Home made agility obstacles Can't Post

4 those who hv expressed an interest in getting deir own agility equipmt may wanna try buying similar furniture items or making dem, since v cant buy any proper agilty equipmt in Msia at d moment. Make a visit 2 Ikea or ur local hardware store n u’ll find certain items which can b assembled as obstacles. 4 agility obstacles, I hv used d following items/substitutes in place of:

Jumps - Small dogs: plastic shoe racks ven turned onto d side, will make a comfortable 12 inch high jump. Large dogs: need a no. of shoe racks placed on top of each other 2 make a jump of approx. 20 inches in height. Otherwise, can make height adjustable jumps from PVC pipes, set up is similar 2 d high jumps v used during schooldays.

Tunnels - child’s play tunnel, approx 10 feet in length.

Weave poles - small dogs: bamboo poles/ cane, large dogs: PVC pipes. Slipping d PVC pipes over tent stakes will den make it easier 2 shove d poles in2 d ground. Better still, if u can find poles which are flexible at d base. Poles 2 b placed 18-24 inches apart.

Dog walk - wooden planks (width 12 inches, length > 6 feet) n stable crate/chair/coffee table - need 2 b held firmly 2gether. Easier if practice one side at a time ie. stepping up or stepping down.

Pause table - any stable coffee table with good grip > 2 feet wide, 1-2 feet high.

Hoop jump - hula hoops, held by hand or attached to PVC platform, 1-2 feet high.

Layout of obstacle course is up 2 ur imagination. U may also wanna check out some innovative homemade obstacles by a puppycom member, shyeow2, at this link: www.malaysiaecs.5u.com/photo6.html. Any1 with ideas on makeshift agility obstacles r welcome 2 add on.

Re: [meiyoong] Home made agility obstacles [In reply to] Can't Post

Hv bought or tried 2 make most of dem, except 4 d dog walk n A-frame as dese r bulky items n not easy 2 transport. My dog walk isnt a permanent fixture held by proper nuts n bolts but a really makeshift 1 n hv 2 hold d upside n downside planks or stack dem against a stable object. Still trying 2 figure out how 2 get/make a flexible A-frame which can b transported in a car. Now if I can get a small see saw/teeter, den dat‘ll b fun.

Most of dem r not too costly except 4 d child’s tunnel which can come up 2 RM50 or more, really hv 2 look round d hard ware stores/ Ikea 4 good deals. Think ur local Chinaman store will b cheaper den d established ones in shopping centers but den d latter has a better variety.

In order 4 ur beagle 2 enjoy d activity, he/she shld b quite fit n not overweight Seeing dat dey r perpetually in d food zone, dat means minimal snacks n treats but den u’ll still need treats 2 entice him through d obstacles, so u r caught in 2 minds. Unless ur beagle happens 2 b more toy oriented, den u r in luck. Toys r also cheaper n more reliable in d long run. But try dem out n c wat works best for ur dog… most likely treatslah, 4 beagles.

Good luck in ur attempts. I’m sure ur dog will hv fun trying 2 figure out d obstacles. If u come across any suitable dog walk, A-frame or see saw, do keep me posted.

Ha, ha, sneaky…but wat an excellent idea! Wat?, u think strays dont need 2 do agility meh?

Let me say dis 1st. I think dat d job u guys r doing is commendable n dont let other idiots (in d other threads) tell u otherwise. Totally unselfish n noble. It’s a thankless task with no real rewards except 4 d forlorn n bewildered looks from d rescued animals. D sad thing is dat, d weirdest looks n unkindest comments will come from our own kind. Critics who dont offer any help shld den stay in deir own cozy homes n leave d real work 2 d real people. Sigh…dont give up on dem, there’s always some lost souls out there.

