hi weew

i notice that beagles is a very good companion. if they do not see anyone, they will start making noise lah, its like they hate to be lonely. normally what i do is that, just play with my beagle for few mins, the longer the better, then only put him back in the crate, and there he goes, keep quiet, tired after playing....

for you, maybe before you go to work, just play with her, bring her for walk. and after you come back for walk, play with her, and bring her for walk. if you think that you are tired, and cannot bring her for a walk, playing with her is a good solution. buy a toy (ball can also) and just throw some where in your apartment, then your beagle will go chasing after the ball. how bout if you just let your beagle roam the apartment and don't keep her in the laundry room, but if you are afraid of the beagle devastating your apartment, then maybe you can put in a room where can see outside...

hope this helps..

hope this helps...

Re: [MisterStan] HELP! Puppy beagle want my presence ONLY! [In reply to] Can't Post

well well.....another bad bad example of a new owner getting a puppy without doing any homework at all beforehand....u obviously are very ignorant about how to rear a puppythe correct way......well all i can say is u have to learn all from scratch as a beginner......and......owning a puppy and taking care of the puppy isnt like just playing with a toy u fancy......it has to come with lots of responsibilities and patience and knowledge as well......i think u should really buck up with some knowledge from books asap or talk to someone with a pet dog at home or even better someone at a pet shop or even a breeder......well trust me u are going to embark on a journey of brand new knowledge learning.....well it can be more challenging than whatever career u are busy on right now.....

Okay back to business.....ur small puppy is making noise cos he(i assume) is at a new environment and he is afraid of the new surroundings.......he will need ur company as long as possible within the 1st 3 days......u need to spend lots of time with him and calm him down by touching him on his body and stomach and get really close with him....try to touch his legs and tummy.....this will calm him down and form a bond between the two of you......try to hold him as much as possible. U need to feed him regularly and punctually on time every meal. Before u even step out of your apartment to go out to work....u must make sure that u have done this a several times....1st u must try to fix a space for him to move around when u r not at home......if u are having a beagle.....i suggest u put him somewhere of less destruction he can do.....stay away from places with lots of things and objects. Best u can fence up ur balcony and put him there with his cage(always give a bigger cage)......make sure u pick a spot and toilet train him there 1st......b4 u actually leave the apartment......u need to practise this.......just leave that place where he is now and go somewhere he cant see you......he will make noise and then u leave him there making noise 4 a while....say 10 mins......then u go back.....pet him and touch him....this is to make him understand that u are not going away for long.....after this.....repeat the step and increase the time.....from 10 mins...slowly 15...20...30 mins....and go back everytime and play with him for a while......ok.....when it's time u r going out.....just leave the door n come back in 3 mins if he makes noise and shout NO NO at him.......when he quiets down then praise him and pet him....try to leave the door this time for longer and repeat the step if he make noise until he understands that u dont want him to make noise....reward him with treats if he is quiet and praise him Good boy.......

This is basically what u can do if u want to train ur pampered pup to keep quiet while u r away......anyway.....this is a very 'dead' method actually.....what i personally did was to just ignore the puppy.....dont ever be soft hearted and keep going and sayang him and keep going and coming back round n round....just shout at him when he is noisy and raise ur voice......you can even hit his back softly or hold him up and say Quiet in a stern way...well....which method....u choose urself depending on ur character.....mostly girls will choose that method above i guess.......

Re: [ohmybeagle] HELP! Puppy beagle want my presence ONLY! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks For all the advice, I am wondering why the puppy 'suppose' to like to chew thing/angthing, how come I give ball, toy, smelly toy. she just don't want to chew?

Another thing, I did do reserch about this breed, and buy book specially for beagle 1 months ago before I get her. I am very sure about how active they are, and the character of the puppy beagle, BUT just do not know she can't keep alone even with toy, even let her run FREELY at my apartment!

I thought she need space, so, seem she NOT LIKE TO CHEW, so I let her run around my apartment, when I work( at home) she just stay beside me and chewing 'nilon' material as a entertaiment for her self, AND ONCE I got to toilet, she start howl....... ei...mew.....sound like that. If i try to keep long the toilet, it BARK!
I understand she would like to tell me that' hey, i am here, let me in also....."

The thing is, I am quite afraid of leaving my house, not beacuse of she will destroy anything(nothing can be destroy, cos I have purposely put anything chewable above-Including wire!) is just I afraid my kiran complaint and force me to give away the dog.

I did train the puppy to quite in the crate by reward her when she is diam for 1 minutes, then 1.30min then 2min....and so on, when bark, I come in straight CANE leg!

SO, if she will be howling for a week, or a month, I will be howling also:(...

AH HAH! Will it solve this problem by GETTING TWO BEAGLES? This can let them play with each other and it is very HELPFUL to make them howl less, infact not howl at all!!! Any suggestion on the expenses or money I need to spend?

Re: [weew] HELP! Puppy beagle want my presence ONLY! [In reply to] Can't Post

Sometimes, I read threads like this and feel sad. Sad because many people expect dogs Not to be dogs !

The right dog with the right environment can be a good pet but unfortunately expecting the dog to be in an environment that it dislikes can be expecting too much besides being unfair on the dog.

Hounds need space to run, needs company to play with, needs the open spaces of fields ! Keeping it cooped up like a hen will not help at all.

