Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

First for a 10 wk pup, I think u hav to feed her 3 times a day.
start feeding from hands is an option but of course you are right, you have to reduce/avoid it later.

and for golden pup, they are super hyperactive. You better use up her energy so she would feel hungry for food. For , he used to be so hyperactive during night time 8-10pm for his first few months. I need to bring him for a walk every evening and play with him at home too. When he feels hungry, sure he'll starve for food.

Also, since ur pup haven't go tru all the vaccinations, maybe she's not with a "good stomach" that cause bad or irregular appetite. Just be patient~

Re: [mackmack] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks for the advice
or is it that the food isnt nice enough? But im sure its not right? Its those good puppy food
which top breeders recommend... however, if i throw a cookie into her bowl, she will wallop it
immediately. maybe i should try another type of food.

i cant recall the type of puppy food she eats, as im @ work now, but its those brown "coco pops"
dry food.

i know i should feed her more... but she isnt even taking 1 meal a day... what more 3??? it
depresses me that she is not eating.... makes it like im not doing a good job....

even when she tires, she doesnt go for the food.... but more of the water! she cant get enuff
of the water... but why oh why... not food?

oh, and she has had all 3 vacinations already....

Maybe you shall get some other brands of kibbles to try on her appetite.
We human have our preference, sure the pets will do.
Afterall, they still need to eat.
Make sure you follow the same feeding schedule everyday, if she refuse to eat, keep away the bowl say...after 15 min. and skip that meal. Soon, she'll learn to finish up the food ASAP.

i called up the breeder and he told me tht sometimes it takes a week for the pup to get used to the place , etc.. . is it true?? the breeder also says tht is pretty normal and there's nothing to worry about.

she takes the same food over at the kennel... but with all the other breeds and she wallops up the food asap.. but not me place. i suppose havin her gang there helps......

Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh Sure~!
Not only she needs time to get used to the NEW home, but also the NEW owner, NEW food, NEW terms while training...... even for adult dog, once a while they will have less appetite than normal days.... or sometimes they just want to be alone....

don't worry, unless u notice any "symptom", then consult a vet.

Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

hello,

there could be many reasons why your golden baby doesn't wobble up the food... my 2 years plus GR has given me headaches about food issue from puppyhood till today.

but since your puppy is still so young, as mack said, she's probably having a hard time getting herself used to the environment.

also, goldens could be picky eaters - they might not be pleased with dog foods anymore if you've given them human food to consume (like a cookie)... just a possibility. some goldens (like mine) rather not eat, just to get attention - waiting for you to beg, pat him, before he slowly walks to the bowl to have a bite.

have you dewormed your puppy? maybe there's worms in her belly.

what i heard from my vet is that GR has many issues like this (dunno whether this applies to your dog). they refuse to eat. his suggestion is always - to take the food away if they didn't touch it within 15 minutes. they might skip 2, 3, or 4 meals continuously - but they'll get the idea soon enough.

however, i couldn't bear to see my boy starve - so always, he wins :| now i add a table spoon of yogurt for him with his food. and he finishes them immediately!

hehe...using food to bribe him into eating more food!! *touch wood* I don't have that problem with Sparkle cause he's a glutton. But I shall keep that in mind if he does start to get picky and don't take his food.

Thanks for the tips Hunter! Smile

Re: [hunter] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

she really refuses to it.....
the only human food ive given her is cookies
as reward for her to sit.
and you r darn correct that i cant bear to see her not eat...
sometimes i just spend 30mins-1 hour beside her trying to please
her to eat... and yet she still doesnt...

its really makin me really tired.

yea... sometimes i add milk / milo to her food..
and thn she will slowly eat them.....
but thts only like 2wice she did tht.... other times i add
milk /milo she doesnt eat too.... so if she doesnt eat, the
food becomes all soggy...

let me see, ive taken her home like 5 days now, and i suppose
she has only taken 4 cups of her food....
and we are supposed to feed puppies like 3 times a day? 3/4 cup
each time?

im takin her back to the breeder this saturday to be dewormed.
thts 1 week after she got home.... how does the worm affect her
appetite???

does your 2 yr GR still not eat even at 2 years??
my... how can i bear the worries .....????

i see other dogs will wallop food w/o any problem...
mine? wont even look at it..

ok... i will try the 15 minutes take away food thingie....

also... can anyone help on this..."when is the right time to
socialize my GR pup with my 8 year old mongrel @ home? at the moment
the older bitch is just barkin and attempting to attack the
poor little GR..... they are seperated by a fence.....

Another trick I used before:

"Go mum-mum, later mummy bring you go gai-gai~"

it works!

but dun ever try to lie to Mack, he won't forget my promises.... after he fishish up his food, and if I dun bring him out, he'll keep "requesting" until i surrender. Sometimes, I'll say :"wait....later." Okay~ he'll wait for another 5 mins and come back with his gai-gai-request again.

