Watch out for frisbees...n flying dogs Can't Post

Some members hv been asking how 2 get deir dogs 2 catch a frisbee, so here goes…

Where 2 buy? 4 big dogs, normal sized frisbees (10 inches) r available at many supermarkets, toys n pet stores. 4 smaller dogs, u may hv 2 shop around 4 d smaller size disc (6 inches) as ur mutt will give up on d normal size after awhile as its too bulky 4 dem 2 catch n fetch in deir mouths. Small discs r difficult 2 find, hv seen some at d pet shop in Atria costing bout RM10. Normal size discs can b cheaper depending on material.

What 2 buy? 3 materials - plastic, cloth/nylon n nylabone. Plastics r d standard, cheap n with a reasonably steady flight pattern but easily chewable. Cloth/nylon r more durable, floats well with a very steady flight pattern but flight distance is limited n difficult 2 find at stores. Nylabone is d most durable but most expensive n does not float as well, tendency 2 drop faster.

Where 2 play? Any fair sized compound will do. Shld b grassland as ur mutt has 2 run, jump n land. Soft sand at d beach will also do fine.

How 2 start? Can begin once dog is > 6 mths old. However, frisbee shld b thrown low with minimal jumping involved till at least 1 yr old. U’ll need 2 get ur mutt excited with d toy n d chase which means u hv 2 be excited urself n ur dog shld b looking forward 2 lots of praise/treats/tugging sessions as reward for a successful catch. May hv 2 play tug n sacrifice a disc 2 get him interested initially. Show dat u r equally interested in d toy n chase 4 it after it lands.

Practice throws until u r consistent with d flight, height n distance. Nothing puts a dog off more den our uncoordinated limbs throwing discs at impossible angles resulting in discs diving straight in2 drains. Get ur dog 2 face d direction u r throwing at. Start with short throws at head (dog’s) level. As ur mutt becomes more proficient, move onto further distances n greater heights. Bigger dogs may actually prefer this. Dont overdo d height, keep it between waist n head (yours) level.

Dont expect too much, 5-10 attempts per session is pretty good depending on ur dog’s mood. Dont overextend d play session n keep d frisbee while ur dog is still interested. Dont leave it lying around. After awhile, u’ll b able 2 tell when ur dog is in d mood: he’ll b looking with a glint from d corner of his eye, body tensed with a slight lean towards d direction u r throwing at. B patient, dont give up. When ur mutt makes his 1st successful catch, it’s quite a rush! Remember, lots of praise even if it means acting funny in public.

Groovy, ‘I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch d sky…’

hi there,

i've a problem wit frisbee actually.....

pacco seems to be afraid that the frisbee will kena her head....whenever i throw towards her she will avoid the frisbee n wait till it falls onli retrieve it.....

i think she had mistaken this as a fetching game....

Sly Ha ha…mayb she’s smarter den u think. Try n get her 2 stand beside u as u prepare 2 throw d frisbee. After u’ve thrown it, run n chase 4 d frisbee 2 make it seem like a race instead of a retrieving game. Once she gets d frisbee in her mouth, will also need 2 tug n pull (like a chew rope) 2 maintain her enthusiasm 4 d disc.

Yarman RD, groovy's not 2 keen on d frisbees anymore as well n will gv up after 1 or 2 catches. Hv d styrofoam 1 as well.

May hv 2 play tug n sacrifice some discs 2 get dem really interested. Think only working breeds n dose who really like d jump will take 2 dis sport...ha ha Tongue

Crazy Yup, cant understand how d owners in d frisbee competitions overseas train deir dogs (mainly Border Collies again) 2 catch frisbee after frisbee, throughout a 1 -2 minute period. Just 2 catch 1 disc is good enof 4 me.

Mayb our dogs r just smarter n hv figured out dat there r easier things 2 catch eg.ball or treats. Wink