Keeping a hound in an apartment is a disaster waiting to happen. Hounds will howl as is it's nature and cause a nuisance to your neighbours. Hounds will suddenly lose control and go on a wild uncontrolled spree, chewing, clawing, jumping on everything in an apartment.

There are dog with a less "wild" nature, spitz, shih tzu, poms, pekinese etc. which you might have fared better with. There are many species specially bred for situations like yours, please look into getting suitable.

Training is a temporary thing, it'll do tricks out of fear, hunger, greediness but not because it loves to do what you ask ! IMHO One day even the best trained dogs will rebel !

Look at it this way, if you are an outdoor type person, would being locked up in a small apartment for months be enjoyable ? or vice versa ?

Yes, getting another beagle would help for a while but you are inviting the disaster x 2 !!!!!!!

I have 2 beagles and getting more ! Their Lock-up environment is more than 1000 sq.ft and are let out to run in an area more than 3000sq.ft. several times daily and yet they howl and bark whenever they feel like it !

My best wishes for you beagle.

Re: [tuckfook] HELP! Puppy beagle want my presence ONLY! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yeah that's exactly the point.....but i believe there are just so many owners out there that dont really care about the benefit for their dogs itself. They are too into getting that particular dog as a pet and companion and they would just ignore the importance of understanding the nature of the breed. Some think they can get over with the problem as time goes by......yes.....one might succeed but that is still risky and requires alot of patience and endurance.......well i guess for Weew......there is still something can be done.....like below.....

Well honestly i think Weew will not give up the beagle as he is so cute and adorable.....and getting another beagle in the apartment is a bad bad idea.......they will fight from one corner to another like mine do.....thus ruining your household stuff.....and even with one beagle....i seriously think that u cant keep him roaming free.......lots of damage can be done.....they can jump to high places when they are bigger......practically tearing everything that interests them......and Beagles shed alot of fur from time to time eventhough u dont see it......it's really a big issue with hygiene not to mention if u are asthmatic......

well....the only approach to this is.......train ur beagle to be super obedient......be ready to turn urself into a stern master and tolerate no nuisances.......get a stick or something so make sure that he fears it and whenever he does something wrong....just punish with discipline and u must try until he understands that certain things cant be done to avoid punishment.....i suggest Weew to bring ur beagle to obedience training now n hopefully it helps.....proper socialisation could improve the dog's temperament.......and eventhough u stay in an apartment......u have no excuse of restricting his freedom......bring him out for a walk when u come back from work......at least 15 mins.....that wont kill u but it can kill his boredom and use some of his ample energy....when u are not at home....make sure that u give him toys and bones to chew at.....try to encourahe him to chew by offering it to her n not just throwing at her...spend some time teaching her how to play that toy and how to chew that bone......when u have time....try to bring her to some dog's gathering organized by puppy.com or MKA......socialising is the key to a controllable dog.....

well Weew....good luck there.....if u have tried all the above and none works.....dont give up yet....wait till ur beagle is one year old......he cant be naughty forever.....he will settle down as he approaches adulthood....but dont forget training has to start right away....that's now.......otherwise it's too late....And about her crying sound.....try just to ignore her and dont pamper her so much.....when she knows that she cant get ur attention by crying....then she will settle down and rest alone.....she will continue to cry for ur attention if she knows u r going to get to her.......raising a puppy is just like raising a baby......too much pampering will spoil him......i do scold my pup aloud when she cries and then she would know that her effort of crying is futile then she gives up and rest down........u need to make him fear u a little at least !!

Re: [weew] HELP! Puppy beagle want my presence ONLY! [In reply to] Can't Post

hello weew,

well how is your beagle now, as i remember you called me on the phone in the morning, (i was still sleeping by the way) hehe nemind, well guys! you all are too harsh on this new puppy owner here la...everybody has mistakes and he is trying to seek help from us, so dun penalize him saying he did not do his homework about the breed, ohh to the point, all the things ohmybeagle and tuck fook said is definitely true and you should try all the advice they gave to you. i have something i want to add. well you can try playing him some music or a FM radio if u have softly and aloud when u go to work. this will make him think that there is still somebody in the house but this is just a temporary idea for you to make him stop howling when u go to work. the most important thingy now is to control your dog, be a rightful master of your beagle. have you tried the NO command i told you to do. its works great for me .....every doggie has its favorite toy... go get one that he likes.. usually a ball will do the trick. another rather cruel way is to buy a muzzle as a punishment. i've got another friend who owns a beagle as well, he lived in an apartment as well so he bought a muzzle and whenever his doggie howls and barks, he will say no and then put the muzzle on the dog. for like 3 mins. then after that take it off then if he barks again, he puts it on again.. now he has learned that barking or howling for no reason will not get him out of the cage. but make sure u set a time to set him free so that he knows when is the time he could come out and when he is suppose to be in the cage...feed him in the cage and try to encourage him to sleep in his cage...this is because if he knows that u are going to be locking him up in the cage for the whole day he wil hate the cage and not go in when asked. so try to make him think that his cage is his bed and it is fun to go in. throw a ball or something he likes into the cage and make him fetch for you. this will let him know that not everytuime he goes into the cage he will get locked up.

regards

Christopher
