Yes ... the dog can be trained not to bark so much ... But it is also important to realise that barking is natural to a dog, just as speaking is natural to a human being ... and that some breeds tend to bark more. Therefore training should be geared towards reducing barking or controlling the barking and not to prevent it altogether ... When a dog barks ... and the owner starts to scold & shout ... to the dog, the owner is just joining in the barking ... and then how to stop the dog from barking? ... Therefore, if a dog owner wishes to reduce barking ... it is important to understand the various training methods ... and to apply those methods consistently and patiently ... (a) Active soccialisation, acclimatisation and sometimes reconditioning is useful ... The more a dog is exposed to new and varied conditions and environments ... the less a dog will tend to bark. For example: If the dog is taught that postmen are friendly then the dog will stop barking at the postman. Use search function and check out the threads under the words ... "socialisation" and "reconditioning". (b) Training specifically to reduce barking: Using distraction, praise & reward techniques (as oppossed to punishment methods) ... This requires the owner to train the dog how to obey basic commands like Sit & Stay ... and NO or STOP ... When such training is carried out effectively - it becomes possible to use such commands to reduce the incidents of barking ... And as training progresses ... it is even possible using the same techniques to teach Sit & Stay to teach a dog to stop barking on command. For example: When a dog starts to bark ... instead of shouting, screaming or scolding the dog ... command the dog to sit & stay - then praise & treat ... And in that way, the owner will be using basic training to teach a dog to stop barking ... It is often the case, a dog who barks incessantly is also usually a dog that has not been trained properly or sufficiently. Use search function and check out the threads under the words ... "basic training". Please realise that there is no short cut to training a dog ... and I guess it starts here ... Suggest your friend gets a good dog training book, start reading and training the proper way ... Cheers
