Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Tuckfook

i don't have any dogs for hunting wild boars, but my dad and his friends do have some non-purebreds that they use for such hunting.

According to my dad, some dogs either "have it" or not, and as such i don't it is necessary that a purebred will be better.

They go on weekly hunts, and these dogs just love it. The moment they see the jeeps coming up, and with the grouip of hunters, they very willingly jump into the jeep and ready to go!

Hi

you can consider Great Dane. GD were originally bred for hunting wild boars. It has the size, strength, and speed to bring down a boar which could be double its size if not equal.

it would be great if I have the chance to go for hunting with my 3 giants. Where do u hunt the boars??

Have a Great Day.

Re: [MisterStan,ALL] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

wild boars can be as big as a bear, and its tusks are the killing weapon. It can cause serious injuries to hunting dogs. Thus, it requires a hunting dog which has the capability to bring the boar down.

I haven't seen/read about any hunter used beagles to hunt boar lor... yes for hare or fox huntingSmile

I think this is not the proper thread for hunting discussionPirate why not we start one at working group???

Have a Great Day.

Re: [tuckfook] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi All

Hey, you people are really amusing !

The Malaysian Wild boar full grown is about 100kgs. Bigger than a full grown St. Bernard. Black to Dark grey in colour and probably runs faster than most dogs. It inhabits dense jungle undergrowth and uses tracks which it runs through with ease. These track are like low tunnels and with it's pointed snout and low head/snout profile, literally tunnels through the undergrowth. The males have 2 " Fangs " which protrude from the lower jaw and these are used very effectively as weapons. The fangs are sharpened by 2 teeth which rubs against the Fangs every time it closes it's mouth. The females can only bite but their jaws are powerful enough to pulverise oil palm seeds or bite through a dog's thigh bone easily.

Great Danes and similar dogs are only good in open country which of course the Wild boar avoids.

I have used pitt bulls and the dogs are too aggressive which ends up with a dead pitt bull. Cowards are the survivors. Big dogs are unable to manouvre in dense undergrowth. Most boar hunting dogs are just the roadside mongrel, trained to hunt.

The Beagle cross with Jack Russell terrier is what I'm after. Good pack instinct, good sense of smell and plenty of barking on the chase. A pack can bring a big boar down but a Big dog will not be able to move well in our jungles.

My hunting is usually around the estates out of Kulim to Baling. Wild boar meat keeps my dogs healthy and happy whilst I also enjoy some of the lower cholesterol meat.

So people, if your JRT and Beagle did something naughty, sell the offsprings to me !

I actually posted here accidentally, yes by all means start a new thread.

hi

check out this site: www.boardogs.com

there are many mixed breeds used to hunter wild boars. I agree with you that M'sia jungle is different compares to western countries. Thus smaller size dogs are more appropriate for hunting.

Tell us about your hunting experience though...

 Hai.........

my granfather also use mongle to hunt the wild boars Tongue Tongue Tongue............... mongle is more "tahan lasak" and some time they return with 2 or 3 wild boars, the result is not bad.

Hi,

We use mongrels at the moment, we have over 20 dogs and use about 10 every hunt. Somehow I think specialist breeds may do better.

Beagles, Foxhounds etc. have been bred for years to do their jobs well and successfully so perhaps they'll work here too as they have definitely better noses than our mongrels and not to forget that howling of theirs that is so captivating in itself.

i think Beagles or Foxhounds is not suitable for hunting wild boars because of their saiz.......... maybe some big and gaint saiz dog can help you in hunting........ as we all know wild boars is not small, some can up to 100kg???? (just like you say). Pirate Pirate Pirate

Beagles more suitable do their duty in hunting wild rabbit or snake.

Re: [liangann83] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Size, that's exactly what I thought so I crossed a Pitbull with a Bull terrier for a med sized fighter. Well out of 6 we had, 5 died because they were too ferocious and too BIG to manouvre in the thick grass, vines and ferns that wildboars like to hide !

90% of the smaller mongrels survive and most are too chicken to attack a wild boar except bark and chase after but run when attacked.

In Malaysia, we don't need the dogs to catch and hold the boars, just find and chase them out and the hunters will do the rest.