Smart? (TOO SMARTUnsure)

Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

You may start the training anytime from now on. Prior to any "professional" training, you may start to train her on your own. As for socialization, there shouldn't be any retriction. GR is definitely a friendly and human-oriented breed, you should socialise her as early as possible. I saw quite some messages posted in this forum suggesting that shouldn't bring your dog out before he/she had done with all three jabs. Well, I just can't agree with the statement.

(just as an example, in m'sia, after giving birth to a baby, the baby has to be kept indoor for a month so does the mom as well (to avoid "wind"?). well, for westerners....they don't care, they will bring their babies out as soon as both the mum and baby discharged from the hospital. Yet, no harm at all to THEM)

Well~ it's up to you to decide.

Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

maybe she is still a little girl, and really needs your attention... be patient. however, for the case of an adult dog, begging them to eat during every meal will make them get used to it.

they might think "oh okay, so i don't eat, they come begging me to eat. i kinda like that la! "

i've also added water/milk before to the food (thinking that the food is to harden for him to chew). worked a few times, but then he mogok again. haih.

i've also changed food so many times. i think i've switched 5 brands. really a headache to see him go straight inside his doghouse and sit like a statue even before i walk to place his bowl of food there. he's always waiting for me to say something. like mum mum. good boy. mum mum before slowly moving his head to the bowl like a king.

now, if he sits in the house and refuse to eat, i'll just simply close the gate and say "slowly eat la har." then he'll run out immediately, look at me through the gate, and run back to eat :) finally, i won the battle. must be stone hearted to face dogs like him - manja manja only.

i'm not sure for puppies.. but is 3 times a day too many times? maybe you can make it 2 times a day instead (but maintain the total amount of food given per day) because from what i know, some people only feed once a day, or twice a day.

the worms in her belly will make her lose appetite and not want to eat - and i mean REALLY not want to eat.

anyway, good luck! don't lose hope! soon enough your puppy will lick the bowl clean :)

YES,

till 3 month-old, 3 times per day.
till 5 month-old, twice per day.
after 6 months, once a day.
For different kinds of breed, the time to take a dog become matured are different. For Golden is 2 years, so mack was suggested by vet to take puppy food till 1.5-2 yr-old. Coz puppy food are more nutrient and suitable for growing pup.
snacks are always suggested, such as those for tartar.

Re: [mackmack] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

thank kews all...i see lots of GR kaki-s 'ere....

i can get her to eat now... but its like i have to spend 30mins - 1 hour each time....but she will still only respond by eating a bit.... once or 2wice a day......... sad huh? 2 yrs to wait? argh.. *patience*when only is it that i can put the bowl there and let her eat herself???

i am also doing the 15 mins bowl taking away thingie....

only thing now is if i add milk/milo to her food, its hard to save the food again to be re-used later on... its so soggy already, can be re-used again?.. and lets face it, its not cheap throwing away the food....

and since cage was mentioned, do you guys keep your GR in cage all the time? im afraid to mix her with my 8 yr old mongrel yet.. so whn im at work, she's at her cage.... ill take her for a walk b4 work, during lunch... (to let her poo wee)..... and after 6 she's got lots of freedom till 10+... ill be so darn tired thn..

back to my mongrel and her.... the mongrel is barking less at my GR now..... (they still have not met face 2 face)..........afraid tht the old mongrel will attack her...........any idea when i should intro them together and how? its a lot easier if one day i can just put the 2 of them in the garden together and let them play........... but only when?????

any advice anyone?

Re: [schatzie] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

YES, the only thing you could do is be patient while your goldie is progressing..... it will pay off in 2-yr time, remember this!Wink
I'd advise you to keep practising the 15-min rule. If the food become soggy, then you have no choice but to trash it. Even if they are all dried, you shouldn't keep the food in the bowl for too long or until the next meal time (contaminated?)

For me, never crate my dogs. I used crate for training purpose only, and once, for traveling purpose.

As for your concern, if you think your "mongrel" will fight with your goldie, then you should introduce your goldie to him as early as you could to avoid jealousy and the issues of who dominant who, who's going to mark the territory......
If you are not confortable to let them get together, then at least try to have them in contact at the gate/fence. For me, my way of intro new pup to old dog is by letting the old dog be the dominant one. Don't bring too much jealousy to the old dog, that will make him feel comfortable and safe for not loosing the love of his owner.
To look at the issue from your goldie side, you should socialise her ASAP. They are very human-oriented.... tru proper early-age socialization, the better they could cope with the environment, with kids, and with outsiders. A golden retriever is a very alert dog but don't be surprised that they will lick the burglar's face after barking at them~!TongueCrazy

Re: [mackmack] dog wont eat at scheduled timesss [In reply to] Can't Post

2 years... wow.. a long time eh?

its okies.. its definately worth the wait........

