Dogs suited 4 obedience, agility n tricks Can't Post

Well Sidney, since u asked wat dogs r suitable 4 wat…here goes:

Dogs suitable 4 obedience trials: Lab, GR, Poodle, Shetland n Belgian Sheepdogs, Weimaraner, MS n a variety of Collies.

Dogs suitable 4 agility trials: Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Oz Kelpie n Cattledog, GR, Pyreneese Shepherd, Belgian Sheepdog, Poodle, Corgi, variety of Spaniels, JRT n a variety of small terriers.

Dogs suitable 4 tricks/ performance: Irish Water Spaniel, Poodle, Dalmatian, Weimaraner, MS, Keeshond, JRT, Fox, Cairn n Irish terriers.

Labs n GRs r unsurpassed in obedience work, hence most service dogs come from dese breeds. Border Collies n Shetland Sheepdogs dominate d agility field as dey r attentive n able 2 work at a distance from deir owners. Trick/ circus dogs r primarily Poodles altho d Irish Water Spaniel is very adept as well. If u ask me, d ‘Jack of all Trades’/ ‘all rounder’ title has 2 go 2 d Poodle as d breed is ranked pretty high on all 3 listings.

Dese r general indications n shldnt b taken as gospel. Any1 with deir own views r welcome 2 add on 2 d list coz I may hv missed out on some breeds. It doesnt mean dat a Pug or Pomeranian cant excel in d above n hv actually read n seen a couple winning agility trials n flyball races as well.Wink

Groovy (JRT), ‘I like Poodles, Labs, GRs, MS n...’

Most of the dogs u mention, their working and utility breeds, some of them gundogs. Wat can toy dogs do? Indoor activities i mean. Wat r the toy dogs gud at?

Well, wat can I say…toy dogs, as d name suggests, r small n cute n make wonderful mates 2 play with. Dey make great companions/ lapdogs with deir happy n entertaining personalities. Most of dem r quite adept at tricks n performing as well.

Bcoz of deir small stature, dey r suited 4 most tricks I’ve mentioned b4. Hv seen a Shih Tzu performing d leg weaving moves, a Pom excelling in jumps, a Pug winning agility n a Silky shining in obedience. D only limitations here r d owner’s time n patience, not d breed type.

Indoors, ur options r limited 2 playing games with dem (c thread below ‘Games 2 play with my pups’) n teaching dem tricks I guess. Other den dat, dey r pretty adept at eating n sleeping, haha…

BlushForgot 2 include MS in d agility list as well. Now updated:

Dogs suitable 4 obedience trials: Lab, GR, Poodle, Shetland n Belgian Sheepdogs, Weimaraner, MS n a variety of Collies.

Dogs suitable 4 agility trials: Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Oz Kelpie n Cattledog, GR, Pyreneese Shepherd, Belgian Sheepdog, Poodle, Corgi, variety of Spaniels, JRT n a variety of small terriers. MS.
Dogs suitable 4 tricks/ performance: Irish Water Spaniel, Poodle, Dalmatian, Weimaraner, MS, Keeshond, JRT, Fox, Cairn n Irish terriers.

U can actually cut n paste Sidney’s pic so dat d unwanted dark spaces to d left/right of him can b removed, n his avatar will den look bigger. Look 4 d box with broken lines in d Microsoft Photo Editor program ven u open d picture file.Cool

C dat u r going 4 d 'Fastest Eating Duo' comp, good luck. Think u better start training urself 1st...mayb given a really, really cold n frozen icecream on d day. Hv tried b4 n its more difficult den it looks.Tongue

Fastest way 2 get ur dog 2 come. Sit on floor, legs stretched out, command, wave n clap enthusiastically 2 get Sidney 2 come 2 u. I think d bigger problem on hand is getting ur tiny Silky 2 gobble up d tray of dogfood in record time...still its d participation dat matters. Unless dey hv different class sizes, Sidney will b up against Bulldogs, Beagles, Mastiffs, Labs, GSDs etc. Careful he doesnt get gobbled up in d process, ha ha

Heya,

Dogs suitable 4 obedience trials: Any dog who is hyper Tongue wihch can range frm...malinois,shepherds,dobes,min pins,ms....to bull dogs on crack, mastiffs with sugar highs....

Seriously,it is not breed specific but more of trait specific. Have to find a dog that is not independant (like husky/hounds...tht's y they r difficult to train),loves to play & is determined.

Dogs suitable 4 agility trials: Same thing as above...plus they hv to be agile.Malinois,Border collie,JRT's(actually terriers in general),Poodles, dobe's,boxers, pit bulls,dalmatian....etc come to mind

Dogs suitable 4 tricks/ performance: Same thing as well.

Thing with all these is tht they're categorized under training tricks/performance/ob...all need the same traits. As for agility...only extra is physicality. Don't b fooled though. A high drive reteriever can b faster than a low drive jrt.

WinkU r rite, there’s no substitute 4 play drive n determination. Ability 2 focus is key as well.

D independence/dependence trait can work both ways…4 agility, some degree of independence is desirable 2 enable dogs 2 work from a distance from d handler n maneuver d obstacles with verve n gusto.

Wld love 2 c a Dobe or Pit Bull doing agility…cool.

Hey Groovemaster,

From reading the forums, you seem to be very experience and creative when it comes to dog tricks.

How about holding/organising classes where the owners can bring their dogs and learn more about tricks and performance?