Getting back 2 d equipmt, just wanna find out how big is ur SPRV compound anyway, is it covered with grass n is there space 2 store d equipmt, if available? Saw a TV program ‘Cell Dogs’ recently whereby prisoners hd 2 recondition troublesome/abandoned mutts n teach dem 2 run through an agility course, which was den used 2 assess d dog’s temperament. All d mutts perform very well n were successfully adopted into new homes. So any form of training, even agility, goes a long way in increasing a dog’s chances of adoption.

Child’s tunnels r available from Ikea, d kid’s section. Dey used 2 hv a larger 1 for RM50 but recently hv only seen a smaller, nicer 1 for RM100. Hv also seen dem in Bangsar Village shopping centre in a child care outlet on d 1st floor, don’t know how much tho’. Happy hunting.

My pup can jump really high but the hula hoop 1 he's afraid of it. Once he sees it he quickly runs 2 his cage that's y he cant do so many jumping through tricks but he can do jumping over tricks. Like my leg. I put high he can jump high and over.

Wow, great work! Is dis off leash as well? Also posting good times 2 boot, especially ur CS, Russell. Wld expect Jojo 2 post a faster time as he looks lean n mean but guess ur CS knows d poles better den I do.

Groovy’s only doing 10 poles as cant find similar bamboo poles 2 add on, may hv 2 get d ‘rotan’ type as last resort. Hvnt really timed him, but wld b interesting 2 c.

Better not hijack Milo’s agility thread with our amateur pole weaving attempts. Will b glad 2 further pursue ur dogs’ pole weaving accomplishments in d next thread below under ‘Home made agility obstacles’.Wink

Hi Groovy Master,

oops sorry for the wrong type Groovy.. hehe

wow...now only seen u had build so many toys.. may be we can share idea how to build the toys, i build 12 poles using pvc as base + pole, it cost me around RM50. it's convenient to carry and keep as well.

yea, they both weave off leash, i found on leash very difficult for myself... just try whatever method that work.. russell luv agility, jojo not so.. she can't do A frame.. hopefully try harder she can do one day

just time them see if they hv improvement... just for fun... i know is hard, i weave it myself i get pening..hahaha

Re: [Sydney] Home made agility obstacles [In reply to] Can't Post

Sidney’s a pup n his joints r still developing, so careful bout d jumping bits…keep dem low n at a minimum level till he’s 1 y.o. Good 2 see dat u r already introducing him 2 some form of agility. Will keep him really busy den.

He’s still young n d equipmt can b introduced gradually. 2 get him familiar with d hoop, try leaving it around so dat he can investigate at his own pace n liking. Treat him whenever he sniffs or touches d hoop. As an alternative, u can also use a swimming float/tube if ur dog’s small enof.

Other agility equipment can also b introduced 2 ur dog as part of play eg. towels or blankets placed over ur dog 2 get him accustomed with d ‘tunnel’ obstacle. Small cones/obstacles placed in a line 2 resemble d ‘pole weave’. Walking on a slightly raised plank (few inches off d ground) placed on bricks 2 get him used 2 d ‘dog walk’ n heights. Climbing up n down stairs/hills 2 get him used 2 d ‘A-frame’. Hv fun.

Didnt really build any equipmt…most of dem buy n hold together with hands. U got 1 thing rite tho’, more like toys den agility equipment. If show, embarrassing onlylahBlush. Dats why had 2 borrow ur site 2 introduce some ‘real’ home made agility equipment…hope u dont mind. C dat u hv even got an A-frame obstacle, good stuff! Wat hv u used?

How do u hold d base n poles of ur pole weave stable? Do u continue giving commands or hand signals while ur dogs r weaving? Any problems with entry with d 1st pole on d left?

Will try n time Groovy 2 c…he’s actually quite fast depending on mood, also need 2 improve on consistency.

Hi there,

It doesnt matter what material we use for the agility, as long as fun.. LaughLaugh i only hv jumping toys and weave poles for time being.. I tried the A frame @ indoor park. I cant think of a way can store big size obstacle like A frame or Dog Walk.. U hv idea how to make tunnel instead of buying...?

