'Msians love eating out...n so do their dogs' Can't Post

Hv been 2 a number of pubs, cafes, restaurants n coffee shps round PJ, B’gsar, Sri H’mas, BB areas i gf n JRT n 2date v hv been welcomed at all outlets except 4 a ‘soulless’ corner cafe in H’mas. Hv bumped into 5 other mutts during our visits n will b glad 2 c more dogs adapting 2 d al fresco culture. Some thots 2 help smuggle ur dog into cafes:

1. Always pick cafes i outside seating, al fresco style.

2. Try not 2 pick overly crowded cafes, lesser occupied ones r more accommodating.

3. Stick 2 Chinese, Japanese, Gwailo, Indian (not mamak) hangouts - steer away from Muslim frequented joints unless dey appear 2 hv a liberal attitude.

4. Always ask 4 permission 1st if u r bringing ur mutt 2 new cafes. B friendly n courteous. If possible, get d females (GF, mom, aunt…not d dog) 2 do d asking as cafe owners tend 2 hv a soft spot 4 dem. Also, dey r generally perceived 2 hv small dogs, which brings us 2 d nxt point.

5. With small dogs, u hv an advantage as dey r perceived 2 b quieter, manageable n more likely 2 go unnoticed. With large dogs, u hv ur work cut out n will really need 2 convince mgmt dat ur Pit Bull is actually a GR/Lab in disguise.

6. Always b presentable n well groomed. Ur mutt must b spotless n preferably i an agreeable smell.

7. Dog must b calm n trained not 2 bark/growl at all times whilst at cafe.

8. Always place ur mutt on leash n on d floor, dont take up chair/table space - it only takes 1 customer 2 complain about d fur on her backside…

9. Treat other patrons with respect, dont make a fuss about ur dog n d patrons will do d same. Some will not even notice after awhile n treat ur dog as a regular.

10. D customer is always right - move 2 a more secluded table/another cafe, if necessary. It only takes 1 customer 2 make a fuss…

11. Small treats n drinks r ok but dont feed ur dog his meal.

12. Dog must b toilet trained, preferably 2 do it on grass. Always b on alert 4 doggy business. Better still, ensure ur mutt has done it b4hand. Otherwise, u hv 2 make periodic visits 2 d nearby grassland. U will still need 2 do d same if u stay 4 longer periods. If so, find an area away n out of sight from eateries n patrons. Remember poo bag.

13. Always leave d place as u found it, clean/tidy. Dont leave puddles/paw prints. B friendly 2 staff n tip if deserving. Leave a good impression n ur dog will b more than welcome nxt time around.

This has allowed us 2 include Groovy in most of our makan-minum sessions n it’s therapeutic fun. Hope it works for d adventurous amongst u.

Groovy, 'I love happy hours'

u laid out the rules nicely!

yep i have been to a number of place with my GR. so a big dog also can, not only a small dog.

try finnegans hartamas, they actually will serve ur dog sausages (RM12) and a bowl of water. no biggie.

Hi!

U got these 2 points right on.....

4. Always ask 4 permission 1st if u r bringing ur mutt 2 new cafes

Comments : I have noticed before people bringing dogs without asking and expect no comments from patrons & the restaurant owners and when they were told to leave or move to another table, they make noise, give faces and complain.

8. Always place ur mutt on leash n on d floor, dont take up chair/table space - it only takes 1 customer 2 complain about d fur on her backside…

comments : Seen many who put the dog on chair, and the furkid misbehave where he/she try to sniff on the nice aroma of food on the table, trying their licking luck on plates & cups, put the paws on the table trying to get the food or simply just put the head on the table resting.

Thanks for posting this up, this wud give furkid lovers more clues on what to do and how to approach the restaurant owners when going out.

cheers,

In places with more expats they tend to be more understanding to our needs to bring our furkid out with us. So places like bangsar, hartamas tends to be more open and friendly to people like us. Smile Glad that ur GR also found a nice place to hang out with ! Frown

actually not only expat places. i have brought my GR to nyonya restaurant, chinese mixed area. also no problem. finnegans bukit bintang (near bus stop) there is a lot of malay there.

i guess it boils down if ur dog want to co-operate with you.

somehow i felt that more tolerance from expats / chinese owners. as for cooperative of dog... also depends lor. Some restaurant no matter how big/small or cooperative ur dog is... u only need 1 datin to make some noise n that's it.

As for malay.... i wud not say all of em is against dog. Some even owns them, train them and etc....

I have personally taken my dogs to mamak. on my lap and they are ok with it as long as the dog is 'away' from them and does not dirty their table n utesils especially.

GR definitely no problem at cafes... what more if it’s ever smiling like yours (per photo). Great 2 know dat some places have even started serving doggy meals & drinks…lucky u.

4 me with a JRT, if he can stay still & not run rings around d tables & waiters, damn good already. Also not d greedy type, so he’s ok with or without food but will pop his head above d table once awhile 2 keh poh.