My doggy loves to perform tricks. So far I have thought him paw, hoop, high five, kiss, dance and roll over. Would love to be able to teach him more.

On a seperate note, do you know where I can get a clicker in Malaysia?

CoolThnks 4 d vote of confidence but not really qualified 2 hold any classes lah. But v r more den willing 2 share any tricks n learn from u as well. Yup, since u’ve got some basics tricks up ur sleeve already, perhaps can try some of d trickier 1s eg. spin clockwise n counterclockwise, weaving thru ur legs, jumping into ur arms etc. Just hv 2 lead ur dog with his fav treat/toy 2 d desired path n give a consistent hand signal n voice command. Practice + patience + play (lots of it) = perfect.

Wats ur dog’s name n wats d dance move dat he does?

I hv a clicker but not using it at d mo, find dat toy balls work fine with groovy. Think d clicker was bought from d Bangsar pet shop facing Jln Telawi.Smile

Yeah. I am planning to try the more difficult tricks with him. I bought a book that is loaded with tricks. But most of the tricks are thought with a clicker. That's why I am desperately looking for one.

How much did you buy your clicker for? If you are not using it, would you consider selling it to me?

Scruffy is my dog's name. When he dances, he just put his front paw up on my tighs shuffle his hind legs around.

Hey I was just wondering are you the guy with the JRT in the Agility Class?

Hv a no. of books on tricks as well n 1 on dancing with dogs which is really fun. Clickers shld preferably b used only at d beginning ven teaching a trick. Once ur dog knows d trick, den its best 2 phase out d clicker...otherwise ur dog may keep waiting 4 it b4 he moves on 2 d next trick.

Will check d shop 2 c if dey still hv any left, think its bout RM10. Pretty costly 4 a simple piece.

WinkScruffy's neat dance step can b further developed into a piroutte whilst standing on his hind legs, try it if he's old enof.

In d agility class, there's 2 JRTs. Mine is d rough coated 1 with longer legs. Think we've met Scruffy b4 at ppycom Tmn Desa training sessions.Sly

I think RM10 is alright. Scruffy living expenses is about RM200 a month on basic food only. Not to mention his vitamins, toys, treats and so forth. Unsure

Anyway, can you tell me the exact location of the petshop in Bangsar? I have been looking everywhere for a clicker and cant seem to find it. I have also written to the clicker website to ask if they are willing to ship the clicker to Malaysia and minimum purchase for shipping but no response till now.

Yeah I think Scruffy has met Groovy before too. Scruffy just started his OB class last week. So we will be there every Sunday at 5.30pm. If you happen to be there then maybe you can show me a few tricks and how to teach them.

Balancing d treat on d nose trick? Can b difficult if Paco is d cant stay still type, like Groovy Crazy. Hana d Beagle can do it very well so I guess it all comes down 2 training n patience.

Mayb can try balancing treat on his paw 1st b4 attempting d nose trick. U may even wanna start a d very beginning by placing a treat on d floor nearby, get him 2 stay still n train him so dat he will only go 4 d treat upon ur release command ie. ‘ok’, ‘get it’. Once he is reliable with d ‘wait’ command, get him 2 down n place a treat on his paw. Again, he is only allowed 2 go 4 treat upon ur release.

Moving on2 d nose will b tricky if ur dog is fidgety n cant stay still, so best 2 try dis while he’s calm. Need 2 train him 2 hold his head still, by holding his mouth together with ur hands n giving a command eg. ‘hold’, ‘steady’. If he can do dis, den it’s all a matter of releasing him with a command or signal eg. clapping ur hands, snapping ur fingers. He’ll miss a no. times but will soon learn 2 flip d treat straight in2 his mouth.

Groovy can only do d balancing on paw trick, still cant perform d nose trick. Good luck. Wink

did u knew about the treasure hunt @ ikano..??

i went there wit pacco last week n got the chance to try out the agility equipment../....

initially pacco doesn't want to jump at all... but after several force jump by me.....n delicious canned food as reward, she can jump the low obstacle.... but still duwan to climb up the platform....

n recently, i'm trying to make some DIY obstacle at my garden.....i used my dad BBQ stick n stab into the soil as weaving pole..... but ended up wit lots of hole on the grass......n my grandpa get mad at me.....

how to train for weaving pole arh?? what i did is use the treat n lure her to cross over.....is that right??

Re: [Amanda85] Dogs suited 4 obedience, agility n tricks [In reply to] Can't Post

Just make sure d bbq sticks u use arent too sharp at d edges. Yar u wld normally hv 2 use a fav treat/ toy 2 tempt him coz its not a natural movement 4 a dog 2 zig zag between poles. Weave poles r d most difficult agility obstacle 2 master n will take lotsa of time n patience 2 get rite. Tongue

Initially u wld hv 2 move ur hand in a weaving motion 2 get ur dog 2 follow suit. Can also use ur knee/calf 2 keep ur dog in d weave poles. Ven ur dog is comfortable with d weaving motion, den can reduce ur hand movement 2 just holding d treat in a straight line in front of his nose, just alongside d poles. Den gradually phase out d treat n hand till he can perform d weave with u just shuffling in small steps parallel 2 him. U’ll need 2 continue motivating him by repeating d ‘weave’ command as he maneuvers d poles.

If u wanna find out more bout agility, can join us at our monthly just 4 fun sessions with our homemade equipmt.Wink
