wrong with the program. Checking will take a lot of time and we have decided to deactivate the private messaging for the time being. Since Derrick, Rainbow and Leopui has faced similar problem, we will have to check thoroughly before we reintroduce in the future.

Your understanding will be much appreciated.

Those experiencing such problem please report the matter to me so that I know how serious is the problem. If Private Message can be viewed by others, it is no longer private and we will have to check for the program integrity.

Re: [Khoobg] security measures. [In reply to] Can't Post

Correction please Mr. Webmaster,
I did not say that rainbow, leopui were facing the same problem. What I did say was, MY PVT MESSAGES received from Leopui, rainbow, andrew and ginl were occasionally opened and read when I received them and I was 100% certain that I had never read and seen those messages before, yet they were marked 'read'.
What other members were facing with this problem, I won't know.
Last night, I noticed that you had disabled the Message section and when one wishes to send a pvt message, a dialogue box pops up and said that 'access denied'. This method of suspending the facility for the time being while the programme was under investigation was fine. But this morning, I noticed that the entire 'Message' section was taken off the screen at the top, thus I was not able to view any of my pvt messages which were received previously.
I am very concerned with two things, they are:-

(1) If the programme is re-installed will those messages be intact and returned to my pvt mail box.

(2) There are few messages received from members of the forum which are of GREAT importance to me. They are more than strictly confidential and I would like to retrieve them and store those information in my printer and delete them myself.

(3) Finally, perhaps you could re-install the programme immediately and post an announcement in the forum that any person storing information in the pvt message section, please remove them as this section will be taken off in 3 or 5 days notice.

(4) I am now very worried and indeed I am 'deadly sick' until you come to this rescue.

Regards.

Re: [Derrickok] security measures. [In reply to] Can't Post

There are 2 possibilities to your problem,

1) Someone is abusing your login id. There is only one level of access control, that is at the login level. One can just can your password and id and wa la...he can view everything from puppy.com under your id. Alternatively it is possible that you did not log out from your computer someone may reopen puppy.com with your logon still activated (especially if you set the "cookies" option, your password is stored in memory. This is more remote because why would someone at home read your mail behind your back?

2) The most serious security breach is that puppy.com is being hacked. At the inception, I have already highlighted that there is great potential for this first puppy related web site in Malaysia to reach a higher peak in terms of revenue generation. This is because in a short span of time, puppy.com has already established the goodwill and attracted many puppy owners. This is a gold mine for dogs related service providers and merchandiser to get contacts. But why hacked Derrick's id, that is because firstly he has such high profile and secondly information coming to him has a lot of $$$ implication. Perhaps the webmaster should monitor whether apart from Derrick's case, there are other anomalies such as interception of your web server and mail server. This could be indicated by bandwidth usage report or network assessment tools or activities such as email spamming etc (which I am not sure if there is already one). If there are signs like that, puppy.com is in deep trouble, either someone is trying to sabotage your website, or they are trying to steal your intellectual property. the forum should then consider adopting a good firewall and intrusion detection system.

Meanwhile Derrick, you are advised to change your id and password immediately. For private messaging, we could deploy another layer authentication.

Re: [Pat] security measures. [In reply to] Can't Post

All log files does not show any evidence of intrusion and we are still try to figure out whether it is caused by the program itself. Chances is the program is a not able to display the information correctly. When it is suppose the show that the mesage has not been read but show otherwise.

The checking of the software is a big task and will take along time and it is therefore not likely to complete in a week or 2.

Anyway, the private messaging is still widely used in my the other site at http://www.koi.com.my and we shall see if we will face the same problem.

Cheers

Once again I am the cause and root of all evels. But a quote from our Beloved Webmaster is equally sinister "The checking of the software is a big task and will take along time and it is therefore not likely to complete in a week or 2."
These posts were made in March 2001 and not 2002, how come on the left hand corner it said 2002??
Please check and clarify Mr. Webmaster.

Would not wish to argue with you, because Feb 2002 I was admitted to SJMC and you mean to tell me that when I was discharged, I had time for all thse?

One member could certainly confirm and that would be Pat. When did you bring KiKi over, this year or last year? It was one of those PVT messaging that was opened.
Good day!

Well, maybe I was wrong. But I remember when I joined puppycom, I was using the private message to communicate with other member. The function was disable when this thing brought up.

I'm interested to know when we can use it again.

I kinda like the fact there is no private messaging... that way all puppy.com members can enjoy all advice given, rather than taking their conversations into separate cubby holes and having one on ones?

whadya think? well just my opinionWink

Well, sometimes when we need to contact the other members, we can just use the private messaging rather than searching for their email address. I think this is more convenient as not all members publish their email address.

That is the point we have been stressing. Helping others by posting a reply via forum thread means that other visitors will also be able to learn from the posting. If there are any mistakes in the posting, other more experience members can also point them out. For all questions, more often than not you will always find that there are more than one answer to it and those who view the reply may be able to offer alternative solutions.

Hi Khoo,

OK if not private message ( i do agree with u on this) but how about a life chat room. I do believe this will help those that require immediate attendion or help. A chat room will help a lot and will also reduce the gap among members. Alternatively u can also save the contain being discussed in chat room and have a daily mail digest or wekly archieve for reference.

My 2 cents. If u need help for all on this, i'm more than willing to spend extra time and contribute back to the forum. I can understadn that u may not have enough time for ur family/work and furkids, but if situation is allow, y don add a new feature for the benefits of members.

Let make a better tomorrow together for our furkids.Tongue

Cheers