i keep the food up in a vitalite box... and then re-use it........ but now im only offering her 1/2 a cup each time.. so even is she doesnt eat........ it's only a lil which is wasted... normally she will finish like 1 cup a day only......... im takin her to be de-wormed tomorrow as well.... my breeder told me that his GSD once went 1 month on a food strike. and at the end of it, the GSD was as thin as a bamboo! he says its OK if she doesnt eat.......... but of course as the owner now, im worried sick

:(

as for socialising with people. she gets lot of it..... ever since she was at the kennel till now... that is not something im worried about....... and as for socialising with other dogs, she starts her training tomorrow too, she is very friendly with other dogs, saw that myself at the kennel...... im also afraid that she will be too friendly too my mongrel that she doesnt know tht the mongrel might attack her!

hmm... i did them once at the fence before, but the mongrel gets too aggressive... and the mongrel can put her mouth in between the fence, so im afraid of them fighting........ they did smell each other 2wice b4 only, out of like 20 attempts??? of cuz i want to socialise and let them play together, but the thought of them fighting just scares the shit out of me...

i want to let her out in the garden...... but right now i cant..... i'll give it another week of smelling each other first.... slowly introducing them 10 mins a day....... btw.. the older mongrel has her tail wagging 80 percent of the time too..... for the first time tht they actually get in ctt w.o any fencing, im planning of taking them outside the house and let them meet first.. at least tht way, there is no sense of teritory........... is tht a good plan?

yes the older one should be the dominant one...... but like i said.. what is she is too dominant.?

really appreciate your help.... just tht im afraid..... the 8 yr mongrel has got the house all to herself all this while.... but now, she has a new 'friend' in the house........ and bear in mind, she has nv beem socialised in the house with any other dog b4........... i used to have 3 other mongrels before the current one... and they seem to get on quite well together.. but thn... thy have been socialised with other dogs in the house......

both are females btw.......does it make a difference? is it easier or harder?

Well well well~

I have no worry about your GR socializing with ppl, i was more concerning about socializing with other dogs. It sounds to me that you had done your best and it sure take time to build up "their" relationship and mutual respect to each other.
I think your idea of having them get together away from "terrotary" is a GOOD try.Smile

DEar all,

I don't know about other Goldies, but mine is quite spoilt, completely spoilt I may say...He's very particular about his food too. Guess that what happen to your dog. Maybe Others have different view but My Bobby happens to be choosy too...I mean he won't touch his kibbles or other food unless its pork chop. Then when he's about 6 mth old, we bought a german shepard mix (Kirara). She's very hyperactive...Bobby has no problem with her at all. Since we still pamper Bobby a lot. Kirara has a very big a appetite, that's how Bobby got cured, he can't stand Kirara stealing his (leaftover) food. So since then, he determine to clean off his bowl. I have no problem over his eating now. Socialing with other mongrel is another story, we have about 3 mongrel but Bobby seldom go near them, I guess there's jealousy involve but since Bobby never got into their way, they leave him alone (maybe there's some sorta dog thingie)

Freda

schatzie,

I always keep my indoor, free to roam anywhere everywhere.Smile
During day time, he usually sleep on the couch, or sit on my bed, at a corner, so he could view a nice scene from my room. If he saw me coming back on the street, he'll "Greet" me by barking.... if i stop at my neighbor's place and play with their dogs.... he will get jealous not becoz of I touch other dogs but he also wanna go over to play with them too.
At night, he sure will sleep with me, on my bed (for a while or until I fall asleep). Then, he might later sleep on the carpet, in the hallway, or back to his couch. Lately, he prefer to sleep in his crate coz he thought that's his KINGDOM.Wink

Whenever i bring him out, i sure put a leash on him to avoid "accident", well....if anything happened, i'll be sued. (in US).

As routine, I'll walk(mostly jogging) Mack at least twice a day, morning (he'll wake me up and request for gai-gai) and evening (sometimes walking him out is to "tum" him to finish up his meal).
For indoor, well, we just chase around the house loh.... jumping up and down on/from the couch..... and training sessions.
and everytime i brought mack to wee-wee in the backyard, can play rough with him to kill his excessive energy too.

Never brought him for a swim, guess it would be a great sport to him.

Sparkle is 'supposed' to be a Japanese Spitz - according to my uncle who brought him to me. Well, I guess I'll just call him a "spitz" cause I really don't know if his ancestors were all pure Jap spitzs and he doesn't have a cert! hehe

Tried giving him some mango flavoured yoghurt the other day, just the ordinary brands with get at supermarts...but guess what he "lau sai-ed" after that. Unsure So must it be ermm...natural flavoured yoghurt or something? Or could he still be too young? (he's about 8 weeks)

gaa! don't feed an 8 week pup yoghurt! i think he's still really young and shouldn't be introduced such food other than his own doggie biscuits.

ps : my dog eats natural flavor yoghurt. but i really don't advice you to feed your pup more of that anymore.