Actually we are quite lucky…altho we complain a fair bit, Msians r generally quite liberal/ flexible when it comes 2 these sort of things. Don’t forget dat it’s d cafe owners’ prerogative 2 turn away ur dog since it’s against health regulations (dis applies in all countries). In d end, all of dem just wanna do business so provided dey do not hv any massive hangover over dogs…more likely than not, dey’ll welcome ur mutt.

Where do Mocha, Summer n Lightning normally hangout?

Some patrons may stare but most of dem r just pleasantly surprised at seeing a dog relaxing with d owner. If u dog behaves well enof, d comments will bcome more positive eg, ‘That’s a wonderful little rascal…What a well behaved fella…Eeeee dog…so cute…woof, woof…meow, meow’??!?

It’s just a matter of socializing our dogs 2 b comfortable with all situations n locations n getting d customers 2 c dat dogs can hv a decent meal with their owners n its not such a big deal after all.

Off course, u get d ones who r really surprised n jump straight up almost hitting d fan, as tho dey hv seen a 8 ft grizzly bear as opposed to a 15 inch JRT. Don’t be put off by d stares, need 2 b thick skinned a bit here n mayb more selective in ur choice of cafes.

U hv a GR/lab (from photo)? As I said, these genial breeds shld fit right in at cafes, no problem. Yah, cant wait 4 a dog friendly café or park to open. Went 2 d new one at Sth City Plaza, Sri Kembangan…bit disappointing as dey weren’t properly set up, ½ masak. Hardly any mutts turned up. Still, at least dey had some fenced up area n obstacles 4 dogs 2 play.

D ‘dog park’ is on d car park of Sth City Plaza but b4 u get all excited & drool over it, like I’ve said it’s ½ masak ie. only a covered, fenced up, cemented car park area with a few obstacles. Altho d concept is greatWink, d execution leaves a lot 2 b desiredCrazy. Certainly need lots of improvement eg. greenery, plants, more obstacles n a cafe, 2 justify d entrance fees. At d moment, only recommended 4 those who cant find any enclosed area 2 walk n play with their dogs off leash.

V only met 1 dog when v were there, a Basset Hound ‘Gucci’, n Groovy had a great time enticing d hound 2 play chase.

Perhaps u shld start slowly…beginning with visits 2 Chinese coffee shops/ stalls, den cafes, moving on2 restaurants n graduating at pubs. If u hv a Silky (per photo), den shld be no worries as really small size. Just hv 2 ensure ur dog remains quiet n on d floor whilst at cafe. As some Silkies (like JRTs) can b quite lively, also need 2 train dem so dat dey r not easily alarmed n r comfortable with noise, movement n distractions.

Try it, mayb a bit troublesome at 1st but there’s no other feeling like sipping coffee n stroking your dog’s fav spot at d same time. If u hv ever seen a dog laying snugly just beneath his owner’s outstretched legs at a Coffee Bean outlet, both indulging in some people-watching…u’ll know what I mean.

After reading the rules that you (Groovemaster) have laid out, I suddenly remembered seeing an elderly lady who was carrying her dog (a terrier) like a baby at Ikano Power Centre last weekend. Not only that, she waltzed right into Bread Story and was walking round and round looking for what cake/bun to pick and buy...no offence...I am a dog lover myself but I thought that was pretty rude of her to waltzed into the the shop with her dog..as you know, all the cakes / buns are not covered and the furkid's fur could easily land on the food ...she was later asked (politely) to leave the shop.

Yup, dont push ur luck. Indoors n air conditioned places r a definite no,no for dogs unless u happen 2 know d owner well enof n hv been invited inside or d place specifically allows dogs eg. Pet Safari at Ikano. Otherwise, stick 2 outdoor al fresco seating… it’s d in thing 2 do anyway.

I don't share your view. I think that she should be allowed to bring in her dog as long as there is no direct contact between the dog/owner and the food. And as long as she keeps a distance between her/her dog and the food.

I also think you are just being overly obsessive about hygiene. If you start nitpicking about everything in life, then what's the point of living? It's like saying you shouldn't drive a car because there are accidents on the road.

And can you guarantee that the buns sitting in the shop will not attract air-borne virus/bacteria from other sources that are floating around? Or would you check the health status of each food handler in that shop before deciding it is safe to buy their food?

Think u hv 2 b a little bit more open minded n look at it from d café owner’s point of view. It’s not dat he doesn't wan 2 serve u n ur dog, its just against health regulations n all eateries r subject 2 dis ie. no pets allowed on premises. If caught, he mayb subject 2 a fine or if someone complaints 2 d authorities, he mayb asked 2 close shop. So it’s d café owner’s prerogative 2 ask u n ur mutt 2 leave. Dont get upset…just look 4 another café which is more accommodating.

Hey, v r in Msia n there r lots of cafes round every corner anyway…n if in doubt, ask.
