Constant barking at others may indicate dat ur JRT hs been poorly socialized especially with humans. May also indicate restlessness due 2 insufficient play/exercise.

If it’s as serious as u mentioned, den u really need 2 put a stop 2 any unnecessary barking immediately or it’ll bcome intolerable 4 u n others. Say ‘Nope’ / ‘Leave it’ / ‘Ssshhh’ in disappointment, display authority n hold his mouth closed 4 a moment. A slight rap on d mouth with ur knuckles may b warranted 4 extreme cases. U've 2 b consistent with d command n correction which shld b handed out at all times n not as n ven u feel like it. Reinforce quiet moments by rewarding with praise n play.

With a JRT, u need 2 b tougher on discipline as he’ll climb all over u if u dont show who’s ‘top dog’ in ur household. Den it’ll b very difficult 2 undo any bad or annoying habits he’s beginning 2 exhibit.

2 get him accustomed 2 people, u’ll hv 2 socialize him by bringing him 2 meet with as many relatives/ friends whenever possible. Also, try bringing him 2 areas where pedestrians pass by continually eg. parks n coffee shops (ven he’s in a good mood). There’s no substitute 4 dis essential aspect of socializing so dat he’s comfortable with people n surroundings.

Ensure ur JRT hs enof chew toys 2 keep him occupied ven alone. U can use toys 2 distract him during walks. JRTs need 1-2 hrs daily exercise minimum. If u can put in d time n effort, ur JRT will gv u more respect, bcome more settled n less boisterous in exercising his vocal cords. Believe me, a healthy dose of exercise will do wonders 4 ur JRT.

Groovy (JRT), ‘Wats ur JRT’s name…looks pretty cool n assertive in d picture.’

you have to show ur dog some disiplin or ur dog will misbehave. That means you have to train him 2 b good since the dog is still young and pay more attentionSmile. Before 1 year old, the dog will pay loads of attention. After 1 year, the dog will pay less attention

Hi thanx for the reply

The only thing is we do alot of camping come summer/winter. Weve done this since he was 4 months old. So he does get to see alot of people. We go visitng family he comes with us. He's always round adults/children. I cant say hes arrgresive, he just barks. But he does it with a smile on his face if that makes sense. I mite try n bribe him with toys, he loves balls and chases them all day long. I hope this works

Thanks for the tip.

Does he bark at all pedestrians or strangers only? Does he bark only in certain environments? Does he bark at other dogs?

If he is ok with people n dogs generally, den d problem may not b dat serious. Hv u established who’s d top dog in ur home, otherwise he may just b thinking dat he’s doing u a favor n is just protecting u from passer-bys by barking. Another trick is 2 get d regular passer-bys (if possible) 2 hand out treats 2 him as dey approach so dat he associates d walks/ passer-bys with good times n fun. JRTs can b pretty possessive with deir space n owners.

C dat u’ve posted a query on ‘castration’ as well. My JRT has gone through d procedure primarily bcoz v didnt intend 2 breed n also 2 make him more settled n less likely 2 roam around. Calmer…I’m not too sure. 2 date, no side effects n he’s still running n jumping as agile as any JRT I know. In fact, he’s quite keen on agility. Like Alfie, he also needs 2 vet thru all dogs in d park/ surroundings b4 getting on with his own business.Smile

R u from Yorkshire, Northern England? U’ll b d envy of us Malaysians as u must hv plenty of dog friendly places 2 bring ur dogs 2 especially ven it comes 2 outdoor activities. Isnt winter too cold 4 camping?

Groovy, 'I like adventure n d outdoors.'

Hey Groovemaster

he barks at every1 n any1!!!!!!!!

I think to be honest he's just protecting us, but enuffs enuff.

He barks agressive if he see's other stranger dogs. If i introduce him to strangers he's fine.

Do u think ur jrt as settled after the op??????

Yeah im from West Yorkshire in Northern England, yeah it does get abit cold in the winter camping but i love it!!!! it is alot nicer doing it in the summer.

Hi.. you know what? you got to find out for sure if he barks out of fear or just plain aggression..Is he baring his teeth when he is barking? there is a whole lot of difference is barking out of fear, playfulness and territorial issues.. there are some good books out there even you can find ot over the net that shows dog's body language.. Until you figure out for sure the reason he barks... you really can't fix it..

Think there is no easy way out 4 u but 2 b consistent with d correction at all times, reinforce d quieter moments n increase his socializing opportunities with people n dogs.

V had 2 make sure our JRT doesnt bark whilst at home as v hv sensitive neighbours. So from day 1 onwards, v reinforced d need 2 b quiet whilst at home. Even outdoors, barking is not permitted unless he’s just playing excitedly or alerting us 2 suspicious looking characters. He’s gotten pretty good at it, hardly barks n will only growl slightly at strangers who dress funny. V bring him along with us 2 quite a number of places, even d weekend markets which can get very crowded, so dat he’s conditioned n comfortable with d masses n environment.

Alfie is still a pup n can b taught but dis requires u n all family members 2 b consistent with d correction n training, which means a lot of ‘Sssshhhh’ing 2 b done, b it in/outdoors. If he continues 2 bark, stop walking n hold him in d down position, express disappointment n ignore him 4 a couple of minutes. He has 2 learn dat barking will not get him anywhere n his regular walks will b disrupted. JRTs tho stubborn r quick learners. But it has 2 start today.

Also cant stress d importance of daily exercise n play as a JRT really needs dis more den any other dog.

After d op, Groovy is slightly more settled n doesnt mount or hump as much. I guess d urge isnt as strong. But he is still as excitable n active as ever. Still needs supervision so dat he doesnt dominate other dogs n still goes after cats n squirrels.

Groovy (JRT), 'Play must b d most happening word in d English dictionary'

hiya happytux

Thnx for the post

Alfie doesnt show his teeth, plus with him being only a pup his barks not too aggresive, he sounds abit pathetic to be honest hehe.

I honestly do think its shear protection, but i will put a stop to it, i like him warning me theres someone there but after one bark i will start shhhhinh him up. n maybe treating him if he does.

Thanks

Re: [Driving Me Mad] Jack russell pup [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

my dog has the same problem now (at the age of 2). before that, she was less noisy but i could control her. actually she is very alert. and i notice she began to become nosier few mothns back. a little noise will make her bark. later i discover that she was bored cause she's the only dog at home. she goes for training and she is obedient but the sudden change in her is because she began to feel bored with her life. she will sit at the gate every morning and look at the strays. she wants to join them, she just wants to get out of her cocoon (that's how i think she felt) so, i began to bring her to my aunt's place to let her play with another dog. sometimes she will sleep over. her behaviour slowly gets better ( she's back to her normalself).

in my case, i learn that my dog felt bored. she hates to do thing routinely.

now, and then i give her surprises and bring her to socialize not only human but other animals (she loves cats).

every dog is different. each problem in each dogs need to approach differently. do keep on trying methods till you get to tackle the problem. don't give up. they are very subjective. wish you luck in trying.

Have you thought abt getting your pooch a companion, bcs my first dog (whisky) was lonly n thats wot made me get me pup alfie

Dont know much bout grass munching mutts, but hv heard dat may happen ven dey arent feeling too well or may just b bored. Other den dat, cld b he's just being a regular clown n trying 2 do an impression of a cow. Do u stay near farm animals?Tongue

JRTs get bored easily, hence lots of interactive play n fetch is essential.