I use PVC as the base for weave poles, since Russell medium size, it's still ok.. May be later I post some photos share with others who into agility... anyone want to share their ideas to build the toys are welcome.. u hv any photos for the equip u build ? may be we can put in one forum share with others.. lets help each other out..Wink

yea.. sometimes they still need me to guide them weave the first pole on their left.. if i combine jumping n weaving together, when they too excited they will miss some poles..Unsure still long way to go.. let's wish agility be one of the common K9 sports in Malaysia..

Re: [shyeow2] Home made agility obstacles [In reply to] Can't Post

So u’ve bn 2 d Seri Kembangan indoor park as well. It still needs a fair bit of work 2 make it happen. Groovy also tried some of d equipment there, hd some fun with d see saw, but it looked as if it was going 2 fall apart pretty soon. D cement flooring was also tough on his paws ven he was going through d jumps so b careful with ur dogs. D A-frame was set at larger dog’s height, so he really had 2 scramble 2 get over it.

Tunnel will b difficult 2 make as u need d waterproof/ rain coat (sturdy nylon) type of material, also difficult 2 keep it standing in place. Better 2 buy n can get 1 at Ikea for RM50. D tunnel is suitable 4 small 2 large size dogs. Hs foldable plastic sticks which is convenient 4 propping up d tunnel n easy storage as well.

Will hv 2 take some pics 1st b4 I can post dem but it’s a certainly a great idea 2 share. Groovy moves pretty fast, so quite difficult 2 get clear shots of him with d obstacles. Timed him on d weave n he’s doing bout 3.5 secs on 12 poles, but inconsistent with entry.

Puppycom commenced its 1st agility training class last Sat n it was basic but great fun…started with some jumps, dog walk n tunnel work. Shld come n hv a look c. Dey hv some really neat obstacles.

Yup, someday it may bcome a real sport here…really depends on d owners 2 make it happen.

Like I said, try leaving d hoop on d floor in ur house so dat Sidney can investigate at his own pace n liking. Treat him whenever he sniffs/touches hoop. Same 4 d poles/cones. Ven he’s comfortable with it, hold hoop with 1 hand n hold treat in fist on d other side of hoop 2 tempt him 2 jump thru. If hoop is low enof, he shld easily skip thru d hoop.Wink

Flyball…now dats a word u dun hear very often in Msia. Dun think dat there are any training centres at d mo for dis sport. As it is, d only dog sports available r agility n schutzhund n these hv only just got started. Think it will take sometime b4 flyball bcomes a real sport here, but v all hv 2 start somewhere.

Glad 2 hear ur interest. Hv u started any training with any equipmt? Only need 4 jumps (similar 2 d agility hurdles n can b made from shoe racks or PVC pipes) placed in a row bout 10 feet apart from each other, n a tennis ball on a table at d other end of d jumps. Hv tried some flyball with my JRT n d tricky part is trying 2 get ur dog 2 jump back over with d ball in his mouth 2 return 2 d starting point. Shocked

The height of d jumps shld b bout d height of ur dog at d withers, just ensure dat ur Maltese is at least 1yo b4 doing any serious training on jumps…but can start with low jumps if he is still young. U can also use a smaller sized ball if d tennis ball is too big.

Wld b great if u can get hold of d actual flyball equipt where d ball pops out of a box ven d dog paws d release lever, n d dog hs 2 catch d ball in mid air, turn around 2 take d jumps on d way back. Looks cool on d Animal Planet TV shows. Cool

Shld hv a go at it. U never know…ur dog may just b d next 50 feet hurdling sensation!

Yup RD, will do. Actually all v need is d flyball thingy from which d ball pops out, but cant b found in Msia at d mo. Can still do without, but need someone 2 stand at d other end of d hurdles n toss d ball in2 d air 4 d dog 2 catch…after getting a paw from d dog, of course. Wink

D ‘Fly guy’ must also b able 2 withstand constant pawing from all K9 types ranging from chihuahuas 2 afghan hounds. Cool
