Hi there, Terry Ryan is from Sequim, Washington. It is about one hour 45 minutes from where I live. My husband is going to a seminar by Bud Houston and Barb Davis this summer. I have seen Barb Davis in action and she is good. She was placed fourth in the US World Team.

Hi Cheng See,

Glad someone from the forum went for this seminar. I am very interested in the breeding for temperment vs type..Care to share a bit on this topic? If it's too complicated or too much work, then don't worry. I can always give you a call later on this matter...(if it's OK with youSmile!)

Re: [arthur] MNAWF Seminar 22/23Mar03 [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Arthur,

She did not really talk much on this subject. She did not cover on phobia either. The areas she covered were mainly on reading a dogs body language and facial expression. She then move on to how CGC in Japan is carried out and WOW it sounds real hard to pass. Apparently in Japan once a dog pass the CGC the dog get a passport that allows it to go out door to public places ie. restaurant etc with the owner.
Here is the list of CGC requirement:-
Here is the CGC test requirement in Japan....
(1) Owner needs to carry plastic bags. ie tested will ask "Do you have a plastic bag?" - to clean up after the dog.
(2) Dog sits when we greet others
(3) Person Pets Dog - dog sits
(4) O Sampo (oh dear can't remeber what is that)
(5) heel
(6) Walk through distractions (real distractions ie. outside in a any selected car park, where there will be children playing, birds etc.)
(7) Down stay * Sit Stay
(8) Praise dog and dog need to settle down once we stop the praising.
(9) Come on recall
(10) Meet another dog
(11) Dog allows owner to wipe its feet (Yeah they need to pass this in Japan)
(12) Dogs sits under chair in restaurant (they really get the owner to restaurant with dog to test)
(13) Left alone in crate (dog need to be quiet)
(14) How dog behaves at a vet (real vetenarian place)

As for the temperament I can't remember if she did talk about it accept that I heard her mention something about it to a fellow participant during a Q&A) But sorry lah I wasn't listening as she was more of discussing it with this person. Unless she did talk about it and I must have snooze off or maybe I did not register in my mind as I was not so intune to breeding thing Blush. . But even if she have talk about it I don't think she said much else I would have heard and registed on my mind at least 10% lah. Sorry Arthur I simply can't recall on this area. Will check with some other participants for you and let you know. Tongue.

Hope I could help more.

Many doggie cheers,

Cheng See

Hi Cheng See,

Gosh..thanks for the info Smile! The CGC test in Japan does look more extensive...especially the vet part.. Most dogs dislike the vet examination table.. So the dog also have a passport? Cool!

So the focus was on reading the doggie's body language and facial expression? Was there any pictures shown to depict actual agression? I mean like the dog is NOT play acting and really about to bite!!

Hi Arthur,

Oh yes Terry did show a number of video clips of dogs expression and body movements. She show it , ask us to identify the various movements ,etc.
hee hee and we get a bone for answering her questions or asking her questions haa haaa.

She also talk about Facts on Punishment in training and how it effects the dog .

She coverd the evolution of wolf to dog.

As for the passport , yeah passport just like ours.
The passport contains the dog and owners photo and details in a booklet (same size as our passport).

Wah if our CGC test is the same as in Japan I think Belle will be prisoner at home for life. haa haaa.

Many doggie cheers,

This is a topic which interests me a lot too... would love to hear if you have anything to share.

If you breed two dogs with good temperament, do all the puppies get this good temperament as well?

We bred Jupey and Juno: Jupey the dad is very temperamental, but Juno is absolutely superb. The puppies are varied... Chester, my mum's pup is so docile, whilst Luckey is more feisty. Jumanji is super friendly with strangers. Springtime was very shy at first then got over it with socialization...

I think upbringing and training makes a difference, but am sure they get their basic temperament gene from somewhere. Would love to learn more.

Hi Cheng See,

Quite a lot of topics were covered in the seminar. So did you guys finally finished off by 3pm? I would love to see what the CGC doggie passport looks like in Japan..Maybe I'll search the net on this..

BTW, I still remember the touching video on the women prisoners that train service dogs shown over the last MNAWF seminar last year. If we can get this video, it'll be great to share this to our forum members here as well.. I'll bring the tissuesSmile! Now who has a projector TV at home? Hmnn...

Thks for sharing Cheng See...

Hi Jennifer,
This topic on temperment was brought up in an earlier thread with LeoPui. I have also read from the internet that the bitch plays an important role in passing on the temperment trait..contributing about 70% of the temperment characteristic. How this figure came about was not verified. I agree with you that early socialisation does play a vital role in bring out the best temperment in the dog.