So, my conclusion would be a dog that will not attack a bigger animal, barks a lot and has good pack instincts with a good nose for find the prey.

In fact someone had a spitz once and it was good ! It would chase the pig, make lots of noise and never attack or get too near. Unfortunately the spitz does not have stamina and the white color would be prime target for the waiting wild boar.

you would need tracking dogs like plott hounds or coonhounds to locate the animal, then you would need an american bulldog or larger breed dog to take the wild pig down.

Hi,

I'm gonna cross Beagles with local dogs to get a cowardly but noisy breed, which hopefully will have a nose to locate the boars.

Once flushed out, there is no need for dogs to bring the boar down, the shotgun takes care fo that.

Hi,

Yes, I hunt every week.

Collies are smart with a herding instinct but are not usually pack dogs. They are also fairly large for our jungles.

The huskies are strong runners, pack dogs with good hunting instincts BUT have long fur which is unsuitable for our weather. they are also quite large.

Large dogs are not suitable as our jungles tend to be thick with vines that catch dogs. Wild boars run in tunnels which suits dogs that are about 17" at the shoulder. Smaller dogs tend to be more agile which will help them avoid an attack by wild boars.

Thanks for the idea, all ideas are welcome.

Re: [glng675] Dogs for hunting wild boars [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi, long time since I last posted, still lurking though Blush

Last month, I lost my APB x Boxer 3rd. generation. "Velu" as the beaters called him, had too much of a APB trait and over a year of chasing boars had aquired at least 50 slashes all over. Well, the last one did him in. He was slashed in the stomach region and it literally spilled some of his intestines out. The Indian Vet in Kulim stitched him up but I think there was further internal injury as he had bloody stools and the wound broke open after about a week. Nothing we could do as it was festering internally inspite of large doses of antibiotics.

Velu's sister is the last of the generation and we are keeping her for further breeding with the mongrels, So, she's retired.

The Last of the crosses which I have in my house(pic. I sent) is doing well. Quite aggressive for a puppy and probably not to be used for hunting but a guard dog.

As for Beagles, they were bred for hunting, chasing down small animals. Less famous than their bigger brother the Fox hound. Beagels are good with their noses and their bark. Not for fighting boars, which is good as I do not want to see dogs killed. ot managed to cross any of them yet.

The better terriers for hunting are the Fox Terriers, which I am looking for. Plenty of noise when on the chase and coward enough to run away when attacked. That was not what Velu and his sister would do in facing a boar, irrespective of size of the boar. It was always straight into attack mode.

nice to hear from you.

tuckfook

very interesting thread to discuss abt hunting. may i know u hunt for interest or..

well noticed that chihuahua is the type which will bark non stop & give a chase to strangers but will be coward enough to run away if the stranger give chase.

well i understand they might be very small but as u said u dont need to hunt the boar down so will this be possible? or maybe u can use a male chihuahua to mate with another potential female which have the gene that chihuahua lack for hunting?

just a thought, hope u can give me some feedback, thanks. & dont laugh at me lah.

Yang

Hi,

I don't know if anyone has tried Chihuahua for hunting, but I'd guess they are too small and get swallowed up in our jungles. Many mid sized animals in our jungles that would find the CHH a tasty morsel.

We need low pitched barks that carry further than high pitched which is what the smaller breeds do.

The CHH is not a pack dog, as hunting dogs need to work together to get the boar, the CHH might probably be unsuitable in this aspect too.

Maybe you can cross wiotha large terrier, eg., Fox terrier and get a hunting breed from that cross. You'll have to study the offsprings to see if they have the hunting instincts. It's a long process which is why we try to keep to established hunting breeds.

Hi,

We hunt out of Sg. Kob which is about 20 kms from Kulim which is about 50kms from Penang. Most of the others go about 3 times a week, I go only on sunday.

Hunting is not for those who are unfirmiliar with the Malaysian outdoors. Leeches, mosquitoes, hot sun, wet mud, an occassional snake etc.etc. If you like all that, then please do join us for a trip. Morning start at about 8am and finish in the evening when it starts to get dark or earlier if the hunt has been good or dog has been injured.

Best if you ride a cub bike, especially Honda ex5. and like slippery muddy roads. Saves a bit of walking and adds to the fun. I ride a scrambler.
