Theraphy Dogs Can't Post

Hello,

I am training my 2nd golden to be a theraphy dog. I am wondering if there is any place that i could get him to "sit" for a test to be a certified theraphy dog? is it MKA?

He is doing wonders with people around him but I want to get him certified so i can bring him places.

Thanks

i doubt there is such certificate for animals in malaysia...

however, you can still take your dog to old folks home or orphanages... i know a few forum members are already doing that... wonderful, really... Angelic

leecy,

theraphy dog is a dog who has "healing powers" all sound dog can be a theraphy dog but they have to be very calm with a steady temperamant and not rough. they are used to bring happiness to sick people or children. its called "zoo medicine" in other western countries. theraphy dog are allowed to enter old age homes, orphanages and also hospitals but in malaysia, this is not practise very well cause it does take a lot of dedication esp when it comes to children.

my goldens have changed some people mind set about dogs. we have visited "good muslim" friends before and they dont have any problems with the dogs cause they are well behaved. it requires a lot of work on our side but its worthwhile.

hi kelsey,

how's the therapy training coming along? i've just returned home to KL recently and am interested in eventually moving my lab into therapy work. at the moment he is still very easily excited but i've noticed that he does wonders with people. even fellow muslim malaysians seem to find him approachable enough to stop and say hello.

i'm thinking that training him to be a therapy dog eventually will make it easier for me to bring him with me when i move to shanghai again next.

ohh we are training him at home. it has so far halted as we are quited busy with work. we are moving overseas by year end. canada to be exact so everything else seems to have stopped for a while.

your lab is with u? or taken care by others? u need to work on the easily excited part as he can't be too excited.

ah, my lab is back with me now. not sure if you remembered, i was the one looking for an emergency temp foster while i was away.

but i'm back now and he's back with me again. don't think i'll ever leave him again!

yeah the easily excited behaviour needs some working on. he's 1 1/2 years old now and unlike GRTs, labs tend to be even more notorious in the 'excited' department. but i've observed that he has gotten much calmer with age and perhaps neutering (?) a little more socialisation and i think it should be a problem.

i socialised him as much as possible as a puppy but i think he still needs some work there. but i'm sure you'll know how challenging it can be to socialise a large breed dog sometimes.

yeah i remembered u asking for help before but i am glad u are not leaving him.

my golden girl is easily excited too so she is just a good candidate with the kids. the golden boy who is much calmer is not neutred yet but he is so calm. i think it's just his temperament. both are socialize properly. we adopted the male when he is 5 years old and the previous person maybe never bring him out.

he has begun to trust us 1 month after staying with us. now after 5 months, he has fully trust us. he still is scared about a lot of things but lucky my golden girl (the dare devil) is not letting him be scared.

both of them play a lot during the day. both are also very very jealous so equal attention is important.

with time, your lab would be calmer. i see improvement in Roxy, she is calmer though not spayed yet.

Re: [leecy] Theraphy Dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

"Therapy dog" is the common term used to describe canines who visit people in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes, mental institutions and schools.

Dogs or other animals can be used in a variety of situations, said Dr. J. Keith Festa, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at St. Francis Hospital. He said there are two distinct functions: animal-assisted activity and animal-assisted therapy.

"Activity is where the dog or pet does a meet and greet," Festa said. "It could be in schools, hospitals or nursing homes and is more of an enhancement to [the person's] life."

With animal-assisted activity, there is no way to measure the end result.

Pets are used in animal-assisted therapy to achieve goals, Festa said, from physical development of motor skills to improving mental health and self-esteem.

Dogs like General Tso provide comfort to people for brief periods of time.

"You can't separate the body from the mind," Festa said. "When you get that comfort, it takes your mind off your problems. With a better mental attitude, you do better physically.
